Empowering The Third Billion : Women and The World of Work

Empowering The Third Billion : Women and The World of Work | gender mainstreaming | Scoop.it
View the results of Booz & Company's Third Billion Index, which ranks over 128 countries on their preparedness in empowering women as economic agents.

As growing numbers of women enter the economic mainstream, they will have a profound effect on global business.

A huge and fast-growing group of people are poised to take their place in the economic mainstream over the next decade, as employees, employers, producers, and entrepreneurs. This group’s impact on the global economy will be at least as significant as that of the billion-plus populations in both China and India. But its members have not yet attracted the attention they deserve. China and India each represent 1 billion emerging participants in the global marketplace, and this group of the same size, this “third billion,” is made up of women, in both developing and industrialized nations.

BARBIE GIRLS VERSUS SEA MONSTERS Children constructing gender

Children Constructing Gender

MICHAEL A. MESSNER
University of Southern California

Recent research on children's worlds has revealed how gender varies in salience across social contexts. Building on this observation, the author examines a highly salient gendered moment of group life among four- and five-year-old children at a youth soccer opening ceremony, where gender boundaries were activated and enforced in ways that constructed an apparently “natural” categorical difference between the girls and the boys. The author employs a multilevel analytical framework to explore (1) how children “do gender” at the level of interaction or performance, (2) how the structured gender regime constrains and enables the actions of children and parents, and (3) how children's gendered immersion in popular culture provides symbolic resources with which children and parents actively create (or disrupt) categorical differences. The article ends with a discussion of how gendered interactions, structure, and cultural meanings are intertwined, in both mutually reinforcing and contradictory ways.

Marion Chapsal's curator insight, February 19, 2013 12:47 PM

Love this conclusion:

"Our goal should be to develop work-life policies that enable people to put their gender values into practice. So let’s stop arguing about the hard choices women make and help more women and men avoid such hard choices. To do that, we must stop seeing work-family policy as a women’s issue and start seeing it as a human rights issue that affects parents, children, partners, singles and elders. Feminists should certainly support this campaign. But they don’t need to own it."

Annabel Kaye's curator insight, February 19, 2013 5:08 PM

In the UK we are about to share flexible maternity leave, flexible working requests and more.  Are we getting to the point when we can change the stereotypes?

Fertiliser price risk management tools are limited in the UK due to there being no European fertiliser futures market. Despite recent declines in global cereal and oilseed prices, new crop returns are expected to remain sufficient enough to stimulate further growth in global fertiliser demand. However, fertiliser supply expansion should keep pace with demand growth on a longer term basis.

Wise leadership isn't a gender issue

Marion Chapsal's curator insight, February 21, 2013 7:18 AM

Extract:

"One of the most valuable reasons to move the conversation away from gendered differences in leadership style, is that it obscures the real question of what works best, when.

In politics, perception often rules the day, and Americans tend not to like their leaders “wishy-washy.” This leads to all kinds of trouble, as demonstrating the kind of “backbone” that keeps you in office can easily translate into making stupid – yet definitive – decisions. There’s a good chance that our lingering love of certainty (well-informed or otherwise) is a hangover from old, gendered notions of what’s “manly” and what isn’t, which continue to be reinforced in our most successful action movies; these haven’t evolved much beyond John Wayne Westerns in terms of the basic notions of what constitutes strength and weakness. Strength is beating people up. Weakness is getting beaten (or not fighting at all).

Yet a sober analysis makes plain the fact that successful leadership means arriving at the best possible outcomes in the long-term, which often involves a subtler and less martial approach. Whether women, or men, or both invented it – empathy, even in adversarial relationships, is invariably the wisest approach."

I agree that we need to move the conversation away from gender "differences", implying men and women are "by nature" different. This approach is prejudicial actually for both men and women and boxes women in the stereotypes of the softer, gentler, more intuitive and more sociable sex. In doing that, we deny the men the "natural" gift of kindness, humility and empathy, for which the world is so much craving.

Let's debunk the myths around feminity and masculinity and re-invent an integrative global Leadership, taking into account cultural differences, values, preferences, generations and individual differences!

Time to raise awareness.

Erika Watson's curator insight, January 8, 2013 5:10 PM

It's unbelievable that young women are taught classes at University to "avoid rape" in the States and no class "don't rape", at freshman orientation.

As always, Liza Donnelly uses her creative talent to foster a change in our mind first, in our representations, so that it eventually translates into action.

Bravo Liza!
