Jacob Brock's insight:

This article appears in my ScoopIt because it speaks directly to the problem of infanticide.  Anybody who does not realize the severity of this has to read this article.  The personal example is horrifying, maybe more so than some in Half The Sky.

Jacob Brock's insight:

Many people believe that traffiking is something happening far away, or it doesn't exist.  THis article is here to open the eyes of anyone that thinks this.  Half The Sky deals with many cases that occur across the world.  There are many cases that occur in the US, and people still don't care!

Children at Risk for Trafficking in Wake of Typhoon | Gender_Inequality_HalfTheSky_By_JBrock | Scoop.it
Aid agencies estimate that up to 2 million children may be at increased risk for trafficking in the wake of the disaster.
Jacob Brock's insight:

This article illustrates an important point that should be here:  Many traffiked induviduals are minors.  People will take advantage of them looking for jobs or money, and then kidnap them.  The horror of it all is must be terrible to go through at a young age.  Most of the examples in Half The Sky are of women who were trafficked at a young age.

When we focus on rape, what do we miss? | Oxfam International Blogs

When we focus on rape, what do we miss? | Oxfam International Blogs | Gender_Inequality_HalfTheSky_By_JBrock | Scoop.it
Jacob Brock's insight:

This article raises an interesting, and important, question, which answer needs to be found.  What do we miss?  many already know that rape can be a major problem in countries with little gender equality.  But, there are also cases of may other crimes, like infanticide, forced marriages, domestic violence, etc.  Some worry that a focus on rape is putting other crimes out of the spotlight.  Half the sky, while describing many rapes, also shows us other aspects of these crimes.

US-INDIA-GIRLS:Some Indian laws reinforce gender inequality, U.N. study finds
Jacob Brock's insight:

The fact that there are still laws in place discriminating against women would shock many people.  This article illuminates the point and makes you wonder:  How?  There are still laws that forbid widows from inheritance.  The legal system is doing almost nothing for any of the issues in Half The Sky.  A example is a policeman, looking for pirated DVD's, but didn't care about traffiking.

Jacob Brock's insight:

Anybody who has read Half The Sky is all too familiar with these stories.  For those who didn't, this is a look into the work being done to help stop human trafficking.  An important read.

Not Just Another Gender-based Violence Statistic

Not Just Another Gender-based Violence Statistic | Gender_Inequality_HalfTheSky_By_JBrock | Scoop.it
Let's talk about sexual and physical violence -- about how it violates the body, how it violently strips self agency of women -- and the anger, powerlessness, silence, confinement, strength, abruption, dreams, hopes, dance that it elicits.
Jacob Brock's insight:

This article must have been designed to make you feel something.  If anyone is unmoved by boring statistics, they need to read this article.  Half The Sky also turns the statistics into something more real.  There needs to be more of these personal examples.

Liz Giles's curator insight, July 17, 2015 7:49 AM

I am a strong believer in the need to collect better more robust data to aid in approaches that are serious about eliminating or event reducing gender based violence.

But articles such as this one by Fatou Wurie are where I go to remember why I care about data in the first place

The War Against Girls | Gender_Inequality_HalfTheSky_By_JBrock | Scoop.it
Jonathan V. Last reviews Mara Hvistendahl's "Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, And the Consequences of a World Full of Men."
Jacob Brock's insight:

Another article outlining infanticides, this one focuses more on abortions, another important issue that needs to be in this ScoopIt.  The global sex ratio is 107, biologically impossible.  What people need to know is, like explained in Half The Sky, millions of women are missing.  People just want to have boys more than girls, and now they can know what they are going to be.
