Yahoo Cocktails - Open source platform for mobile computing by Yayoo beyond HTML5

Yahoo Cocktails - Open source platform for mobile computing by Yayoo beyond HTML5 | Gestion de contenus, GED, workflows, ECM | Scoop.it

The battle rages as to what works best--native apps or HTML 5. Here's the bet Yahoo is making.

With the evolution of Web technologies as our guiding principle, Yahoo developed a Web application development platform called Yahoo Cocktails to tackle these challenges. Our platform combines basic ingredients that exist on the Web already, including HTTP and HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting and animation effects, and JavaScript for more sophisticated programming (both on a Web server and on individual devices). Yahoo Cocktails overcomes five big shortcomings of native-only or HTML5-only development.

Cocktails aims to help shape how people will use the Internet in the next decade, especially with connected devices. Because we recognize the danger in this technology becoming proprietary, we will be making our first Cocktail, Mojito, open-source within a few weeks, to evolve the Web into an open platform for application development. We encourage developers to download the Mojito code from GitHub or from developer.yahoo.com and provide us with their feedback.
Bruno Fernandez-Ruiz leads the technical and strategic direction of Yahoo's cloud and platform team. He heads the design of Cocktails, Yahoo's technology stack to provide connected devices with continuous, dynamic, immersive and personalized services running on the cloud.

iPad 3: Who Will Buy One, and Why? [INFOGRAPHIC]

iPad 3: Who Will Buy One, and Why? [INFOGRAPHIC] | Gestion de contenus, GED, workflows, ECM | Scoop.it

How well will the iPad 3 sell when it’s introduced next month? Who’s going to upgrade, and who will sit on the sidelines, enjoying their current version of the iPad, or no iPad at all? We have answers to those questions and more in this exclusive infographic created by the experts at AYTM Research (Ask Your Target Market), with help from Mashable.

The official introduction of the iPad 3 is bearing down upon us, with most rumors placing the Apple press event on March 7 (and a little rumor we heard placing it on March 6). It’ll probably have a higher-resolution 2048×1536 “retina” display, a 1GHz quad-core Apple A6 processor, 4G connectivity, and it might have a few other surprises, too.

Until we can lay eyes on the real thing, let’s take a look at this infographic, which deals with who’s going to upgrade, and what people expect to do with the iPad 3.

To get this data, researchers at AYTM conducted two surveys, with questions we assisted in developing. One was of 2,000 Americans who don’t own an iPad, and the other questionnaire queried 500 iPad owners. Both were conducted this month. Here’s AYTM’s full interactive stats report for the iPad owners part of the study.

Survey: A Quarter Of All Doctors In Europe Use iPads Professionally

Survey: A Quarter Of All Doctors In Europe Use iPads Professionally | Gestion de contenus, GED, workflows, ECM | Scoop.it
First, a word of caution: the Manhattan Research survey that yielded this data was performed online, so that’s going to skew the results straight away. But even taking that into account, it’s powerful data.

According to the survey, just over a quarter of all doctors in the EU — primary care and specialist — use an iPad for professional purposes. That’s a big number for a device primarily aimed at content consumption and not hardened against a hospital environment.

And it seems that the doctors in fact do use it primarily for content consumption: a quarter of their “work online time” is spent on it (55% is still on a desktop), looking up articles, showing online resources to patients, and so on. Right now the market for iPad-oriented productivity software for healthcare appears to be more or less wide open; doctors are using the device (40% planned to buy one in the next six months as well), but more as a portable web browser than a care accessory.

There are some medical apps and services coming to the iPad, but the medical establishment isn’t very quick to move. Many hospitals still use systems from the 90s or before because of the effort and money that would be involved with upgrading. And standards for privacy, emissions, documentation, and so on have to be consistent as well, something that doesn’t happen overnight.

For the moment, the iPad is simply a useful portable screen on which a doctor can pull up relevant info for a patient, browse recent journal articles without going back to their office, or do some light email. It will take a long time for development to catch up with the needs of the community, but this foot in the door by Apple could become extremely valuable a little ways down the line.
