"An exhibition in Vienna probes our attitude towards nudity - people in the West have become accustomed to the naked female form, but male nudes can still shock. Before the show opened, the museum even covered up parts of its own posters, saying they had caused public outrage..."

"With Pie Bot, artist Annina Rüst makes her point about male-dominated companies and can eat it, too.

Sometimes, learning about the ratio of men to women working in certain industries can just be depressing. But this coming year, Los Angeles museum-goers will witness of one of the strangest, funniest ways to make a point about workplace gender inequality that we've seen: A robot that presses gender ratio pie charts onto real pies."

Pierre et Gilles unveil a series of previously unseen works at Galerie Daniel Templon

Pierre et Gilles unveil a series of previously unseen works at Galerie Daniel Templon | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Le mariage pour tous, 2013.

For their first exhibition at Galerie Daniel Templon, duo Pierre et Gilles unveiled a series of previously unseen works on the theme of the hero.

The exhibition features a gallery of portraits, from heroic figures of antique mythology such as Achilles and Prometheus to superheroes of popular culture and fiction. We also encounter a number of contemporary heroes, such as a young rebel from the Arab Spring and a happy couple, sporting the artists’ features, celebrating a same-sex marriage.

These hand-painted photographs, unique pieces of art, offer a wholly original reworking of the portrait tradition. Blending the humorous with the solemn, street culture with art history, Pierre et Gilles’ works explore the mysteries of representation and the ambiguity of the hero myth, contributing their own probing psychological insights.

Discover the wide range of Berlin-based artist Isa Genzken at MCA show - Chicago Sun-Times | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Michael Darling, chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, calls Isa Genzken an artist “hiding in plain sight.”

Even though the 65-year-old artist has shown in top galleries and museums internationally since the 1970s and even represented Germany at the prestigious 2007 Venice Biennale, she remains little known even among art-world cognoscenti. New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl confessed a few months ago in a review to being “only spottily aware” of her work.

[...]

The show, which fills the MCA’s main special-exhibition gallery on the fourth floor, comprises nearly 100 objects, spanning the vast range of mediums in which Genzken has worked, including assemblages, paintings, collages, films, performances and artist books."

James Franco exhibits photographs based on Cindy Sherman's work at Pace Gallery in New York | Gender and art | Scoop.it

New Film Stills present a series of gelatin silver print photographs made in 2013 ranging in scale from 40-by-30 inch to 8-by-10 inch. Recreating Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, Franco positions his body in the same pose, attire and scenario as Sherman did as the subject in her stills nearly 30 years ago. “Like Sherman’s characters,” Bidart writes in the introduction to the catalogue, “the figures [Franco] portrays outrun one’s naturalistic expectations in their stoicism and defiance, in their mystery. Somewhere in their expressions they keep an awareness of ‘a connection to the void.’ With this book Franco has made something profound.”

Eleanor Antin show at the ICA explores identity - The Boston Globe

Eleanor Antin show at the ICA explores identity - The Boston Globe | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Eleanor Antin’s “The Adventures of a Nurse,” from 1976.

"Eleanor Antin likes to quote Walt Whitman. “I contain multitudes,” she says more than once in an interview in the catalog for “Multiple Occupancy: Eleanor Antin’s Selves,” a sometimes piercing, often campy exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

The show, organized by Columbia University’s Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery and curated by Emily Liebert, examines several characters the conceptual artist created and portrayed between 1972 and 1991, in video, film, photography, and performance. The impetus to invent characters came in part from her post-modern, feminist awareness of how our identities bind us. “I consider the usual aids to self-definition - sex, age, talent, time, and space - as tyrannical limitations upon my freedom of choice,” she wrote in 1974."

Room Service. On the Hotel in the Arts and Artists in the Hotel | e-flux | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Candida Höfer, Hotel Philadelphia I, 2000

"Numerous myths surround the hotel as a semi-public space. It serves as a mirror for motifs of longing and as a backdrop for events both highly intimate and highly political in nature. Over the past two hundred years the topos of the hotel has increasingly evolved into a subject of art: artists have not only engaged with the motif of the hotel, but they have also appropriated, transformed, and inhabited its spaces. In the exhibition Room Service: On the Hotel in the Arts and Artists in the Hotel, which has already met with a warm reception in the media, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden traces these multi-faceted relationships over time and meets current sensibilities."
