7 Most Overlooked Relationship Killers

7 Most Overlooked Relationship Killers | Geekari | Scoop.it

By Terri Orbuch, PhD

It’s been said that money and sex are the leading relationship killers. True? Perhaps.

But, like death by a thousand paper cuts, little things kill relationships, too.

For nearly three decades, I’ve had a front-row seat to thousands of relationships. My ongoing research—a long-term study funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1986—gives me the opportunity to study, closely and over time, critical patterns in marriage and divorce, romance and relationships. Today, here’s what I know for sure:

Small stuff is a big deal.

Why Over 400 Species of Bacteria In Your Belly Right Now May Be The Key To Health or Disease

Why Over 400 Species of Bacteria In Your Belly Right Now May Be The Key To Health or Disease | Geekari | Scoop.it
Why Over 400 Species of Bacteria In Your Belly Right Now May Be The Key To Health or Disease
Ari Meier's insight:

Get your good bacteria! Taken from the article: Researchers have long postulated that gut bacteria influence brain function. A century ago, Russian embryologist Elie Metchnikoff surmised that a healthy colonic microbial community could help combat senility and that the friendly bacterial strains found in sour milk and yogurt would increase a person's longevity.

In 2011 Mazmanian and colleagues reported that changes in gut microbial composition might have far-ranging effects that extend to the brain.

Mazmanian says, the microorganisms that colonize the human gut don't leave the intestine, but the immune cells that contact them do. He explains that, although 70% of the immune cells in the body at any one time can be found in the intestine, they circulate throughout the body, and the microbiota of the gut environment help determine how immune cells will behave elsewhere. He gives an example: "If T-cells, while in the gut, are programmed by the microbiota to have anti-inflammatory properties, then they may suppress inflammation even after they leave the gut."

Dating Don'ts: 13 Types Of Texters To Be Wary Of

Dating Don'ts: 13 Types Of Texters To Be Wary Of | Geekari | Scoop.it

"As if dating wasn’t hard enough – you throw in a portable, typed-word machine and suddenly it’s pandemonium. Tones, intentions, invitations all get jumbled in this lawless land of shorthand communication. Suddenly the guy you’re dating’s “C u later” message means he’s dumping you when he really just wanted to let you know he’d see you at 8p.m. for Chinese food.

Oh texting, how you make things much, much more complicated than they have any right to be. I can’t tell you the hours my friends and I have spent reciting, decrypting, bemoaning, and conjuring up an honors thesis on a five-word text message."

Where has all the courting gone?

Where has all the courting gone? | Geekari | Scoop.it
Courting is a much sweeter term than ‘dating’. It sounds like it has more intent, more like an agreement that two people enter into with a future in mind. – Kim Cattrall.

The way I used to react to it is as follows (imagine me saying this stuff, to myself, out loud, yes, out loud):

“Call me old fashioned, but shouldn’t there be some courting when it comes to dating, seduction, love, relationships, etc?

It used to be considered a standard when dating with the goal of a long term relationship. I guess not anymore.

What happened?!

I am serious. Where is the damn effort these days? At least act like you are trying for heaven’s sake.”

Harvard Researchers Address Obesity and Toxic Food

Harvard Researchers Address Obesity and Toxic Food | Geekari | Scoop.it
According to the American Heart Association, five percent of American children can now be considered "severely obese," which puts their health at grave risk.
Ari Meier's insight:

"At the heart of the problem is the issue of toxic food—foods that are heavily processed and purposely designed for maximum “craveability.”  None of this happened by chance. Companies spend untold amounts concocting just the right flavor formulas to keep you coming back for more. To illustrate my point, consider this: Researchers at the Boston Children's Hospital recently demonstrated that highly processed carbohydrates stimulate brain regions involved in reward and cravings, promoting excess hunger."

30+ Things You Won't Find In the New iPhone 5S

30+ Things You Won't Find In the New iPhone 5S | Geekari | Scoop.it
[This article is still under construction. Please come back later to view the finished version] Apple has a long history of holding back technology from their customers. They do this to ensure you ...
Ari Meier's insight:

"Could Apple has easily added some of these things to the iPhone 5S without increasing it’s price? Absolutely. There is a reason Apple has $150 billion dollars in the bank. They have the highest profit margins of any mobile company. Would these things make the iPhone 5S a better phone? Of course. Who wouldn’t want a faster phone, with a better display, better media streaming, more customization choices and so on. Competition is good because it ensures you get more for your money. Android is a great example of this. Android device makers release more mobile devices in a single month, than Apple does in an entire year. This has allowed Android phones to jump ahead of the iPhone in many areas." - Rick E. Schwartz

Let's Talk About The Orgasm | Geekari | Scoop.it
In 2009, I walked onto the TED stage and gave a talk that included video of a Danish pig inseminator. The topic of the talk was orgasm, and the video related to a centuries-old debate over "upsuck."

The same goal-directed, out-of-the-box thinking that led to the sow stimulation plan, that led Masters and Johnson into the lab with their cervical caps and six bold women, lies squarely at the heart of TED.- Mary Roach

Ask a Guy: What Do Guys Like In a Girl?

Ask a Guy: What Do Guys Like In a Girl? | Geekari | Scoop.it

What do guys like in a girl?  What makes a guy want to date a girl versus not seeing her as “girlfriend material”?  What do men want in a woman that makes them see them as a catch?”

There are going to be differences from guy to guy, but I’m going to try and keep the discussion of “what men want” to the most universal items possible.

I think it’s important to make the distinction between what men want in a relationship andwhat men want with a woman.  Moreover, we also need to factor in what men want in their life.

We need to look at all three areas because they are interconnected.  When you know what men want, then you’ll naturally know what makes a man choose one girl to be his girl for the long term.

First, what do men want in their life?

Learn the Art of Intellectual Foreplay

Learn the Art of Intellectual Foreplay | Geekari | Scoop.it

By Tonya Leigh

“Words really flattering are not those which we propose but those which escape us unthinkably.” ~Ninon de L'Enclos

Suddenly, I realized that the people sitting around that table possessed something that I didn’t: a passion for life coupled with an arsenal of intellectual and conversational skills that had somehow escaped me during my over three decades on this earth.

As I watched the playful and at times tense (think Italians flailing their arms around in the air and the French shrugging their shoulders and rolling their eyes) exchange of ideas and opinions, I made another observation. The most captivating woman in the room was not necessarily the most beautiful one or the one carrying the Birkin (now don’t get me wrong, I love a Birkin). She was the one who knew how to use her passion paired with words to charm the audience.

Dr. Amy Fuller's curator insight, July 15, 2013 2:11 AM

My favorite parts of thiis lovely tranformational narrative:

  • In France, words are used as play.  It’s not just what you say, but how you say it.  It didn’t take me long to realize that my direct American-style way of speaking was often viewed as rude (or dull) in a French conversation.  The French have a way of adding humor, wit and charm to very serious topics, making it easier to digest.
  • Conversation is like a dance.  Sometimes, you must let others take the lead but always keep up, unless of course, you don’t like the dance.
  • So, here’s my challenge for you.  Begin to weed out all those things you’ve been taught you should know and begin to indulge yourself in what truly inspires you.
