Amid crop failures and crippling debt, thousands seek a living as sex workers in Hyderabad
Sandra Isabel Novo Canto's insight:

“There are over 25,000 (female) sex workers in the city today - higher than any other city in India,” says Jayamma Thomas, who runs Chaitanya Mahila Mandali (CMM), an organisation that provides counselling and legal support to sex workers. “Of them, 60 percent are women who migrated from villages and were forced to enter the sex trade as they had no other earning alternative.”

Helps answer HEI

Bryce Rowell's curator insight, May 7, 2014 5:34 PM

I choose this article because of natural disasters within these agriculturally dependent countries, people are forced out of there homes and lives. As a result of the environment women sometimes have to be apart of the notorious sex trades and the business of prostitution, where many forms of violence and wrongdoing occur.

Daniel Nunez's curator insight, May 8, 2014 12:52 PM

In many countries the amount of women that suffer during natural disasters is huge. They suffer because since they rely on farming and the disaster destroys the crop they are forced into prostitution and slavery related jobs to keep the family surviving. If they don't then they are beaten for not producing good offspring to take care of the family. And they are sometimes killed because the husbands think that  they are useless and need to find new wives.

Increasing violence faced by sex workers in London during recession

Via heather dawson
Sandra Isabel Novo Canto's insight:

Some comments on the report are needed at this point:

Quote (p.12): "Evidence suggests that a minority of sex workers in London are trafficked (though the exact percentage is not known)*. Research suggests that there is a great variety of migration and work trajectories within theUKsex industry, meaning that the degree of exploitation or coercion that a sex worker experiences varies greatly. The Project Acumen report, which sought to understand the scale and nature of trafficking inEnglandandWales, found that of an estimated 30,000 women involved in prostitution, 17,000 were migrants. Of these migrant sex workers, 2,600 were identified as trafficked. A further 9,600 were identified as vulnerable e.g. financially. The remaining 5,500 did not meet the ‘trafficked’ or ‘vulnerable’ thresholds. The report found that in London 96.4% of sex workers were migrants"

I am wondering to what extent the definition of trafficking stated in the Palermo Protocol is clearly understood, since it includes, apart from the use of force or other forms of coercion, "the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation" (including the exploitation in prostitution, obviously).

*The asseveration that "evidence suggests that a minority of sex workers in London are trafficked" is based on the report "Migrant Workers in the UK Sex Industry" (Mai N -2009). According to that report, the statement seems to be based on the own perception of the "sex workers" (or prostituted persons), and thus subjective, given the strategies neglecting experiences of exploitation that prostituted people often present; and though not based on the objective facts in line with the UN definition of trafficking.

And this is really worrying! Since it means minimizing the magnitude of a huge issue of slavery and violation of human rights actually present in theUK and in the rest of the EU. It is clear that more training is needed on this topic, and maybe even also a clearer explanation of what trafficking really is.

This article emphasizes on that women suffer both emotionally and physically from gender inequality. Most women are beat by their boyfriends or husbands and can do nothing to control it. This related to the Half the sky Excerpt because the women in the article told about being beaten for reasons that they could not control. Women suffer health issues because of the beatings and abuse.

Helping to fight impunity for sexual crimes in DRC

Helping to fight impunity for sexual crimes in DRC | Gender Violence | Scoop.it

"In 2009, an innovative project began in South Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo to try and bring the perpetrators of sexual crimes to book and so help to combat the prevailing culture of impunity. By supporting mobile gender courts that specifically target sexual crimes, the project sought to bring some measure of justice to communities that had long since given up on the rule of law – and give survivors hope that their attackers would pay for their crimes".

"The American Bar Association/Rule of Law Initiative (ABA/ROLI) is currently co-ordinating the operation of the gender mobile courts, which operate within the structure of the DRC’s justice system and travel to remote areas of South Kivu, where they afford victims of gender-based violence and other crimes a forum in which to hold their assailants – both military and civilian – accountable for abuses".

"In its first 20 months of operation (from October 2009 through August 2011), the mobile gender courts held 14 sessions – hearing 248 cases, with 140 convictions for rape, 49 convictions for other offenses (mostly murder and property crimes) and 44 acquittals. The mobile court also heard the Fizi case, which resulted in the conviction of Lt. Colonel Kibibi for crimes against humanity for his role in the mass rape of over 60 women in the town of Fizi on New Year’s Day 2011".

As Judge Mary McGowan Davis says: "The gender justice mobile courts have unquestionably delivered on their undertaking to bring justice to remote reaches of eastern Congo. Their work is notable for concrete, tangible results that demonstrate to the host communities that actions have consequences and that crime will be punished".
