Seriously, who does that? Your parents are supposed to love you unconditionally, not matter what. To think that I have to be on guard when around my parents because they might shoot me is crazy. This is one of those cases where you wish he didn’t kill himself. I would have loved to know why in the world he would not only shoot to kill both his daughters but to also kill himself and with three grandkids in the house. I couldn’t imagine what they must now endure having no mother. This is just an utterly sad story. I hope they are able to investigate it more and find out the motives of this man.

Campus Sex Assaults: Will Trump Weaken Title IX Protections? | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ announcement that she wants a “better” approach to campus sex assaults has stoked fears that the Trump administration will weaken existing federal legislation banning gender bias in education. TCR examines the reaction from both sides.

The Trump administration has no idea what is happening and I wish that they would leave this alone. This protection that Obama created was a step in the right direction and DeVos is trying to make us step backward two steps.
Hope Allen's comment, September 24, 1:12 AM
While I would agree that taking away any protection from gender bias in education would be a step in the wrong direction, I also recognize that the system we are using right now isn't the best it could be. With that in mind, I hope they will actually try to find a "better" approach to campus safety.

One team set up a MASH unit in the parking lot and saw over 40 patients, removed stitches, changed dressings and scheduled those patients to return later this week for follow up,” says Conroy. “For those that sheltered in place, thank you for the care and comfort you gave to patients and their families during this stressful time.”

Murder charges and child endangerment yes this just horrible in every way. I will definitely want to gather and understanding of this case once it unfolds.

The Education Department announced Friday it is formally rescinding Obama-era guidance on how schools should handle sexual assaults under Title IX federal law.

As part of the interim guidance, the department released a Q&A outlining recommendations on how schools should respond, including guidance on what schools are obligated to do in response to allegations and their flexibility in establishing their own procedures.

Georgia Tech Student-Activist Shot Dead by Campus Police

Georgia Tech Student-Activist Shot Dead by Campus Police | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it

A engineering student who was also an LGBTQ activist was shot and killed by Georgia Tech campus police on Saturday night, officials said Sunday.

The school identified the victim as Scout Schultz, 21, a fourth year engineering student from Lilburn, Georgia, who police said was armed with a knife. They made contact with him outside of a campus parking garage after they received a 911 call at 11:17 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The original call reported that Schultz was also carrying a gun, officials said.

In a video taken by a witness, Schultz can be heard yelling "Shoot me!" at police, as they tell him to drop the knife.

"Nobody wants to hurt you," an officer says in the video.

But as Schultz continued to ignore the officers commands and stepped forward with the knife, a single shot rang out and Schultz's screams can be heard.

The young engineering student was transported to and later died at Grady Memorial Hospital.

"A non serious sex crime" Not sure which sex crime is not serious to the victim. I understand parts of this legislation but the goal of reducing the overall number of people registered to lessen the burden on law enforcement does not really make sense to me. If the registry helps solve one crime or protect one person I would think it would be worth the time and effort.

Teen’s Suicide Raises Concerns of School Policies, Child Porn Laws

Teen’s Suicide Raises Concerns of School Policies, Child Porn Laws | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
A 16-year-old’s suicide in January has raised questions for both school administrators and law enforcement officials on how to handle possible child pornography crimes involving young students.

The parents of Corey Walgren have sued his school for the way it handled the discovery of a sex video between the teen and a female classmate, reports CNN.

Back in January, Walgren was called into the dean’s office at Naperville North High School to discuss the sex video. Two hours later, Walgren jumped to his death from the top of a five-story parking garage.

Maureen and Doug Walgren have alleged the school traumatized their son by warning him that he could be charged and forced to register as a sex offender for the video. They are seeking $5 million in damages.

“They scared the hell out of the kid, and that’s what drove Corey to kill himself,” says Terry Ekl, the Walgren’s attorney.

Knowledge of the video came after the female classmate who was having sex with Walgren in the video filed a complaint to the school. She had learned about the existence of the video the same day Walgren committed suicide. She says Walgren made the video without her permission.

Walgren showed the video to four friends but did not redistribute it. Neither student was visible, but the video’s audio could be heard.

Ashley von Borstel's comment, September 22, 4:52 PM
This is certainly a sad story and I'm sorry for the loss of the parents. Even though the officer was cleared for doing the right thing, I don't think the school had the right to look into his phone or question him without his parents. He was a minor and he should have been protected. I feel sad that he probably felt cornered and the only way out was suicide. In addition, I understand the seriousness of the situation since he recorded audio of him and a female student having intercourse.

A Plano officer fatally shot the gunman at the scene, authorities say
(CNN)A man shot and killed eight people at a Dallas-area home where people had gathered to watch a Dallas Cowboys football game on TV, authorities say.

A police officer who was called to the home in Plano on Sunday shot and killed the gunman there, authorities said. The gunman was Spencer James Hight, according to the Plano Police Department.
One of the victims, Meredith Hight, 27, was the estranged wife of the gunman, officials said Tuesday. At a news conference on Monday, Plano Police Chief Greg Rushin had said the gunman had a connection to the house.
The other victims were Anthony Cross, 33; Olivia Deffner, 24; James Dunlop, 29; Darryl Hawkins, 22; Rion Morgan, 31; Myah Bass, 28; and Caleb Edwards, 25, the Plano Police Department said in a news release.
"We've never had a shooting of this magnitude. We've never seen this many victims before. It's just a terrible event," Rushin said.
Calls reporting multiple gunshots came in to Plano Police dispatch around 8 p.m. Sunday. An officer nearby approached the residence two minutes later, where he heard gunfire and found shooting victims in the backyard, Rushin said.
The officer "showed great bravery," immediately engaging and fatally shooting the armed suspect who was inside the residence, Rushin said.
