A million miles away behind her own front door: A Saudi woman's secret apartment

A million miles away behind her own front door: A Saudi woman's secret apartment | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it

Maha Almutairi has a secret apartment. At 35, like most unmarried Saudi women, she still officially lives at home. Her father decides what can and can't happen in his home. Decisions about what she will study, where she will work, all are subject to her father's permission.

She lives in an apartment in a building her father owns, but he refuses to allow cats anywhere in the building.

However, a new company rents apartments to women without a male family member's permission, so Maha secretly "lives" in her father's building, but actually lives across town in an apartment with her cats.

How does this happen? THat's what I don't understand. Does no one pay attention? Are their former friends, family, loved ones so unaware? This is tragic, not only for the events that have already taken place, but for the fact that this family is mentally and emotionally scarred, indefinitely. The psychological scars that they now possess will haunt them endlessly, which is I think personally is the biggest crime that can be committed against someone.

Ohio man hid corpse in freezer as new girlfriend moved in, police... | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
An Ohio man is accused of stashing the remains of what police believe is his missing former girlfriend in a freezer that he bought with his new, live-in girlfriend, according to a criminal complaint filed in court on Tuesday.

After Katrina Layton moved in last month with Arturo Novoa in Youngstown, Ohio, she began using the telephone of Novoa's missing former girlfriend, driving her car and caring for her dog, according to a police report included in the complaint.

Layton and Novoa have been charged with the abuse of a corpse, which was discovered on Saturday in several bags inside the freezer by Novoa's landlord's wife.

Novoa had asked his landlord if he could move the freezer down to the landlord's basement because his electricity had been shut off and "he didn't want his freezer full of meat to spoil," the police report said. The landlord's wife became suspicious after seeing the freezer was padlocked, and decided to break in.

This article has honestly left me speechless. He had no criminal history, but I’m wondering if this man had some type of underlying mental illness that ultimately contributed to him murdering his wife. You’d think if their relationship was rocky or if she had any suspicion that he would be inclined to hurt her, that they wouldn’t be on vacation together. For him to snap and murder her merely because she was laughing at him leads me to believe that he possibly had anger issues, or some type of other underlying mental illness.

Pell and high water: Australia’s clergy

Pell and high water: Australia’s clergy | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
In recent decades nearly 60 Catholic bishops have been accused of abusing children, but few have ever faced criminal charges. George Pell, an Australian cardinal who—for now—manages the Vatican’s finances, recently became the highest-ranking clergyman to be indicted for such crimes. Today he stood before a Melbourne court accused of multiple historical sex offences. Earlier this year a royal commission inquiry into child abuse in Australia heard allegations that Cardinal Pell mishandled cases against colleagues, and offended against minors himself; he strongly denies the claims. In total, the commission found 1,880 alleged perpetrators of sex crimes within Australia’s Catholic church, a third of whom were priests. In some orders, up to 40% of members were accused of abuse over the 60 years to 2010. So far Pope Francis has rejected calls to remove Cardinal Pell. This case will test his efforts to face up to an unholy mess.

NPR Identifies False Accuser As ‘Survivor' | NewBostonPost | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
A Boston-based National Public Radio correspondent received a torrent of criticism over the weekend after she defended the media organization’s decision to refer to a Columbia University student who falsely accused another student of rape as a “survivor.”
The piece, produced for NPR’s “All Things Considered,” examined a new approach to adjudicating campus sexual assault allegations known as “restorative justice.” NPR correspondent Tovia Smith said the proposed practice involves focusing on the harm done “and finding ways to repair it” instead of “judging or punishing the perpetrator.”
Smith quoted in her report an activist named Emma Sulkowicz, whom she described as a “survivor.”

Tina Ryman's comment, July 30, 7:29 PM
This one hits pretty close to home since I grew up in SE AK and am currently living in Juneau. I will say that I am constantly fascinated by the number of deaths and disappearances that seem to on cruiseships. I know that most of them are not often associated with foul play, but I have to wonder what does cause it to happens so frequently. Is it just because of the sheer numbers of people on cruises every season, the age of the passengers or other factors like alcohol consumption? Probably a combination of these and other factors.
Rob Duke's comment, August 10, 1:14 PM
I would have never thought twice about this, but nearly a decade ago a woman from the town where I was policing in California disappeared while on a cruise on the Inside Passage. As you say, it's more common than you'd think. I was impressed by the monitoring equipment that the cruise ships have and how they knew almost immediately that, in our case, there hadn't been any foul play.

I can finally say I’ve heard it all! What makes this case so strange is the fact that the ex-boyfriends new wife was framing her and that she also faked her pregnancy. I’d like to know how the new wife was able to successfully convince investigators that the ex-girlfriend was sending her rape threats, and footage threatening to hurt her.
