Africa's Most Successful Women: Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu - Forbes

Africa's Most Successful Women: Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu - Forbes | Gender matters | Scoop.it
Ethiopian entrepreneur Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu is building shoe company SoleRebels into an internationally recognized brand.

"By 2004, armed with startup capital sourced from her husband and members of her immediate family, Bethlehem mobilized artistically-gifted members of her community and founded SoleRebels- which has become one of Africa’s most recognizable footwear manufacturers."

"By blending this ancient recycling tradition with contemporary, western-influenced, hip shoe designs, SoleRebels has built a successful footwear brand utilizing a production process that is zero carbon production and very eco-sensitive. All of SoleRebels shoes are hand-crafted by Bethlehem’s staff of over 100 people strictly using Ethiopian craft practices such as hand-spun organic cotton and artisan hand-loomed fabric.  And the company sources all of its raw materials locally".

"Bethlehem has earned significant international recognition for her work at SoleRebels and is now one of Africa’s most recognizable female entrepreneurs. Early last year, she was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In June she won the award of ‘Most Outstanding Businesswoman’ at the annual African Business Awards organized by African Business Magazine, and in November, she was named the ‘Most Valuable Entrepreneur’ at the 2011 Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW)"

The Spanish Government forces the closure of UN Women national delegation || El Gobierno fuerza el cierre de ONU Mujeres en España

The Spanish Government forces the closure of UN Women national delegation || El Gobierno fuerza el cierre de ONU Mujeres en España | Gender matters | Scoop.it
Sandra Isabel Novo Canto's insight:

The Spanish Government (People's Party) forces the closure of UN Women national delegation, even when the agency never meant any cost for the Spanish budget.

It is extremely infrequent that a country invites an UN agency to go without any previous conflict occurring. But it seems that the dialogue between Spain and UN Women became difficult with the new conservative Government.

It is an evidence that the current Government of Spain feels bothered with gender equality policies. This reluctance was made clear with the announcement of the new bill against abortion -criminalised even in cases of fetal malformation-, and other cuts and reforms with negative impacts on gender equality; but the decision of kicking out UN Women shows a lack of diplomacy unbearable for a country like Spain.

Worth mentioning that in the last years Spain had positioned itself as an international reference model in the area of gender equality policies, particularly the fight against gender violence. The former Government of Mr. Zapatero (Socialist Workers Party) had a strong commitment with gender equality, supporting the fight against gender violence at the forefront of national and EU's agenda.

But all these achievements are at a serious risk. It seems that the actual conservative Government is trying to jeopardize everything that has to be with gender, equal opportunities, non-discrimination and social welfare.

Sources from UN expressed concern: "it is unfortunate that Spain now miss the influence achieved in gender issues, is going to have a lower profile within the UN system".

Now it is the turn of the EU to express its repulse against this action.

Saberes Sin Fronteras OVS's curator insight, December 13, 2012 3:04 PM

Helping to fight impunity for sexual crimes in DRC

Helping to fight impunity for sexual crimes in DRC | Gender matters | Scoop.it

"In 2009, an innovative project began in South Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo to try and bring the perpetrators of sexual crimes to book and so help to combat the prevailing culture of impunity. By supporting mobile gender courts that specifically target sexual crimes, the project sought to bring some measure of justice to communities that had long since given up on the rule of law – and give survivors hope that their attackers would pay for their crimes".

"The American Bar Association/Rule of Law Initiative (ABA/ROLI) is currently co-ordinating the operation of the gender mobile courts, which operate within the structure of the DRC’s justice system and travel to remote areas of South Kivu, where they afford victims of gender-based violence and other crimes a forum in which to hold their assailants – both military and civilian – accountable for abuses".

"In its first 20 months of operation (from October 2009 through August 2011), the mobile gender courts held 14 sessions – hearing 248 cases, with 140 convictions for rape, 49 convictions for other offenses (mostly murder and property crimes) and 44 acquittals. The mobile court also heard the Fizi case, which resulted in the conviction of Lt. Colonel Kibibi for crimes against humanity for his role in the mass rape of over 60 women in the town of Fizi on New Year’s Day 2011".

As Judge Mary McGowan Davis says: "The gender justice mobile courts have unquestionably delivered on their undertaking to bring justice to remote reaches of eastern Congo. Their work is notable for concrete, tangible results that demonstrate to the host communities that actions have consequences and that crime will be punished".
