Gender Dysphoria: what does it mean to feel more like the opposite sex? | Gender Dysphoria | Scoop.it

Crystel Hamilton's insight:

This paper really hits on some important points for gender stereotypes. There are no universal stereotypes for behavior, so why do we put men and women into little boxes that says that's masculine and that's feminine? Its also interesting to look at what your appearance says about you, because it is tied to a basic level to who we feel ourselves to be.

This article asks you to question what makes a man a man and a woman a woman. There's not a certain checklist you can go down and say "Okay this is what makes me this gender." Every person is different men can be stay-at-home fathers and women can be CEO's. If the lines of what makes a man a man and a woman a woman are already blurry as it is, who are we to judge a person born a man but feels like a woman?

Crystel Hamilton's insight:

Laws are changing for transgenders in the school systems in California. Students  may soon be able to use bathrooms, locker rooms, and participate in  sex-segregated actives that correspond with their expressed genders; instead of what their records say. Although people who are fighting against this state, that their may be abuse of the situation, and or awkward encounters in the bathroom and locker rooms.

Crystel Hamilton's insight:

The University of California Davis Health Systems will now be making record of sexual orientation and gender identity. They say that with recording this information that health care facilities will be able to provide better care for those classified as LGBTQ; and that it will make these communities'  health a priority.

The ability to label your electronic health records with your sexual orientation, and gender identity seems  wrong to me. Especially in a time when there are still hate crimes happening to this population. It would seem safer if health care providers advertised that they are LGBTQ friendly and are happy to work with this population.  That way LGBTQ population don't have to a label on their electronic health record of their sexual orientation and gender identity. I think people should have a right to privacy, and not have to label themselves.

Crystel Hamilton's insight:

It is normal to some degree for children to be "tomboyish" or non-conform to gender behaviors. What do you do when you suspect your child may be gender dysphoric? A parent should seek help for their child and family when it starts to cause distress for the child and the family. There are many resources and options available for the child, depending on their age, and severity of discomfort with their gender.

New Pre-Surgery Protocols for Transgender Teens

New Pre-Surgery Protocols for Transgender Teens | Gender Dysphoria | Scoop.it
The Philadelphia Center for Transgender Surgery’s founder Dr. Sherman Leis says that as people come to terms with gender dysphoria earlier, new surgery protocols are needed for trans teens.
Crystel Hamilton's insight:

Many youth are now coming out about being gender dysphoric at younger ages. This may be due to the awareness, and acceptance there is around gender dysphoria. Since kids are now able to identify themselves as being unhappy with their gender, doctors are implementing hormone treatment at younger ages. This treatment will postpone puberty, so that the child has time to discover if they are transgender before their bodies start to develop sex characteristic. This could possibly allow for a smoother transition into the gender transition.

Moreover, thanks to expanding transgender education, more supportive parents, and societal acceptance, these children will be able to come to terms with their gender dysphoria so much more quickly.

Crystel Hamilton's insight:

Children are now being able to identify that they are transgender at younger ages than previous generations. Therefore there needs to be protocols to address the needs of the child before they hit puberty. This way the child will not have to go through puberty twice, and they can experience puberty congruent to their desired gender.
