Brisbane Pride Festival March and Fair Day enjoyed glorious weather on Saturday as a large crowd of LGBTIQ people and friends made their way from the Valley down Brunswick Street to Fair Day’s new location at New Farm Park. 


Colourful displays and stalls from community groups and businesses lined the park, proving that although its future seemed unsure a couple of years ago due to financial obstacles, Brisbane Pride Festival has once again fired the community’s interest and support.


The day did have one unexpected development: Pride Festival president Deeje Hancock, largely credited with guiding the festival back into the black, chose the occasion to announce his resignation.

Last week, the MacArthur Foundation revealed the recipients of its so-called “genius” awards, a $625,000 grant dispensed over five years to innovators, visionaries, and trailblazers. Of the 24 winners this year, at least three are openly gay, meaning gay people are significantly overrepresented among the genius pool. The news has ledsome to speculate that gay geniuses outnumber straight ones, proportionally, in the population at large. Are gay people really smarter than straight people?

Amidst homophobic attacks, Mister Cee resigned from his post. Several trans* activists defended Mister Cee’s sexuality, and Hot 97 program director Ebro Darden brought Mister Cee back for an interview, where Ebro encouraged Mister Cee to continue working at Hot 97. He returned and promised to seek therapy. A happy ending?

Former Greens leader Bob Brown will join Councillor Vicki Howard and community speakers at the Brisbane Pride Festival Gala Launch.

Brown will be the keynote speaker at this Friday’s event at Cloudland from 6.30pm.

Joining Bob will be community leaders Colin Micale, Jaxxon Chilli, Ricki Menzies, Donna Gaddard, Frank Croucher and Dylan Hoskins.

To officially open this year’s festival and speak on the significance of Pride will be Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard.

The theme for this year’s festival is True Colours and the Gala Launch promises a great start with entertainment by the Kate Mackie duo.
