As far as social sciences go it is dead on proof that even the most unbiased person is still biased and has a very hard time changing. Daniel Kahneman has a book that explains about cognition and decision making. He says that we all use a process of intensity matching to make predictions and support our intuitions and many of the people that just walk by the "thief" intensity match that the young lady is not a thief and therefore use their intuition and predict that she needs help. With the young men we also do something Kahneman describes as answering the easier question. Obviously with further investigation we know both were stealing but with the white guy its easier to answer our internal thoughts with he lost the key to the lock or forgot the code and with the black kid its easier to assume he is stealing. All biases we hope to not experiance in courts and justice but all biases cannot ever be eliminated. Check out an intresting test called the https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/
Maximillian Anderson's comment, June 21, 2013 7:59 PM
ABC's findings were not shocking to me. I know people have preconceived ideas based on race that color how they treat people. What was shocking to me was how many people gathered around the young, black actor when he was working on stealing the bike. I figured more people would ask him if it was his, stay for a while, then leave. But I didn't think that a mob of people would show up around him. I find myself thinking in terms of these preconceived ideas too. Luckily, I can catch myself and I try to treat people as fairly as possible and listen to what everyone of every background has to say. Unfortunately, some things can be inferred about what's on the inside of people by what's on the outside. By "what's on the outside" I don't mean skin color because people can't control that. I mean things like clothing, attitude, word choice, etc. Interestingly, both of the male actors were wearing similar clothes but they weren't the same. The white actor was wearing a blue shirt and jeans that appeared to fit regularly. The black actor's pants looked to be sagging a little and he had a longer, red-colored t-shirt. This reminds me of when I saw a special on race and cameras followed two actors around for a day. Both men's characters had similar credentials and clothing styles but were treated very differently. In stores, the white actor was given positive attention at stores and a car dealership. The black actor was given mostly negative attention at stores and the car dealer offered him a worse deal than his white counterpart.

I was not surprised by the results of this hidden camera experiment. Instead on dressing the boys in a similar manner I would have liked to see them reverse the typical roles. I think it would have made the experiment interesting to dress the white male in a very stereotypical “thug-like” manner and then have the black male on the other extreme in something more like business attire. I found the part with the girl to be extremely interesting. It shows how even married men are willing to “rescue” a girl in need. This to me is direct evidence that shows why women are a distraction in our military and should not be allow to participate in combat or go on over sea deployments.

Parental incarceration can be worse for a child than divorce or death of a parent | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
With more than 2 million people behind bars, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This mass incarceration has serious implications for not only the inmates, but their children. The study found significant health problems, including behavioral issues, in children of incarcerated parents and also that, for some types of health outcomes, parental incarceration can be more detrimental to a child’s well-being than divorce or the death of a parent.

Charges: Couple took, intended to hurt Amish girls

Charges: Couple took, intended to hurt Amish girls | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) â€" A northern New York couple was arraigned late Friday on charges they intended to physically harm or sexually abuse two Amish sisters after abducting them from a roadside farm stand. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office issued a statement late Friday saying the arrests of Howells and Vaisey "no doubt saved young children from future abuse." "The suspects agreed to go to the sheriff's office to be interviewed earlier today and they were arrested after those interviews," Rain said. The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of alleged sexual abuse. The 7-year-old and 12-year-old vanished Wednesday evening in Oswegatchie, touching off a massive search in the farming community near the Canadian border.
