Latest White House feature: Gender-neutral restroom

Latest White House feature: Gender-neutral restroom | Gay News | Scoop.it

President Barack Obama’s staff and visitors now have the option of using a gender-neutral restroom, a White House spokesman said Wednesday — the latest in a series of symbolic steps the Obama administration has taken to work the priorities of the LGBT community into its broader themes of inclusiveness and tolerance.

The newly designated restroom is an example of how the administration has been advancing the discussion by raising the profile of transgender issues, an area of debate that is especially hotly contested right now. The restroom will be located in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where much of the White House staff works.

The Gay One Direction Fan Art You Always Dreamed Of

The Gay One Direction Fan Art You Always Dreamed Of | Gay News | Scoop.it

It's been a tough week for One Direction fans. The British boy band just saw the defection of its first member, the smoldering Zayn Malik. Now rumors are percolating that Louis Tomlinson or Harry Styles — the band's informal lead singer, former Taylor Swift fling, and the one most playful about his sexuality — could be on the way out too. Before the band dissolves completely, we thought it a perfect time to highlight some incredible gay-themed One Direction fan art, found all over the Web. We're not sure what drives this phenomenon of slash fiction and fan art that is "shipping" the two. No longer is it enough to dream of winning the attention of your favorite boy bander, now fans are so open minded they just imagine them together. These adorable pieces, mostly featuring "Larry" — the pairing of Styles and Tomlinson — come via the Karukara Tumblr page.

America’s Leading Constitutional Law Scholar Explains His Support for Marriage Equality

America’s Leading Constitutional Law Scholar Explains His Support for Marriage Equality | Gay News | Scoop.it

Akhil Reed Amar’s fascinating and surprisingly personal new book The Law of the Land: A Grand Tour of Our Constitutional Republic aims to connect geography with constitutional law, explaining how certain amendments and interpretations sprouted from regional understandings of justice. The book’s finest essay explains how Kansas’ misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment allowed for Jim Crow laws—and how that segregation ultimately led to the Supreme Court’s monumental decision in Brown v. Board of Education.

Toward the end of his Brown essay, Amar briefly compares Kansas’ fight to maintain racial segregation with its current quest to keep same-sex marriage illegal. On Thursday, I spoke with Amar about this bold analogy and his belief in a constitutional right for gay couples to marry.

Does the fatwa on homosexuals in Indonesia matter? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Recently, Indonesia’s top Muslim clerical body, the Council of Indonesian Ulema (MUI) issued a fatwa (an Islamic legal edict) condemning homosexuality. This came around the time the Indonesian government carried out a flurry of executions of drug traffickers on death row, which prompted international pressure against Indonesia’s policy on the death penalty. In its edict, the MUI suggested that same-sex relations to be added to the list of crimes punishable with death.

Pollsters who measure American attitudes about controversial social issues know from experience that people don’t change their minds very often or very quickly.

Gay rights, marriage in particular, are proving to be an exception.

Freedom in fur

Freedom in fur | Gay News | Scoop.it

Sim belongs to Australia’s burgeoning furry community. It’s difficult to pin down exactly what it means to be a part of that community, but for the most part it revolves around dressing up as and having appreciation for anthropomorphic cartoon animals. Far from the image of middle-aged men dressing up like mascots to have sex, it seems that within some loose thematic boundaries, furry fandom can look like almost anything.

How being a gay man or lesbian impacts on your earning power

How being a gay man or lesbian impacts on your earning power | Gay News | Scoop.it

First, and consistent with US research on this issue, gay men in Australia earn much less than heterosexual men, while lesbian women earn much more than heterosexual women. For gay men, the size of this “penalty” is about 20%, and this does not alter much when we condition on personal and job characteristics. For lesbian women their premium is around 40% but declines to around 33% when we condition on selected characteristics.

Second, the earnings penalty for gay men is due to both a lesser likelihood of employment and a lower hourly wage. The earnings premium for lesbian women, on the other hand, is almost entirely due to the longer hours they work; it is not because lesbian women are paid more per hour.

Third, it is gay men who live with a same-sex partner who suffer the largest wage penalties. Indeed, the annual earnings of a single gay man is not any lower than that of an otherwise comparable single heterosexual man.

Fourth, there is some evidence that the wages penalties faced by gay men are partly explained by differential earnings growth. That is, that wages growth is not as rapid for gay men, suggesting possibly that they face greater barriers to promotion and career advancement than heterosexual men.

Supreme Court’s Big Gay Pandora’s Box

Supreme Court’s Big Gay Pandora’s Box | Gay News | Scoop.it

As we all know, the court is set to release its decision on same-sex marriage, probably at the end of its term in June. Virtually everyone thinks that a five-justice majority is going to uphold a federal right for same-sexers to marry. That would consist, of course, of the court’s four liberals plus Anthony Kennedy.

