Christ, Piers Morgan: Janet Mock Was Never a Boy (And Neither Was I)

Christ, Piers Morgan: Janet Mock Was Never a Boy (And Neither Was I) | Gay News | Scoop.it
Piers Morgan asked Janet Mock back onto his show to explain why she and the transgender community have been so incensed by the packaging of his interview with the trans activist and author. Unfortunately, rather than listen to Mock, Morgan continued to assert that he should be free from criticism because he has "always supported the transgender community." Instead of sitting down and listening to Mock, he kept interrupting her and insisting that the terminology he used in identifying her as an individual born and raised "a boy," was not offensive.

HBO’s  Looking Gets the Parody It Deserves | Gay News | Scoop.it

Remember when Tina Fey nailed Girls with her Saturday Night Live parody of self-involved millennial angst? It was only a matter of time before Looking, HBO’s “post-gay” show about a group of fairly uninspiring men doing nothing of note in San Francisco, received a sharp-tongued roasting of its very own.

A Queer New World: Meet Drag King Goldie Peacock

A Queer New World: Meet Drag King Goldie Peacock | Gay News | Scoop.it

This is the fourteenth installment in an ongoing series that explores drag culture and the nightlife scene in Brooklyn, N.Y. Over the past several years, following the large-scale exodus of artists across the East River and into northern Brooklyn, those engaged in drag culture in this outer borough have created a new, queer world entirely their own. Accompanied by a larger movement to understand drag culture outside of the pageant circuit, many individuals engaged in the drag community in this borough approach drag culture through a nontraditional lens of "alternative" drag or performance art, enabled largely by the malleable and queer nature of this part of New York.

The Importance of Nuance, on Janet Mock and Piers Morgan

The Importance of Nuance, on Janet Mock and Piers Morgan | Gay News | Scoop.it

Last week, award winning transgender activist Janet Mock appeared on CNN’s primetime talk show Piers Morgan Live (PML) for the release of her new memoir, Redefining Realness. Though the interview itself seemed to go smoothly, Mock criticized Morgan and CNN in the aftermath, claiming they had sensationally framed her story, as evidenced by the use of an on-screen description that read, “was a boy until the age of 18” and the tweeting of Mock’s story by PML with the tagline,

"How would you feel if you found out the woman you are dating was formerly a man? @JanetMock shares her experience now. #RedefiningRealness"— Piers Morgan Live (@PiersMorganLive) February 5, 2014

She makes an interesting point, when claiming the importance of nuance in our stories,

"Nuance in media is nearly impossible but I do hope we continue to write the records of our own lives & relay that nuance #redefiningrealness"— Janet Mock (@janetmock) February 5, 2014

How does nuance, in the telling of a trans narrative, affect transgender women? And why are subtle discrepancies, such as Morgan’s poor framing amidst his intentionally positive and accepting perspective, worthy of calling out?

'Looking' Star Responds To Claims That The Show Is 'Boring' | Gay News | Scoop.it

It’s not often that an actor views a hand job in a park as “incredibly symbolic.” But in a TV series with so much riding on it in terms of queer representation, and when the actor in question is one of the few rising stars who is openly gay, an anonymous gay sex scene in a park takes on a lot of meaning.

The Global Map of Homophobia

The Global Map of Homophobia | Gay News | Scoop.it

With the help of my Martin Prosperity Institute colleague Charlotta Mellander, we looked more broadly at the connection between attitudes toward gays and lesbians and key measures of economic and social progress. To do so, we used the most recent available data (from 2012) from Gallup’s World Poll, which covers 140 plus nations (compared to the 39 covered in the Pew survey). Gallup’s survey contains a question asking whether or not the city or area in which a person lives is “a good place for gays and lesbians.” The map below, by MPI’s Zara Matheson, shows the pattern for those who answered affirmatively.

Sorry Putin, the Sochi Opening Ceremony Was Totally Gay | Gay News | Scoop.it
Putin had to put on a show with lots of lights and dancing, but quash the gay factor. Thankfully, he didn’t succeed. The anemones were way gay, and way awesome. And the presence of Putin’s rumored girlfriend and the blatant whitewashing of Russian history simply made this the Uncomfortable Olympics, where the stench of Putin's persecution just can't be quelled.

No, Being Gay Is Not a Choice

No, Being Gay Is Not a Choice | Gay News | Scoop.it

Last Wednesday, Brandon Ambrosino—continuing his swift ascent as chief homophobia apologist of the gay blogosphere—wrote a vacuous and meandering piece in the New Republic claiming that homosexuality (including his own) is a choice. Predictably, the article launched a thousand think pieces, including E.J. Graff’sexcellent retort in The Nation on Tuesday, arguing that America isn’t yet progressive enough to contemplate homosexuality as a choice.

But it’s really pointless to quibble with Ambrosino’s philosophical points, because science proved his factual assertions wrong long ago. In study after study, biologists have found that homosexuality, at least in men, is clearlyundoubtedlyinarguably aninborn trait. And although the scientific community hasn’t yet settled on a precise explanation for sexual orientation, many biologists agree that the fraternal birth order effect is likely the cause of homosexuality in 15 to 30 percent of all gay men. The physiological mechanism behind this effect, meanwhile, may soon help scientists understand the broader biological basis for homosexuality.
