R. v. Ryan: Canada's criminal justice system fails and women pay | rabble.ca

Would meaningful ADR (informal mediation and non-conventional arbitration) be grafted onto the police model as an alternative to mandatory arrests? Currently officers have few choices, and victims may avoid calling except in extreme cases. And, like this woman, may think the only solution is one outside the justice system.

With social media being so popular and accessible these days I think it is important to watch what these kids are doing and posting. They are endangering themselves especially with social media because they are giving access to personal information and putting themselves out there. This creates a number of problems when it comes to sex, rape, abuse, bullying and a number of other things. Although social media is enjoyable and a way to keep in contact, I think that teens use it for the wrong reasons and don’t seem to be very aware of the things they are posting or what they are doing. They don’t understand that this information is endangering them.

This is a perfect example of why rape cases have been treating females as the criminal instead of the victim. Mrs. Jimerson cheated on her husband and then to cover it up, faked evidence and called the police to report that her lover had raped her. The man was placed in jail for 20 days before Jimerson's information didn't add up and she confessed to faking the crime. The worst part of the whole incident is that Jimerson was given 10 years for this class B Felony, but Jimerson was given 10 years suspended, she did spend 24 days in jail... Divided up into 12 weekends. If I were the judge in charge, Jimerson would be in jail for much longer with no time suspended. Set an example of her to deter other would be liars so that the ones who legitimately have been raped aren't treated like it's their fault.

To be perfectly honest, I don't see a huge issue with the photos. Maybe it's because of the particular subculture I have become so accustomed to, but really, it's art. Any BFA student will tell you, "it's artistic expression, man. I totally see how the cuts and bruises on the models is a social commentary on bla bla bla, and people need to see it if they want to be informed". Whatever. It's art. It's not. The cuts aren't real. The models got paid. If people really want to have a problem with the portrayal of violence in media, maybe start with something that Actually portrays violence against women, like the Lifetime channel. That is clearly Not for women. Unless women like to be reminded that at any moment, any man within a hundred mile radius IS GOING to rape/stab/steal your children/burn/shoot/hit/kill you. I know I don't. Now That's something to get upset about.
D-Moody's comment, July 1, 2012 10:08 PM
I do not see why everyone is looking at these pictures and assuming they have anything to do with domestic abuse. It does not say “Victims of Marriage”, it says “Victims of Beauty”. For all anyone knows, these women got in to a fight over who was the most attractive and kicked the crap out of each other. It is always ridiculous when people get all bent out of shape over small things like this. There are actual cases of domestic abuse that would benefit from this level of attention, but instead people are complaining about some art. I guess maybe being beautiful is easy after all.

While I understand that rape (or "attempted rape") is a very controversial subject, I believe that art (yes, a videogame rates right up there with paintings, novels, and music) is an expression that allows a broader view of reality. Many novels have full rape scenes instead of just "attempted rape" scenes, movies depict it, and I'm sure there are musicians and painters who have used it in their art. I felt that they did an injustice by not going with the rape as a reason for Lara to kill, of all the situations out there facing females worldwide, this is definitely a time when they should not be afraid to protect themselves. Having a female character like Lara Croft (who has been an iconic female heroine for numerous years) protect herself and kill her assailant is a strong emotional step for females everywhere.
