Anti-Gay Religion Is Collapsing. Here Are the Signs.

Anti-Gay Religion Is Collapsing. Here Are the Signs. | Gay News | Scoop.it

Throughout history, religion has sanctioned and fueled the persecution of homosexuality. That dynamic may be drawing to an end. Polls, clerics, and denominations are shifting. Theology is adapting. Resistance to same-sex marriage is dwindling, and there’s no end in sight.

Why Did AIDS Ravage the U.S. More Than Any Other Developed Country?

Why Did AIDS Ravage the U.S. More Than Any Other Developed Country? | Gay News | Scoop.it

So I’m getting AIDS tested the other day in Berlin. I’m sitting in the waiting room and feeling like a Bad Gay, because I’ve lived here for three years and this is my first time getting tested. I’m surrounded by all these scared-straight brochures about HIV and AIDS in Germany. Prevalence rates, treatment options, prevention methods, names and addresses of support groups. “Since the start of the epidemic,” one of them says, “more than 27,000 people have died of AIDS in Germany.”

Wait, that sounds triumphantly low for a country of 80 million people. I pull out my phone and check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, which tells me that, in the United States, 636,000 people have died since the epidemic began. That’s 23 times higher than Germany, for a country with four times the population.

This makes no sense. Germany has big cities, it has gay men and sex workers and drug users, it has all the same temptations for them to be uncareful that the United States does. How could so many fewer people have died?

Study: Straight men cuddle with other men. A lot.

Study: Straight men cuddle with other men. A lot. | Gay News | Scoop.it

Society is more accepting of same-sex marriage. But are public attitudes on broader gender and sexual identity issues changing as well?

British researchers hypothesized that yes, gender boundaries are expanding. To prove it, they talked to 40 straight male athletes aged 18 and 19, which the study labels the typical arbiters of masculinity, to see if they've ever cuddled and spooned with another man before. The researchers figured that, if gender norms are changing, more straight men will say they're okay with cuddling and spooning with another man.

Why Would A Gay Teenager Commit Hate Crimes Against Herself? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Ten years ago, a liberal San Francisco suburb was traumatized by a rash of hate crimes against a 17-year-old lesbian. But when it was revealed that the victim herself had staged the attacks, the entire community turned on her and she never spoke about the incidents publicly. Until now.

A Challenge of Perception : Masculinity

A Challenge of Perception : Masculinity | Gay News | Scoop.it
The category of artistic nudity is taken up by a majority of women. My theory is that we, as people of a patriarchal society, are used to seeing the female body stripped down to it's rawest living form because women are seen as lesser than men, basing this off how women are represented in today's media and society.

I shot these images of Maxwell in the same style I would if I were capturing a woman's body, males are typically shot striking strong poses to show their dominance but in these images I wanted to show a male body in a more feminine light to bring us back to the fact we are all human, and we are equal, whether our society says so or not.

We as humans shouldn't have to live in a gender divided society that was created by those before us, we can change this path for the better, and I believe we can.

How Fox News Shoved Shepard Smith Back Into The Closet

How Fox News Shoved Shepard Smith Back Into The Closet | Gay News | Scoop.it

Why hasn’t Shepard Smith come out yet? The affable Fox News anchor has a longtime boyfriend, ranks among Fox’s most senior talent, and lives in New York City. It could be, of course, that he’s just a very private person, or—as the Times argued in October—that public attitudes have changed and nobody cares if a famous figure is gay.

Or it could be that, when Smith tried to come out last year, Fox silenced and punished him.

A Straight Man Walks Into a Lesbian Bar: Lessons in Gay Bar Etiquette. | Gay News | Scoop.it

Welcome to Outward’s new video feature, Ask a Homo. As we queers have sashayed our way in to the cultural mainstream over the last couple of decades, our presence has no doubt inspired a great deal of curiosity and confusion in straight folk. But fear not: Ask a Homo is here to help. If you have questions about LGBTQ politics, culture, etiquette, language, or other queer conundrums, send them our way, and a real-life homosexual will respond. And don’t worry—as long as your question is reasonably respectful, this is a safe space. A willingness to experiment a little—intellectually!—is all that’s required.

This week, June Thomas fields queries about how straight people should behave in and around gay bars.

