Bradford Young in “Side By Side”: Is Digital Killing Off the Happy Accident? | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

In this Side Swipes clip from “Side By Side”, indie cinematographer Bradford Young (“Pariah,” “Entre Nos”) laments the stolen moments once captured on film, citing a famous example from the great Conrad Hall. With digital, are they gone forever?"

Out Now: Sony Alpha A55 Firmware Hack | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

"It’s real. Sony A55 owners rejoice, for Someone 1.00′s first hack is now available and can be downloaded from the EOSHD forum. The patcher app is able to overcome the A55 firmware encryption and is the basis for adding bitrate patches and new menu options later on. The NEX 5 patcher I also believe is coming later.

Philip Bloom: Review of the Canon 1DX | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

There are a lot of people who are saying DSLRs for pro video work is dead. I have to disagree, it's slowed down but it's far from dead.

Zacuto’s 2012 Camera Shootout Concludes on August 15th, See What You Missed in Parts 1 and 2

Zacuto’s 2012 Camera Shootout Concludes on August 15th, See What You Missed in Parts 1 and 2 | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

Every single Zacuto shootout — and really all camera shootouts for that matter — seem to cause quite a debate. Feelings tend to be hurt if someone’s personal favorite isn’t near the top of the pack, and often more than one individual is unhappy with the way the test is being conducted or shown to the public. I was lucky enough to see the 2012 shootout in person, and while web video will never replicate the theater experience, my favorite scenes weren’t too far off from the majority of viewers — except in regards to the GH2 scene. That scene, to the surprise of many, just so happened to win a blind poll on NoFilmSchool right before part 2 was released. While the first two parts dealt with subjective choices, part 3 should finally reveal the empirical test where each camera is compared objectively.

Stunning Good Looks: Sony FS700 Dynamic Range Presentation.

Stunning Good Looks: Sony FS700 Dynamic Range Presentation. | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it
Sony recently asked Adam Wilt and I to speak about the new FS700 camera at CineGear. My portion of the presentation examined how to profile dynamic range and determine how the various gamma curves changed the camera’s response. Read on to see what I discovered…

I’ve worked as a consultant, both paid and unpaid, to DSC Labs, manufacturers of the best HD color charts in the world. This has some benefits, such as having access to charts that aren’t as easy to find as they should be. One of these charts—the one I consider indispensable when learning how a new camera functions—is the DSC Labs Xyla 20-stop dynamic range chart.

Sony developing full frame A99 as hybrid GH2-like DSLR

Sony developing full frame A99 as hybrid GH2-like DSLR | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

First, the A99 is a result of research made two years ago. Sony asked pro photographers and video makers how they should design the A99 in order to make it a successful camera. The main request was a camera that would have PRO video quality and support. It should outclass the 5D Mark II and the current 5D Mark III for that matter.

“Sony managers and engineers then decided to develop not only an A99 with pro video quality recording but a whole system that can support the camera.

“So what we will see soon is not just a camera, but a new kind of thinking hybrid still and video in one system. The camera is more mature than the A77. It is all about af speed, video quality, fast and high resolution EVF technology, well through accessories and clean image quality.

Inspiring interview with the men who shot inside the Fukushima plant

Inspiring interview with the men who shot inside the Fukushima plant | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

Toby Marshall: "The Fukushima story was something different altogether. A continuing threat, an irreversible poisoning of the environment, with the danger of something really catastrophic happening always present. The deliberate

under-reporting of the extent of the danger made me icily angry, and focused my energy towards a feeling of being personally responsible to try to get good information out past the fog that was being created.
There were times that I felt that perhaps my whole life was about that moment--about risking certain dangers in order to try to help ensure that such a thing would never be allowed to happen again."

Why Zacuto’s Latest Camera Test May Have Screwed Us All

Why Zacuto’s Latest Camera Test May Have Screwed Us All | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

Does a GH2 really look as good as an F65? Only if you have the budget and time to make it so. Sadly this test doesn’t emphasize the latter as much as the former.

This headline from Gizmodo.com struck terror into my heart: “According To Coppola, A $700 Video Camera Beats A $65,000 One.” This is the story of how a well-meaning company has probably made my life as a cinematographer much, much more difficult while trying to make it better.

