Facebook Celebrates Pride, Except Where Homosexuality Is Illegal

Facebook Celebrates Pride, Except Where Homosexuality Is Illegal | Gay News | Scoop.it

Like many Silicon Valley companies, Facebook is celebrating Pride month by participating in Pride marches in more than 20 cities around the world, highlighting its support of queer employees, and offering fun features to users to express their solidarity.

Such measures are important, and can help queer Facebook employees and users of the platform to feel included and seen. One feature, a rainbow "reaction" ("like") button, allows users to express their pride, or solidarity, in response to posts. But as Sarah Kessler pointed out at Quartz, that feature was only rolled out to users in certain markets...namely, "major markets with Pride celebrations." Other users are able to opt in to the feature by liking Facebook's official LGBTQ@Facebook page.

But as it turns out, some users are unable to access the feature at all.

Queer icon the Babadook is becoming a dildo and the internet can’t handle it | Gay News | Scoop.it

THE weirdest news so far this Pride Month has been the Babadook emerging as a queer icon, after Netflix made a hilarious error when categorising the Australian horror film.

But it gets weirder. Artist Billy Raygun has recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to create a sex toy based on the monster, calling it the BabaDong.

Is Trans Over?

Is Trans Over? | Gay News | Scoop.it

I was talking last year with a woman who ran a large public company, and she was discussing her son, who she explained was nonbinary and used them/they as pronouns. I asked how long they had been transgender, and she replied, “Oh, they’s totally straight and male with a girlfriend — they just hates male/female categories and says that gender binaries are so over.”

My first response was, “Oh, my God — we’ve gone too far!” But upon reflection, I realized a profound shift was taking place, and a fundamental question was being posed.

As writer-activist Dana Beyer points out, “the ‘trans’ in transsexual was about moving from one thing to another.” One was going from male to female, or vice versa.

This concept was more or less unconsciously grafted onto transgender. It’s an overused description that “transgender” is a broad “umbrella” term for all those people who are gender-nonconforming — transsexuals, cross-dressers, drag people, stone butches, etc. And a political movement grew up to represent these people and their political interests.

Alas, this is not and never was true.

Me and my penis: 100 men reveal all

Me and my penis: 100 men reveal all | Gay News | Scoop.it

Every one of Laura Dodsworth’s penises is unique: introvert and extrovert, straight and bendy, wobblers and bobblers, growers and showers. There are contented penises that have led full lives, and disappointed penises that have let down their owners – or been let down by their owners.

In Dodsworth’s new book Manhood, every penis tells a story. There is the trans man who invested in the biggest and best; the underpowered poet hung up on his for years, until he decided to celebrate it with The Big Small Penis Party; the man who as a teenager thought he had genital warts and considered killing himself, until he found out they were normal spots; the business leader whose small penis taught him humility; the sex addict whose wife tried to cut it off; and the vicar who enjoyed his first threesome while training for the priesthood.

‘No Blacks’ Is Not a Sexual Preference. It’s Racism

‘No Blacks’ Is Not a Sexual Preference. It’s Racism | Gay News | Scoop.it

If you’re a gay man, phrases like “no blacks” and “no Asians” aren’t just words that you’d find on old signs in a civil rights museum, they are an unavoidable and current feature of your online dating experience. On gay dating apps like Grindr and Scruff, some men post blunt and often offensive disclaimers on their profiles such as “no oldies,” “no fems,” and “no fatties.” Among the most ubiquitous are racial disclaimers like “no blacks” and “no Asians,” which are most frequently posted by white men but, as Edwards’s case proves, not always.

Sometimes, men even use foods as metaphors for entire ethnic groups: “No rice” to deter Asian men, “no spice” to keep the Latinos away, and “no curry” to tell Indians they don’t have a shot.

Those who deploy these disclaimers defend themselves from accusations of “racism” by claiming that they merely have “preferences” for certain races over others.

Stop Letting Cis Drag Queens Decide What’s Transphobic

Stop Letting Cis Drag Queens Decide What’s Transphobic | Gay News | Scoop.it

While RuPaul is viewed as an icon in a large part of the LGBT community, mostly the gay community, it’s important to remember that RuPaul is wildly transphobic. The trans community have stated time and time again that RuPaul is massively problematic and harms them. With the 9th season of Drag Race just having begun, it’s obvious that cis people are still supporting him and cis people have to do better. We need to use our platforms to speak against the perpetration of violence against trans people.

Drag Race is damaging because generally cis people lump drag queens and trans women into the same category. Though there have been trans drag queens, several even coming out on Drag Race, generally drag queens are cis men, dressing up for fun. Trans women have stated that drag performers pandering to an audience of cis people can cause confusion over someone that cross dresses, and someone’s gender identity.  This is detrimental to the trans community, as people tend to believe that both experiences are the same, and it takes away the seriousness of someone’s gender identity and experience.
