Xavier Hufkens' first exhibition dedicated to the work of Alice Neel opens in Brussels

Xavier Hufkens' first exhibition dedicated to the work of Alice Neel opens in Brussels | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"BRUSSELS.- Xavier Hufkens presents the gallery’s first exhibition dedicated to the work of Alice Neel (1900-1984). Drawn from the artist’s estate, the presentation includes paintings from all periods of Neel’s career, together with a selection of drawings. This is the first showing of her work in Belgium.

Born in Philadelphia in 1900, Alice Neel trained at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and carved out a career as an artist in New York, often in difficult circumstances. Neel’s dedication to the ‘unfashionable’ art of portrait painting and social realism – and this during the decades of abstract expressionism, pop art and minimalism – ensured that her work remained permanently out of kilter with avant-garde artistic developments."

Chercher le garçon : 100 artistes mâles au MAC VAL

Chercher le garçon : 100 artistes mâles au MAC VAL | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Beauty Work: Lessons in Ballet

Beauty Work: Lessons in Ballet | Gender and art | Scoop.it
More than any other art, classical ballet makes gender its problem. The focus is obvious but subtle. Almost every class is two-thirds female and the hallways of a ballet school are always disproportionately pink. But ballet also curates a vision of femininity as the very ideal of its practice.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker: Work/Travail/Arbeid | e-flux | Gender and art | Scoop.it

What would it mean for choreography to perform as an exhibition? That is the question at the origin of Work/Travail/Arbeid, a newly commissioned project by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Straightforward as it may seem, the implications unsettle both how contemporary dance and the art exhibition are conventionally thought, constructed, and experienced.

Florence Henri - Jeu de Paume, Paris

Florence Henri - Jeu de Paume, Paris | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Louise Bourgeois | e-flux | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Over her long career as an artist, Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) developed concepts and formal inventions that later became key positions in contemporary art; these included the use of environmental installation and theatrical formats, and the engagement with psychoanalytic and feminist themes. Both her distinctive sculptural forms and her outstanding drawings and graphic works are second to none. Among the most innovative and sophisticated sculptural works in her extensive Œuvre are the “Cells,” a series of architectural spaces that deal with a range of emotions."

Daylight announces the publication of book of portraits from women's prisons in Afghanistan

Daylight announces the publication of book of portraits from women's prisons in Afghanistan | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"NEW YORK, NY.- Over the course of four years (2010 - 2014), Polish Canadian photographer Gabriela Maj travelled throughout Afghanistan to collect portraits and stories from inside the country's women's prisons, including the most notorious penitentiary for women, Badam Bagh, located on the outskirts of Kabul.

[...]

The majority of the prisoners Maj documented were incarcerated for what are known in Afghanistan as "moral crimes," a term to describe the ways a person may be accused of "zina," or sex between two people who are not married. The offenses these women were accused of include running away from forced marriages, being sold into prostitution, domestic slavery, physical violence generally conducted by their husbands, and rape and involuntary pregnancy."

"The Pale Fox, the expansive installation building on Camille Henrot’s previous project, Grosse Fatigue (2013), deliberately sets out to overwhelm and overtax the viewer. The sheer number of objects, the concentration of the stories behind them, the splicing of different disciplines from the most diverse fields of knowledge, competing principles of classification and, not least, the sensory experience within the space itself, blanketed in an atmospheric, endlessly looped soundtrack (composed by Joakim Bouaziz) and the brilliant azure of the walls and the floor, coalesce en masse to demonstrate the excesses of an unbridled urge to collect and horde, an excessive, almost pathologically compulsive desire for order, which ultimately is condemned to spill over once more to create its own disorder."

Beneath her eyes: a history of North African women in film | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Gillo Pontecorvo’s revolutionary classic The Battle of Algiers ends with an image so emblematic to the comprehension of the Algerian woman, through its powerful homage to her legacy in her society. As with many films from the postcolonial era of North Africa, there’s an intriguing array of female characters, whose journeys towards both personal and social emancipation remain timeless. In light of their reflections as cinematic figures (evoking multiple images of an authentic social discourse) I felt compelled to revisit notable classic and contemporary portrayals, as their spirits may even arouse our own…"

Exhibition about embroidery in contemporary art opens at the National Museum in Oslo

Exhibition about embroidery in contemporary art opens at the National Museum in Oslo | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Flore Gardner, "Chiasmus" (detail), 2013.

OSLO.- If you mention embroidery, many will immediately think of tablecloths with floral vines, bell pulls, or landscapes created through cross-stitching. In recent years, however, embroidery has been taken up again and discussed in contemporary art, thereby showing that preconceived notions should be reassessed. The National Museum’s new exhibition “The Needle’s Eye: Contemporary Embroidery”, to be displayed at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design from 22 February to 16 May 2015, may well be a step in that direction.

The exhibition “The Needle’s Eye: Contemporary Embroidery” focuses on embroidery as an artistic expression. Embroidery as an action and a technique is enmeshed in charged histories about gender roles, status, power, and artistic value, histories that contemporary deliberately exploit in their works. The exhibition also reflects embroidery’s flexibility and scope both in style and in its use of materials.
