Essay: Women of India: The Mixed Truth by Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize Winner in Economics | gender inequality | Scoop.it
Public anger at gender inequality in India must be seen as an important—and long-overdue—social development, and it can certainly help in remedying the persistent inequalities from which Indian women suffer.

Gender Inequality plays a big role in India and other countries like India. Gender inequality is unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on gender. Bride burnings, kidnapping, and brothels serve as punishment for " unworthy women". These women live under harsh conditions because some dont have enough money to afford comfortable lives for their family. Their husbands beat them up and constantly degrade them and make derogatory comments toward them.

Elbert Turner's curator insight, October 24, 2013 3:41 AM

This article is related to Half The Sky because these two ladies were in about the same situation, in this article a lady in india got ganged raped by these men that just got done doing drugs and almost died. In Half The Sky a lady named saima was beaten by her deadbeat husband and by her brother-in-law.

This story touches mme because im grateful that these things happened to my or my sisters and i dont want it to happen so it is a wake up call for me, to see what is happening in other besides the United States.

I think this is a good source because the rates in india for missing and killed women are high and this source is realting on that.

I included this article because it shows how even in relatively developed countries like Israel, women still are not equal to men. Anyone who thinks that in MDCs women and men are completely equal. This relates to HTS because it shows how women are not just being discriminated against in LDCs, but also in countries in higher stages of the demographic cycle.

New gender inequality index shows women still lag behind men in Israel. Sadly the only area in which women steadily closed gap during 2004-2011 was education. Just as Saima in section 1 of “Half the Sky” reveals the success woman can have in small business and the drive to achieve such , it is most important the change the social role of women and recognize their abilities to handle not only a higher education but a business or career with great success. While Saima was able to overcome hardships, may are still faces with excessive barriers towards improving their lives due to gender inequality. This barrier being taking down will prove an asset to all. It is important to help others see this inequality in order for support o rally in order of this movement throughout the world.

Women can do anything men can do. There are many campaigns worldwide to raise awareness about gender inequality and they have millions of supporters. The empowerment of women is the solution to the end of gender inequality. The authors of Half The Sky promote the empowerment of women to help decrease human trafficking, honor killings, genital mutilation, as well as many other things.

Sirila Padi's curator insight, December 5, 2013 7:29 PM

This article appears on my page because gender inequality is such a big topic in the world today. Not only was it popular a while ago, but it still is and the only way to stop it is by awareness. Some people don't even know how their actions itself can easily display this. Honestly, anyone would benefit from reading and viewing this because it really shows how are society thinks. Through this, hopefully we can come together and change this so that when you type "Women cannot" in a google search these wont show up. This related specifically to our reading of Half the Sky because it shows again the big topic of gender inequality. It shows the difference or the stereotype that women cant do something because they are a women. This should not be how the world operates. Women can do every single thing that men can do. Its not that they can't do it, yet instead its all about first offering them an oppurtunity to do it so that we can prove those that think this wrong!

hannah's curator insight, April 27, 2014 9:21 PM

found this article to produce intersting results . It gives apublic view of private thinking about women verse men's oles and rights. While we often of the inequality exmaples of such things as  baby girls in China being mistreated or killed or boys being fed more in Indian. We tend to think the more western world holds women to different standards, this google seach research project from the United Nations demonstrated that there remains unequalities among the thinking of various educated and urban minds of both men but even very much so in women proving feminist movement remain important in promoting change.in this pattern of social thinking.
