Pauline Boudry, Renate Lorenz, and Loretta Fahrenholz | e-flux

Pauline Boudry, Renate Lorenz, and Loretta Fahrenholz | e-flux | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz are among the artists who engage in an archaeology of queer culture with extraordinary precision and critical foresight. Conceiving performances for the camera, they create a dense network, referencing experimental film, the history of photography, and underground (drag) performance to develop pioneering forms of activist aesthetics. Their films reveal the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination, while simultaneously making the emancipatory power of desire and transgression tangible. [...]

Loretta Fahrenholz is an artist and filmmaker who lives between New York and Berlin. She investigates different social milieus and the various fictions and desires that are played out, with whatever degree of intention, among actors, narratives, and the given means of production."

"Unlivable", an exhibition by Janet Biggs & Kari Soinio opens at Station Independent Projects

"Unlivable", an exhibition by Janet Biggs & Kari Soinio opens at Station Independent Projects | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"NEW YORK, NY.- Dwelling is, or should be a basic human right. Yet we know that for many people, in many places around the globe, it is, or is becoming difficult, if not impossible.

[...]

Janet Biggs and Kari Soinio both make their artworks in environments we may think uninhabitable, even though in very different ways. Biggs travels – from a Western perspective – to extreme sites: to the mines of freezing Svalbarden and volcanic Indonesia. Soinio contemplates the rapidly changing cityscape of New York: its streets, its highly contested air space, and routes underground used by millions but noticed by few. Both artists are concerned about the effects humans have on nature, and aware of the contingent value given to the intersections of gender, class, ethnicity and color. [...]"

The exhibition is on view at Station Independent Projects, New York,  from August 13th through September 6th.

Exhibition of nine silkscreens by Niki de Saint Phalle on view at Nohra Haime Gallery

Exhibition of nine silkscreens by Niki de Saint Phalle on view at Nohra Haime Gallery | Gender and art | Scoop.it

NEW YORK, NY.- Niki de Saint Phalle's CALIFORNIAN DIARY is on view at Nohra Haime Gallery from August 4th to September 12th, 2015.

Considered one of the most preeminent female artists of the 20th Century, Niki de Saint Phalle's work is intimately linked to California, her home for almost a decade until her death in 2002. This exhibition of nine silkscreens visually records her experiences on the West Coast. In them, Saint Phalle expressed philosophical, socio-critical and intimate thoughts in a colorful, non-threatening format, something she had done with the MY LOVE series in the late 60's, a universal love letter with a similar doodles and calligraphy.

Parodies

Parodies | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Frances Stark and the Art of Narcissism

Frances Stark and the Art of Narcissism | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Portrait of the Artist as Full-on-Bird, 2004

"The artist Frances Stark has been known to insist that she is a writer. It’s true that she is the author of many essays, which have been anthologized twice and are marked by a witty, stream-of-consciousness style full of surprising digressions, connections and confessions. It is not uncommon, for instance, for her to reveal that she has taken a pause of a few months in between sentences. But her insistence on being a writer is perhaps also related to the fact that her artwork is marked by a dense, literary quality; she tends to gravitate toward idiosyncratic, unexpected forms of self-expression, from annotations of poetry to conversations in chat rooms to rap, which she refers to as an emancipatory form of autobiography. [...]"

'Accepting anything among everything' is a quote from Hanne Darboven that elucidates the concerns of the artist who pinned down the chaos of the world with seemingly simple, often mathematical, systems. Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and the Gendering of Martyrdom

Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and the Gendering of Martyrdom | Gender and art | Scoop.it
In the same season we’ve been presented with two different comprehensive documentaries of two of our most iconic and tragic, gone-too-soon figures in recent decades. Brett Morgan’s Montage of Heck depicts the slow unraveling of Kurt Cobain in the preamble to his suicide, Asif Kapadia’s Amy depicts a corollary narrative about Amy Winehouse’s life, and in the process sheds light on how unequal the treatment of male and female artists truly is, even in death.
