The Alexandrite Effect

The Alexandrite Effect | Gemstones Trends | Scoop.it
Discussion about the alexandrite effect as a non-color-constancy phenomenon from the color theory perspective
Catherine Weir's insight:

The strength of color described by Bauer is rarely seen and most stones show either a strong red or purple red or a strong green but usually not both. The older gemological literature is full of references in praise of the beautiful Russian Alexandrites but few of these stones have been seen in the West since the Russian Revolution in 1917. We know that the colors of the original Uralian material represented the Russian Imperial military colors of red and green. However with so few Russian stones available anywhere, we cannot really compare them with alexandrites from more recent discoveries.

5 Tips on how to buy alexandrite ring

5 Tips on how to buy alexandrite ring | Gemstones Trends | Scoop.it

Each alexandrite is individual and it is impossible  to find two that display exactly the same colour change, unless they are cut from the same crystal. An alexandrite with good clarity may display a less dramatic colour change because the silky inclusions often enhance the change.

Catherine Weir's insight:

It's not a bad idea to  buy  loose certified natural alexandrite from a reputable  gem dealer and ask your jeweller to set it for you.

Pearl | Multicolour.com

Pearl | Multicolour.com | Gemstones Trends | Scoop.it

What are the most common colors of alexandrite? | Gemstones Trends | Scoop.it
The traditional view is that the best alexandrite, shifts from emerald green to ruby red, but this hardly ever occurs.
Catherine Weir's insight:

Most alexandrites show either a nice color in daylight or an attractive color under incandescent light. Rarely are both colors bright and vivid and often stones that change to bright red under incandescent light are only brown or almost black in daylight. Conversely, some of the nicest daylight blue green stones only change to faint pink under incandescent light.
