Google's Sergey Brin shows why augmented reality is THE Social Media tool of tomorrow with Google Glass.

Google's Sergey Brin shows why augmented reality is THE Social Media tool of tomorrow with Google Glass. | Geekery Cyclone | Scoop.it

One of Google’s big plans for Glass was to help users capture and share the world as they see it, but that’s clearly not all. As we’ve seen in the concept video, it’s also about facilitating communication and putting more information — think navigation information, or a user’s current speed. The possibilities are certainly “incredible,” but why is Google showing it off? According to Brin, it was because of three things — Google thought it was amazing (it is), it’s very visually striking, and because they wanted to appeal to the developer community. As such, U.S. based developers will be able to pre-order a beta build only at I/O, for the low, low price of $1500.

Why we owe it all to Alan Turing

Why we owe it all to Alan Turing | Geekery Cyclone | Scoop.it
It’s 100 years since the birth of Alan Turing — the brilliant British polymath scientist whose work informs and pervades all of modern computing. Despite a criminally shortened life, he made significant contributions in many fields: helping to break the German ciphers in WWII, designing some of the first digital computers, defining the field of Artificial Intelligence and conducting research in mathematics, biology and physics.

9 Apps To Easily Make 3D Printable Objects

9 Apps To Easily Make 3D Printable Objects | Geekery Cyclone | Scoop.it

One of the problems with 3D printing is getting a hold of things to print. You can of course download pre-made objects from a variety of places like Thingiverse; but if you want something unique and made by you, that’s where things get a little difficult. Here are 9 quick and easy apps for making something a little more unique.

Artistic 7 min documentary about the wonders of Projection Mapping - Augmented Reality's Eye Candy

Augumented Reality’, is a short film documentary by Belgium filmmaker Dane Luttik that explores projection mapping; what it is, how its used and how far its come. So what is it? Well as any video or installation artist knows the underlying concept is simple; software to direct projections onto three-dimensional objects, shapes, anything but a flat screen.
Arguably the most proficient artists using this software today are Visual Label AntiVJ – who I’ve posted about before – a group that use mapping to explore art and live music in an incredible way. And it is to AntiVJ that Luttik turns to in his film – a crash course in AntiVJs work including; Eyjafjallajökull, their installation at Nuits Sonores and 3Destruct. Artists Joanie Lemercier, Konstructiv and Ilan Katin provide additional insights about this still evolving technology

Windows 8 Secrets: Internet Explorer 10 will Ship with Adobe Flash Within Windows

Windows 8 Secrets: Internet Explorer 10 will Ship with Adobe Flash Within Windows | Geekery Cyclone | Scoop.it

Two years ago, Microsoft declared that the future of video on the web would be powered by HTML 5. Today, however, a lot of web video content is still delivered via Adobe Flash technology. So, in a somewhat surprising move, Microsoft is integrating Flash directly into Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 and doing so in a way that does not undermine the safety and reliability of the Metro environment.

MIT Students Create The Future With An iPad And A Glove | Cult of Mac

MIT Students Create The Future With An iPad And A Glove | Cult of Mac | Geekery Cyclone | Scoop.it

You’ve seen Stephen Spielberg’s film, Minority Report, right? Tom Cruise’s character stands in front of virtual screens, puts on a pair of gloves, and manipulates the data and the memories without touching a thing. Well, the super brains at MIT’s media lab have taken the first step toward that reality, using Apple’s magical device as a display screen and a special glove/attachment combo to interact with it.

The video the group has released shows some pretty fancy stuff, drawing objects in 3D real time, and then manipulating them in collaboration with others. There’s even some slick Minority Report-style interface there, with researches moving red and blue rectangles around in the virtual space they’ve created on the iPad.
