Naked Men Draw Women, Enraged Philistines to Vienna

Naked Men Draw Women, Enraged Philistines to Vienna | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Naked men are much more interesting than naked women. That might sound subjective and it is, partly. Yet I have some good arguments to back it up. Austria is the place to go to ogle hundreds of men with no clothes on. Both the Leopold Museum in Vienna and the Lentos Museum in Linz -- independently and, apparently, coincidentally-- are exposing the male sex in big exhibitions. Both museums report a rise in the proportion of female visitors..."

Chiharu Shiota | Between the Lines | Het Noordbrabants Museum | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"The Japanese artist, Chiharu Shiota (Osaka, 1972), was the sensation of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. The Japanese pavilion with her installation, The Key in the Hand, was one of the top five exhibitions in The Guardian that year and it was also on the cover of The New York Times. Shiota’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands offers a retrospective overview of her oeuvre. The installation, Uncertain Journey, made to measure for Het Noordbrabants Museum, is the highlight of the exhibition."

Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch from 24th June to 15th October.

Fahrelnissa Zeid: Tate Modern resurrects artist forgotten by history

Fahrelnissa Zeid: Tate Modern resurrects artist forgotten by history | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"She was an artist of such “force and originality”, says Tate Modern, that it is astonishing that Fahrelnissa Zeid should have been practically forgotten. Now, in the first retrospective of its kind in the UK, Tate Modern hopes to lift the pioneering Turkish artist out of obscurity to ensure that she does not become yet another female artist forgotten by history."

Fahrelnissa Zeid is at Tate Modern, London,  from 13 June until 8 October 2017.

Chromatic Scale: Prints by Polly Apfelbaum | National Museum of Women in the Arts | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Polly Apfelbaum (b. 1955, Abington, PA) employs bright colors and abstract motifs in her prints, using methods that are simultaneously ordered and spontaneous. The performative aspect of her well-known large-scale installations carries over to her printmaking process. Chromatic Scale explores her distinctive approach to prints and how it relates to her work in painting, sculpture, and installation."

Hot under the collar: Venice Biennale artist uses 27,000 neckties for installation

Hot under the collar: Venice Biennale artist uses 27,000 neckties for installation | Gender and art | Scoop.it

UK-based Israeli artist Michal Cole says work is ‘silent embroidered scream’ against global patriarchy.

Few items symbolise masculine pomp and power quite like a necktie – they sit around boardroom tables, witness business deals, attend interviews and are loosened in pubs. But, at this year’s Venice Biennale, one artist has turned 27,000 of these potent strips of silk into a vast artwork which is a “silent embroidered scream” against the global patriarchy.

2 or 3 Tigers - HKW, Berlin

2 or 3 Tigers - HKW, Berlin | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Lieko Shiga, part of the 'Rasen Kaigan' series, 2009

"'2 or 3 Tigers' is a group exhibition about colonialism, media and modernity, specifically in East Asia. The figure of the tiger itself is the medium through which mythological, colonial and modern histories are evoked and folded into the present, highlighting unstable identities and shifting ground, as well as structural continuities and modernization ideologies. Modernity is reflected as a colonial pattern inscribed in the history of nation states, militarization and financialization, but also as a an ontological revolution, as an order that fundamentally upsets social organization, cultural patterns and indeed cosmologies, and that in most societies in the past 200 years has led to a profound crisis of consciousness."

« Alice Neel : Peintre de la vie moderne » – Fondation Vincent van Gogh, Arles | Gender and art | Scoop.it
