Alternative Perspectives: ‘The Mapping Journey Project’ - IAM - Intense Art Magazine | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"This isn’t the first time that Bouchra Khalili’s ‘The Mapping Journey Project’ (2008-11) has been exhibited – it was shown in part two years ago at New York’s New Museum – however, the current context of the accruing refugee crisis and the mainstreaming of anti-migrant discourse has clearly magnified its social and artistic relevance. For IAM, Valerie Behiery reviews Khalili’s current installation, exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and its topical significance."

The Mapping Journey Project’ is on show at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, until 10 October 2016.

Alice Neel: The Subject and Me | The University of Edinburgh - Talbot Rice Gallery

Alice Neel: The Subject and Me | The University of Edinburgh - Talbot Rice Gallery | Gender and art | Scoop.it

29 July - 8 October 2016

"The Subject and Me tells the story of the turbulent events that shaped Alice Neel’s life, through a retrospective of drawings and selection of late paintings. Emphasising the psychological perception that would allow Neel (1900-1984) to produce some of the most striking and resonant portraits of the twentieth century, the exhibition offers candid observations of sexuality, family, childhood, pain and poverty. It is also an important subjective document of life in post-war America."

Zina Saro-Wiwa, The Invisible Man (detail), 2015

Disguise: Masks and Global African Art connects the work of twenty-five contemporary artists with historical African masquerade, using play and provocation to invite viewers to think critically about their world and their place within it. By putting on a mask and becoming someone else, artists reveal hidden realities about society, including those of power, class, and gender, to suggest possibilities for the future.
