Expungement of historical Queensland gay sex convictions one step closer | Gay News | Scoop.it

QUEENSLAND is on track to follow the lead set by Victoria and NSW in expunging historical gay consensual sex criminal convictions, following a meeting between LGBTI community representatives and the state government.

However, men convicted of homosexual conduct prior to its decriminalisation in Queensland in 1990 will most likely have to wait until after next year’s state election.

Michael the Brave

Michael the Brave | Gay News | Scoop.it

The first openly gay player in the NFL? When you take a good long look at the path Michael Sam took to get here—the sleepless nights in the backseat of his mother's car, the routine beat-downs from his outlaw brothers, the fact that his own father barely accepts who he is—coming out seems like the easy part.

Jason Collins announces his retirement from the NBA

Jason Collins announces his retirement from the NBA | Gay News | Scoop.it

It has been 18 exhilarating months since I came out in Sports Illustrated as the first openly gay man in one of the four major professional team sports. And it has been nine months since I signed with the Nets and became the first openly gay male athlete to appear in a game in one of those leagues. It feels wonderful to have been part of these milestones for sports and for gay rights, and to have been embraced by the public, the coaches, the players, the league and history.

On Wednesday at the Barclays Center, I plan to announce my retirement as an NBA player.

Lumbersexuals: The Triumph Of The Bears

Lumbersexuals: The Triumph Of The Bears | Gay News | Scoop.it

Bears were partly a reaction to the whole ghastly metrosexual moment when straight men, for some elusive reason, decided to shave, product and starve themselves so as to look more like women (at the behest of those Queer Eye minstrels). And exactly the same kind of hirsute transition is now – a decade later – well under way among straights.

I regard this, in the spirit of Tim Teeman, first as a huge achievement for gay male America. Not only are we more comfortable in our own unpolished masculinity, we have created a cultural space for straight men to be the same. To put it another way: gays have helped redefine masculinity for straights – and for the first time, straights have not responded by feeling in any way tainted or discomfited by the association. In the process (don’t tell anyone), the gays have craftily transformed the public space by exponentially increasing the number of men we might have a hankering or a fetish for. Win-win!

Queensland closer to expunging gay sex convictions

Queensland closer to expunging gay sex convictions | Gay News | Scoop.it

Queensland men charged and convicted under historic laws which made consensual homosexual acts illegal are one step closer to having their records expunged – but it is unlikely to occur before the next election.

Victoria and New South Wales have both moved to pardon men caught under the laws, which in Queensland were not repealed until 1990, after the Goss Labor government took power.

After originally declaring to Fairfax Media it was not a priority for the Queensland government last month, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie "clarified" the government's position and sought to meet with the president of the Brisbane Pride Festival, board member of the Queensland AIDS Council and Queensland University of Technology senior law lecturer, Peter Black.

In the Gay Wing of L.A. Men's Central Jail, It's Not Shanks and Muggings But Hand-Sewn Gowns and Tears | Gay News | Scoop.it

With rouged lips, long hair and a strut that would give Naomi Campbell pause, Dave Williams, 47, works the 75-foot runway that stretches between crowded rows of green chipped-paint bunk beds at the L.A. County Sheriff’s Men’s Central Jail.

Williams, a transgender inmate known on the inside as Yah Yah, glides past a hooting and hollering crowd of her fellow gay and transgender inmates, perched atop their beds for a prime view. She’s flaunting a white cotton halter-top baby-doll dress and matching white Cinderella gloves, hand-crafted for her by one of the trans women inside this infamously tough downtown L.A. jail.

Qld Attorney-General consults community on expunging historical gay sex convictions

Qld Attorney-General consults community on expunging historical gay sex convictions | Gay News | Scoop.it

The Queensland Government is continuing steps towards expunging historical convictions for sexual activity between males.

While NSW and Victoria have moved forward on the issue, both passing expungement laws this year, Queensland has been slow to progress – last month, a spokesperson for Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie told the Brisbane Times that amending the legislation was not a priority for the state.