Okay, that’s great, if it happens. But remember: This is the same court that just said that it is okay, on the basis of religious conscience, for businesses to discriminate against gay people and refuse to photograph or cater or be-flower their wedding ceremonies. (The court actually ruled that privately held corporations could discriminate, but I guess since corporations are people, the various red-state legislatures have extended the principle to smaller enterprises.) So if the court rules for same-sex marriage this June, it will have said, in the space of exactly one year: Same-sex marriage is the law of the land, but refusing to honor same-sex marriage is the law of the land, too!

Companies are preaching to a new audience

Companies are preaching to a new audience | Gay News | Scoop.it

By stepping into the furore over Indiana’s religious freedom law, in defence of gay rights, Tim Cook is boldly taking Apple where companies have been wary about going before. But he is not the only US business leader advocating for a deeply-held personal belief — so have Marc Benioff of Salesforce.com on the same issue, and Howard Schultz of Starbucks on racial discrimination and violence.

In addition to chief executives speaking out about social matters on which they might have remained silent a few years ago, they are adopting liberal stances that often clash with political and religious conservatives. On gay marriage in particular, companies are ignoring the traditional advice that they should stick to maximising profits within what Milton Friedman, the economist, called “the rules of the game”.

Obama to Call for End to ‘Conversion’ Therapies for Gay and Transgender Youth | Gay News | Scoop.it

A 17-year-old transgender youth, Leelah Alcorn, stunned her friends and a vast Internet audience in December when she threw herself in front of a tractor-trailer after writing in an online suicide note that religious therapists had tried to convert her back to being a boy.

In response, President Obama is calling for an end to such therapies aimed at “repairing” gay, lesbian and transgender youth. His decision on the issue is the latest example of his continuing embrace of gay rights.

Lessons From One Year of Same-Sex Marriage in England and Wales

Lessons From One Year of Same-Sex Marriage in England and Wales | Gay News | Scoop.it

It’s exactly a year since the first lesbian and gay couples were married in England and Wales and almost 10 years since civil partnerships were introduced. This fundamental advance in legal recognition has been hailed as a dramatic transformation in the lives of the United Kingdom’s lesbian, gay, and bisexual people.

But what real-life impact has the right to marry or enter a civil partnership actually had on lesbian and gay couples—and why has initial take-up of same-sex marriage been so low?

Americans split over whether businesses must serve same-sex couples | Gay News | Scoop.it

A new Indiana religious freedom law has sparked national debate since Gov. Mike Pence signed it last week. While its supporters say it strengthens protection of religious liberty, critics have argued that it could provide legal cover for businesses to discriminate, such as a florist or caterer who may not want to provide services for a same-sex wedding because of religious objections.

What's the Best Way to Recycle Your Vibrator?

What's the Best Way to Recycle Your Vibrator? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Getting rid of a beloved sex toy can be a difficult process, and understandably so. For some people, it might represent the longest-lasting sexual relationship they've ever had. For others, kicking a dildo to the curb is as easy as breaking up with a flesh-and-blood partner. In either case, what to actually do with it once it's no longer of use isn't exactly clear. Do you toss it in the compost heap? Sell it on eBay? Maybe donate it to the orgasmically less fortunate? Can you recycle it?

While sex toy recycling still hasn't caught on in any meaningful large-scale sense, there are a handful of purveyors that are taking steps to address the issue for both practical business concerns and environmental considerations.

TV’s sexless gay characters: It’s time to overcome the “ick factor” and let them have some fun too!

TV’s sexless gay characters: It’s time to overcome the “ick factor” and let them have some fun too! | Gay News | Scoop.it

Squeamishness about addressing gay-related subjects is a fact of life in the entertainment industry. In its 2014 Studio Responsibility Index, an annual study of LGBT representations in the previous year’s major Hollywood films, GLAAD reported that, of 102 studio films, only 17 had gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender characters of any kind. Most of these were tangential minor roles or, worse yet, as GLAAD put it, “outright defamatory representations.” The LGBT characters “received only minutes — or even seconds — of screen time, and were often offensive portrayals.” And those fleeting depictions were also remarkably racially homogeneous: “Of the 25 different characters counted (many of whom were onscreen for no more than a few seconds), 19 were white (76%) while only 3 were Black/African American (12%), 2 were Asian/Pacific Islander (8%), and 1 was Latino (4%).”

Analysis of Australia's largest survey of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people shows that life is still difficult for many.

Based on a national survey of almost 4000 people, the report A Closer Look at Private Lives 2 reveals strong links between psychological distress and drug use among LGBT Australians.

It finds psychological distress is highest among people who have transitioned from one gender to another.

Rates of LGBT drug use are higher than in the population as a whole, and linked to experiences of discrimination.

In A First, New York Boy Scouts Hire Out Gay Man

In A First, New York Boy Scouts Hire Out Gay Man | Gay News | Scoop.it

The Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America has hired an out gay man to serve as a leader at its scout camps this summer, the first out gay adult leader known to have been approved to work with the Scouts.

Should the national leadership of the Boy Scouts of America not allow the hire to move forward, the man — Pascal Tessier — already is represented by lawyer David Boies of Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, who is prepared to challenge any rejection of Tessier’s hire.

Although the national Boy Scouts of America changed its membership policies in 2013 to allow out gay youth members, it has maintained its ban on openly gay adult members.