Good Question: What makes a Pro Monitor Pro?

Good Question: What makes a Pro Monitor Pro? | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

- GEEK ALERT - GEEK ALERT - GEEK ALERT -

There are essentially three “grades” (also called “classes”) of broadcast monitors used in a professional TV production environment. The most rigorous functional requirements are for Grade 1 monitors, which are reference devices for high-grade technical quality evaluation of picture capture, post production, transmission and storage. Grade 1 displays reproduce the highly accurate colors required by the most demanding monitoring applications, including camera control, color grading and content evaluation. EBU Tech 3320 recommends that in a Grade 1 monitor, the black level should be adjustable to be below 0.1cd/m2 (nits), the full screen (sequential) contrast ratio should be above 1000:1, and the simultaneous (within-a-picture) contrast ratio should be above 200:1. Grade 1 monitors should present pictures at a D65 reference white, and Grade 1 and Grade 2 monitors should have no visible pixel defects.

DIY - Replace the DSLR LCD Window (tutorial)

DIY - Replace the DSLR LCD Window (tutorial) | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

"I'm tired of ignoring the seagull like crack on my screen. And instead of paying a crap load to send it back to Canon or local shops for replacement, I looked up a few sites and felt confident that I could handle this myself (The cheap side of me comes in handy when it comes to self-repairing stuff).

Note: This post's about replacing the LCD window/cover, not the entire LCD monitor.

Here's what happened:

After a quick shoot (I think it might have been the first automotive one I did,) I rested my camera in the cup-holders and forgot completely about it. When I pulled the hand brake before exiting the car, I heard a "crack" and the rest was history. I don't recall ever screaming "f*ck" this loud in my head before."

Sony F3 Act II: S-Log, 4:4:4 output and more as standard equipment

Sony F3 Act II: S-Log, 4:4:4 output and more as standard equipment | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

"Sony has refreshed the PMW-F3 Super 35mm camcorder, reconfiguring it as the PMW-F3/RGB. The last three letters signify that 10-bit 4:4:4 RGB output and 10-bit S-Log gamma—previously extra-cost options—are now standard equipment. In addition, we’ve introduced a free firmware upgrade—version 1.40, created an accessory LCD monitor hood, and launched two lenses: a PL mount zoom and an interesting FZ mount servo zoom.

The F3 attracted directors of photography through a combination of Super 35 imagery, practical workflow and accessible pricing. At the initial launch, Sony discussed a roadmap of firmware upgrades, effectively promising to make the camera even better over time. We’ve been delivering on that promise consistently.

Digital Dailies Trim The Bottom Line In Hollywood

Digital Dailies Trim The Bottom Line In Hollywood | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

Post production continues to adapt to ever-changing workflows. Digital dailies have gone from being a cutting edge technology to nearly de rigeur on the set. These prominent TV/film producers talked about how they've integrated digital dailies into their workflow and how it's improving the creative process and/or the bottom line. For post production companies, it's yet another evolution in technology that requires adaptation and accommodation.

"Digital dailies have come of age. Although not long ago, they were still in the experimental stage, digital dailies have quickly caught on. With the Alexa ARRI, the RED Epic and the Canon 5D and C300, more productions than ever are relying on digital, often tapeless workflows. Even more important, producers discovered that digital dailies routinely to create tremendous savings in time and budget, always a good idea when dealing with studios and networks.

But it's not good news for everyone. While producers are saving money by keeping dailies on the set, post production houses are losing a portion of their business: the overnight transfer and grading of dailies. Nimble post facilities now offered value-added digital dailies. As with any change in technology, the process is in flux."

Three Android Apps to Control Your DSLR Cameras

Three Android Apps to Control Your DSLR Cameras | Gear in Motion | Scoop.it

Android is like a Swiss knife. It runs on your smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, microwave ovens, cars and much more. That's not all. There are areas where Android can do what you never expected before.

The question arises; why would you want to control your DSLR with your Android device? There can be many reasons, as I identified in my case:

1. You want to extend the functionality of your camera.

2. You want to minimize physical contact with the camera while doing HDR or macro shooting.

There are quite a lot of Android apps which provide extended features and capabilities. Here are the top three apps that I like