Jennifer Lopez's curator insight, December 4, 2014 10:30 AM

It surpries me the fact that if you think about it before maybe many years ago in a country like America this, being identified and knowing your sexual prefference was a way in which you ft into the Male & Female category. n the Married status and howmuch of a deal this has caused not in thepopular culture because more and more people are being confident about their prefferences and are not afraid to come out, they want to be equaly seen and get their voice outthere. This is a perfect example of popular culture for compared to folk cutlture they wouldbe more recerved and may wouldn blive this is right. I believe its everyones choice to be here and everone likes ad dislikes many different things as well.

Over Two Million Brazilians Fought Back Against Their Government's Assault on Gay Rights

Over Two Million Brazilians Fought Back Against Their Government's Assault on Gay Rights | Gay News | Scoop.it

For 13 years, São Paulo’s pride parade has taken on serious issues in colorful style, calling for equal rights for all Brazilian citizens, secular governance and an end to homophobia.

São Paulo’s gay pride has held the record for largest parade since 2006, and this year was no different. Hundred of thousands marched in the streets Sunday, and event organizers claim there were more than 2.5 million people in attendance.

Though the march is a sight to behold, what’s more attention-grabbing is the problem LGBT Brazilians and their allies are rallying against. The theme of this year’s march: criminalizing acts of homo-, lesbo- and trans-phobia.

Blood donation rules continue to exclude healthy donors

Blood donation rules continue to exclude healthy donors | Gay News | Scoop.it

THE Red Cross needs more blood. It always does, but as winter approaches and regular donors fall ill, the need is especially high.

I’m a fit, healthy, 25-year-old man. My blood type, A Positive, is the second-most common and in constant demand. A recent blood test shows me to be healthy and clean, but the law forbids me from donating.

The reason I’m forbidden is that I’m gay.

I do all the right things to protect myself, including regular testing and safe sex with my long-term partner. But still, I’m not allowed to help those in need.

Federal health officials recommended Wednesday that hundreds of thousands of Americans at risk for AIDS take a daily pill that has been shown to prevent infection with the virus that causes it.

If broadly followed, the advice could transform AIDS prevention in the United States — from reliance on condoms, which are effective but unpopular with many men, to a regimen that relies on an antiretroviral drug.

The 13 Best Cities for LGBT 20-Somethings That Aren't New York or San Francisco

The 13 Best Cities for LGBT 20-Somethings That Aren't New York or San Francisco | Gay News | Scoop.it

LGBT best city lists are often pretty predictable: New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Berlin, Provincetown ... you know the drill. Unfortunately, lists that continue to look only to these obvious strongholds miss out on a growing number of other equally exciting and progressive locations ideal for young people in the LGBT community.

To cull our own list of slightly more under-the-radar cities for LGBT urban dwellers, we took a number of factors into consideration: legal protection, social acceptance, LGBT nightlife and economic opportunities (jobs are key). From there we created this list of overlooked cities around the world perfect for the young, queer and ambitious. Pack your bags — it's time to move.

Straight America, Do You Really Need to Socialize in Gay Bars?

Straight America, Do You Really Need to Socialize in Gay Bars? | Gay News | Scoop.it

You can go wherever you like, but should you? This isn’t a freshman social justice seminar, so I’m not going to explain the concepts of power and privilege, but let’s focus on a practical question: If you’re not a lesbian, why do you want to go to a lesbian bar? There are hundreds of taverns in New York City, where I live, approximately six of which cater to lesbians. Those dyke bars don’t have the coolest decor or the best pool table or the tastiest drinks. What they have is lesbians. Lesbians can patronize any of the city’s hundreds of not-gay drinking holes—and most of us do the bulk of our socializing in that kind of setting—but when we want to flirt, dance, and hang out with other lesbians, we go to a lesbian bar. We have six, you have more than a thousand, and believe me, yours are nicer.

The math isn’t quite so stark with men’s bars, though there are still fewer than 50 in this city of 8 million. But in towns where LGBTQ nightlife means an otherwise straight bar holding a “gay night” once a month, are you sure you can’t find another place to drink and dance that night?

Why am I so protective of these particular places? It’s not because I’m unfriendly—I love to share gay culture in just about every other situation. But even today, gay bars and clubs are among the very few places where queer people can really let down our guards. We’re at our most unprotected there, so some of us act the way cats behave around their feeding bowls and are extrasensitive to intruders. We don’t want to feel like we’re being surveilled, so if you are a straight person in a gay bar, don’t act like you’re at the zoo, watching gay people go about their mating rituals.
