La diaspora basque est une réalité culturelle plurielle, dont l’histoire remonte à la conquête espagnole. Juan Sebastián Elkano, né à Getaria en 1476, fut le premier marin à faire le tour du monde, entre 1519 et 1522. En hommage à son expédition, l'empereur Charles Quint lui décerna des armoiries représentant un globe portant comme inscription ‘Primus circumdedisti mihi’ (Tu a été le premier à faire le tour pour moi). L’émigration basque qui s’ensuivit façonna en partie des pays comme le Chili et l’Argentine.