However, this week Queensland MP Robert Cavallucci and Peter Black, president of Brisbane Pride Festival and senior lecturer at QUT Law School, met with Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie to discuss expunging (erasing) criminal convictions for sexual activity between males that occurred before homosexuality was decriminalised.

Though support for LGBT legal equality continues to climb, that doesn’t mean that Americans are comfortable with LGBT people in their everyday lives. What Does Intersex Mean?

What Does Intersex Mean? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Earlier this week, Taylor Lianne Chandler—a woman who claims to be Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps’ girlfriend—made headlines for coming out as intersex. This prompted hundreds of obnoxious headlines and social media posts ridiculing not only Chandler but intersex individuals generally. There is obviously a lot of confusion about what makes a person intersex. Let’s clear things up.

An intersex individual is simply someone born with sex characteristics that do not allow them to be defined as distinctly male or female. It is a totally natural, not infrequently encountered medical condition. Studies have estimated that as many as 1 in 100 children will be born with bodies that “differ from standard male or female.” It is estimated that 1 or 2 in every 1,000 intersex individuals will undergo surgery to modify genital appearance.

HIV stigma is damaging our community today…

HIV stigma is damaging our community today… | Gay News | Scoop.it
“Stigma is really damaging on both ends,” says Matthew Rodriguez of comprehensive HIV/AIDS resource site, The Body. “For negative people, stigma can sometimes stop them from getting tested. If they feel they did anything that put them at risk, they may not want to get tested because the result may be devastating. I think it also stops people from interacting with those living with HIV as full people. People just look at you as a status, as a virus. It can also stop people from going to the doctor or seeking treatment, because that’s admitting they have the virus.”

At best, HIV stigma can lead to emotional sting, lost connections and deep blows to self-esteem; at worst, it leads to life and career-threatening discrimination and dangerous, destructive behavior to others and oneself.

Bleijie to consider expunging gay sex convictions

Bleijie to consider expunging gay sex convictions | Gay News | Scoop.it

Queensland's gay community is hopeful consensual homosexual sex convictions will be expunged after a productive meeting with the Attorney-General.

The historic laws, which existed for 95 years, were repealed by the Goss government in the early 1990s but not before some 460 men were found guilty.

The law saw potential jail-time of up to 14 years, with men still being arrested as late as 1989.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie and Brisbane Central MP Robert Cavallucci last night met with the LGBTI Legal Service, who are petitioning to have historic criminal convictions pardoned.

President of Brisbane Pride and senior law lecturer at Queensland University of Technology, Peter Black, said Mr Bleijie was yesterday focused on the practicalities associated with expunging such convictions, especially the legislation passed in other states.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance | Gay News | Scoop.it

Around the world, the 20th of November each year is set aside to remember those who have died as a result of anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

It’s a day of reflection as we remember people we have lost. But it can also be a day of celebration, awareness and renewal, as our communities join together in solidarity and hope for a better future.

Thursday 20 November 2014 is the 16th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The idea began in America back in the late ‘90s following the violent unsolved murder of trans woman Rita Hester, and the day is now marked in more than 20 countries across the world, including here in Australia.

The latest figures from Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring project list 226 reported killings of trans people in the 12 months to October 2014. The update shows reports of murdered trans people in 28 countries in the last 12 months, with the majority of 113 from Brazil.

Here in Australia, a local survey by The Gender Centre in 2012 found that 51% had experienced a transphobic incident directed at themselves – either verbal abuse, physical abuse or discrimination. But only 22% had reported the incident to the authorities, as many feared their concerns would not be taken seriously, and others did not want to be ‘outed’ in a police report

Rise Up Australia party member Rosalie Crestani’s motion describes sexual orientation as a “private issue” and work with LGBTI issues as “special treatment” which goes against the Council’s obligation to “serve all residents equally.”
