Genealogy's Star: A Conversation About Genealogy Programs

Genealogy's Star: A Conversation About Genealogy Programs | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it

Interesting opposing viewpoints overheard in a conversation.

The author concludes: "There seems to be no way to convincingly demonstrate that keep records on a computer is inherently superior to using a paper based system. Both can be inaccurate and both can be accurate. Both can be sourced properly or both can ignore sources. It is only when you look to modern values of time savings and are convinced that computerized records are more convenient, can you make a good case for computerization. I say let well enough alone. I you want to work with paper records, you should be allowed to do so without feeling inferior in any way. On the other hand, just because you use a computer does not validate your genealogy any more than the genealogy of those who do all their work by hand."

Technology Tamers: Pin4Ever...Pinterest Backup | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it
The launch of Pin4Ever, which is a backup service for Pinterest. You create an account, run a backup, and you're done. Click here if you're interested in trying this free trial. If you like the free trail, the service is moderately priced ($19.99 per year).

If you're in business and want to have a backup of your pins, $19.99 is a drop in the bucket. If you're a casual pinner, I can't see where you'd be all that interested. You can always create a PDF of your boards but that requires more than the one-clickPin4Ever solution.

Kathy Szczesny's insight:

A first of its kind!  BridgeAnne d’Avignon made nationwide headlines because she was the first genealogist in the world to discover that the U.S. Presidents are related to one another through a common ancestor.

WeAreAllRelated.com specializes in charts of presidential ancestors and lineages. "Our database is the result of more than 60-years of research and contains ~1-million names connecting families throughout many generations."

I wonder what technology she used to have created this, let alone to have made all the connections.

7 Genealogy - Technology Links

7 Genealogy - Technology Links | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it
Here are this week's 7 Gen-Tech Links to help you out with your research efforts. Why just 7? Because as a researcher, you'd like to actually do some research, right? [Novel idea, eh?]

Author of 4yourfamilystory.com has decided to bring you just 7 links to tech tools once a week [plus the 3 bonus Gen-Tech links in the Genea-Tech Newsletter]. By cutting the links down, you'll be getting a more meaningful and curated list [And might I add that this is a hand-curated list just for family history researchers?] of some really helpful tools that you can review, select, and put to use over the weekend or whenever the next scheduled research time that you have is.

Because success in researching is not really about finding tech tools. Trust me, there's lots of them. It's about finding the best ones for you and your research style. And then putting them to good use to find those ancestors and their stories.

1000memories Launches “Shoebox” App For iPhone, Puts A Scanner In Your Pocket

1000memories Launches “Shoebox” App For iPhone, Puts A Scanner In Your Pocket | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it
Memory-Sharing Platform Launches First Mobile Tool For Sharing Photo Collections From The Past SAN FRANCISCO, October 27, 2011 — Memory-sharing platform 1000memories.com today announced the launch of the Shoebox scanning app for iPhone, the first...

“Large photo collections from our past have never been digitized or shared because it’s been too difficult and time-consuming. With the introduction of the Shoebox app, we’re putting multiple hand-held scanners in households and organizations, for free,” says 1000memories co-founder Rudy Adler. “We've created a tool that allows people to upload and share old photos in a fraction of the time needed for traditional photo scanning, which will dramatically change the rate at which these collections are being shared.”

Shoebox can auto-detect the edges of a photo and then quickly crop and straighten accordingly. Users can then add information typically written on the back of old photos - such as dates, names, and locations - before uploading to the 1000memories.com, where it can be organized, shared and discovered by friends and family.

It's Time to Change the Game

It's Time to Change the Game | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it

For Your Family Story wrote an interesting post surrounding the results of the 1000memories.com recent survey on family history.

"Over the weekend [Oct 15-16, 2011] 1000memories.com shared the results of their recent survey on family history. The survey found that more people than ever are interested in learning about their family history

but, Caroline makes the point that the genealogy world needs to meet people where they are, assess what those people need, and provide a platform that is inviting and relevant to them. It can’t afford not to do it.

Technology can allow younger groups to participate like never before. Just imagine a program where younger people were unleashed in a retirement home, and they captured family stories on Smartphones? How about if they were unleashed in an old forgotten cemetery and with their Smartphones, they captured and uploaded all the photos of and information from the tombstones to an online site?

Do we really want our descendants sitting around wondering who we were and wondering why we didn’t capture what we could with the technology we had?"

Finding the genealogy community on Google+

Finding the genealogy community on Google+ | Genealogy Technology | Scoop.it

Do we really need one more place to see genealogists? Aren’t blogs, Facebook and Twitter enough? Apparently not. If you want to get started in joining the Google+ genealogical community, simply create a Circle for that type of contact. There is a blank Circle on the Circle list and all you have to do is drag and drop someone from your list of contacts into the blank Circle and give the Circle a name.

One interesting and sometimes useful function of Google+is the ability to conduct “Hangouts” where up to 10 people can participate in an online video chat at the same time. Mobile Hangouts currently supports Android 2.3+ devices with front-facing cameras. The Hangout function is developing rapidly into a way to create instant webcasts and, in the future, share documents, videos, and computer screens with the others on Google+.
