Egyptian women fight back against sexual harassment - TrustLaw

Egyptian women fight back against sexual harassment - TrustLaw | Gender matters | Scoop.it

Due to the plague of sexual harassment, which the Egyptian authorities have appeared unwilling to address hitherto, Egyptian women have been taking matters into their own hands by organising anti-sexual harassment campaigns. And their efforts are being supported by the growing number of young Egyptian men who have formed anti-harassment squads.

On Sunday Egyptian police and the minister of the interior reported arresting 172 men on charges of sexual harassment and assault during the first two days of Eid Al Adha, one of Islam’s holiest holidays which began on Friday. While sexual harassment is a daily occurrence in Egypt during holidays there is a sharp increase in the assaults.

Activists behind an initiative called “I witnessed harassment” reported last week that more than 60 percent of women who were in downtown Cairo on Friday were subjected to sexual harassment.

Hotlines were established for women to phone, and groups from the anti-sexual harassment squads patrolled hotspots in downtown Cairo. The activists reported several cases of mobs of men targeting women.

Despite its reluctance to take action the growing number of attacks has forced the government’s hand. Last Monday Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Qandil said that his government was preparing a draft law which would impose harsher penalties against perpetrators of sexual harassment.

The Life: TV show reveals the brutal cost of sex trafficking of women and minors | Washington Times Communities

The Life: TV show reveals the brutal cost of sex trafficking of women and minors | Washington Times Communities | Gender matters | Scoop.it

Produced by George Perez and Mohammad Maaty, The Life will examine, in depth, the causes, experiences, and struggles taking place in the world of under-aged sexual exploitation in New York City; from the perspectives of the exploited (teenagers), the exploiters (pimps), and those involved in the fight against under-aged sex trafficking (law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates, and private investigators, among others).

This will give audiences the most thorough explanation and understanding of how victims of sexual exploitation come to be and what resources exist (and don’t exist) to help them. We will also examine how the legal and law enforcement systems are not yet fully organized and efficient nationwide. Thus, this series also hopes to reshape government policy toward the expansion of resources and protection offered to all child victims of domestic sexual exploitation, regardless of class, race, or gender.

With Q’orianka’s support, Perez and Maaty have created a crowd-sourcing funding campaign for their pilot episode. In order to make this television series project a reality, the producers are asking for donations to help them film the pilot episode.

Brown wants Malala day of action

Brown wants Malala day of action | Gender matters | Scoop.it
The global support for shot Pakistani teenager, Malala Yousafzai, should help to drive the campaign for girls' right to education, says UN education envoy, Gordon Brown.

Almost one million people worldwide have signed their name to call on both the Pakistan government and the United Nations to achieve Malala Yousafzai's aim - that every girl has the opportunity to go to school.

The words "I am Malala" are not only a defiant challenge to the Taliban but a bold assertion that every single girl and boy should have the chance of an education.

Malala's personal campaign may have been halted temporarily, but the millions who now speak up on her behalf must now come together as one in the run up to 10 November so that we must wait no longer for action on education.

For Muslim Women, a Careful Script to Combat Violence | passblue | Gender matters | Scoop.it

In June, the Women’s Learning Partnership, which groups and supports 20 organizations in the developing world, mostly in Muslim countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, published a comprehensive guide to tackling persistent violence through a calibrated series of lessons beginning at home and ending with a global perspective.

The 242-page book, “Victories Over Violence: Ensuring Safety for Women and Girls,” is described as a practitioner’s manual that moves, step by step, from case studies built on real-life stories from countries as diverse as Afghanistan, Malaysia and the United States. Through local group discussions, women can learn that they are not alone in their suffering and that remedies are at hand – though for many they may be distant hopes because even laws and prohibitions where they live may not be enforced, if they exist at all.
