What is the average penis length?

What is the average penis length? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Let’s just get this out of the way up front: 14.15 cm (or 5.57 inches). That’s the mean length of an erect penis, according to a new study. I’ll wait here while you break out the measuring tape.

Finished yet? OK, with that out of the way, we can get to the more interesting stuff (said like a true vagina-haver).

Concerns bareback porn could lead to health risks

Concerns bareback porn could lead to health risks | Gay News | Scoop.it

A LEADING safer-sex body has expressed alarm at moves by a major porn studio to begin producing films with condom-free sex scenes.

The Victorian AIDS Council (VAC) says the announcement by Lucas Entertainment, that they would now concentrate on bareback films, could have a detrimental effect on efforts to encourage safer sex.

Michael Lucas, the head of the porn powerhouse, told Queerty that porn was a fantasy and that “no one fantasies about condoms.”

While his company had originally avoided barebacking scenes, consumers were now voting with their wallets.

Let People Coming Out Choose Their Labels Themselves

Let People Coming Out Choose Their Labels Themselves | Gay News | Scoop.it

With all due respect to the power of gaydar (and its quaintness in the era of Grindr), I support Tom Daley calling himself bisexual, thencalling himself gay, and I’d support him claiming an entirely different label another four months from now, if that’s what he’s comfortable with and identifies with most. If he says he’s bi, he’s bi to me. If he’s a gay man now and forever, that’s cool, too. Labels can help some people find community or clarity, but I don’t think they should be required — of Tom Daley or of anyone. And I certainly don’t think they should be permanently fixed.

Call for Australia to approve HIV home testing kits

Call for Australia to approve HIV home testing kits | Gay News | Scoop.it

THE number of people regularly checking for HIV could increase if Australia follows the UK in legalising home test kits, say leading HIV health promotion agencies.

The ban on the kits, which allow anyone to conduct a full HIV test at home, was lifted this weekend in the UK.

The US has allowed the sale of the over-the-counter kits since 2012.

ACON chief executive Nicholas Parkhill called for the DIY kits to be made available in Australia.

Straight Porn Is Full of “Lesbians.” So Why Is Lesbian Porn So Uninspiring?

Straight Porn Is Full of “Lesbians.” So Why Is Lesbian Porn So Uninspiring? | Gay News | Scoop.it

There’s a pornography crisis in the lesbian community. All the lesbians I asked about their porn preferences agreed that the genre known as “lesbian porn,” long enjoyed by heterosexual men and widely available on a variety of websites that aggregate such content, does not depict us, nor does it serve our needs as consumers of porn. The lesbians I know have largely turned their backs on girl-on-girl action, seeking instead to scratch that most personal of itches with just about anything else. Is this an inevitable consequence of female sexual fluidity, or do we secretly yearn for a higher caliber of lesbian pornography? Spurred by intense personal curiosity about this issue, I decided to investigate further.

The 10 strangest facts about penises

The 10 strangest facts about penises | Gay News | Scoop.it

Simone de Beauvoir called it “a small person … an alter ego usually more sly … and more clever than the individual.” Leonardo da Vinci said it “has dealings with human intelligence and sometimes displays an intelligence of its own.” Sophocles said that having one was to be “chained to a madman.”

These great thinkers were referring so exasperatedly, so powerlessly, to none other than the penis. That’s a lot of hype for a body part that can “be seen as something the Creator doodled in an idle moment,” as Tom Hickman puts it in the new book, “God’s Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis.” Then again, our fascination with the penis has long belied its relatively small size (the average one is believed to be 6.2 inches long when erect). It’s fitting, then, that Hickman, a journalist, has written an expansive history of the male member covering everything from biological explanations of its shape and size to analysis of phallic myths.

It’s a well-researched, dryly witty and worthwhile read. But even a history of the penis can use some … snipping. Below, you’ll find the top 10 most surprising facts about the penis — from monkey-ball implants to broken johnsons.

Should the west be held accountable for gay persecution?

Should the west be held accountable for gay persecution? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Media coverage of gays and lesbians in 2014 has followed a very different trend to previous years. Rather than good news stories about love and weddings, the majority of reportsrelate to violence, persecution and discrimination of LGBTI people.

What is behind this apparent increase in hostilities towards gays and lesbians? The more the west recognises and protects gay rights, the more African and Asian nations seem determined to go in the opposite direction.

10 Signs You're A Clingy Boyfriend

10 Signs You're A Clingy Boyfriend | Gay News | Scoop.it

When I’m with a man I can’t help but feel attached to him in more ways than one. Some call it love, others call it clinginess, and for many gay guys it’s either one or the other. No matter how much we love our boyfriend, it seems like there’s always a limit to our affection. How long do  we have before we’re considered “too clingy”?

It’s hard to wrap our heads around the mind of a clingy person. We all have bubbles and most of us have clearly defined where it is. Anyone to trespass is likely insane or unstable, or so we think. When it comes to relationships, there’s a clear difference between crazy in love and just plain crazy. Here are a few to look out for ...

Banned Photographs Of Gay Couples Kissing In Catholic Churches

Banned Photographs Of Gay Couples Kissing In Catholic Churches | Gay News | Scoop.it
For the series “Trialogo,” the Catholic photographer Gonzalo Orquin captured images of gay couples kissing in centuries-old Italian churches; beneath the ornate ceilings, the lovers’ embrace harmonizes with the architecture, elevating gay love to the religious beauty and devotion normally associated only with heterosexual marriages. By locating each shot within a religious and cultural context that has opposed marriage equality, Orquin courageously asserts the sacred validity of same-sex love.

Explaining My Gender to a Calgary Talk Radio Station

Explaining My Gender to a Calgary Talk Radio Station | Gay News | Scoop.it
I recently ended up on a talk radio show based in my hometown of Calgary. "Is this Rae Spoon?" asked the interviewer. "Yes, it is," I replied. "And you are transgender, right?" "Yes, I am." "And we're supposed to use a different word for you?"...In over 10 years, through the hundreds of interviews I'd done with people firing questions at me about being transgender, I had always tried to avoid answering the ones that sounded like they were something off of Jerry Springer.

Australian Lesbian and Gay Life Stories, a national oral history project currently underway, seeks to explore this transformation further. The project is a collaboration between the National Library of Australia, Macquarie University and two other Australian universities, supported by funding from the Australian Research Council.

Different generations of gay and lesbian individuals will provide insight into what it has been like to live a gay or lesbian life in Australia from the 1940s to the present, when attitudes have shifted so remarkably.

The project will interview five different generations of “ordinary” gay men and lesbians providing deep insight into how individuals negotiate social change in their intimate lives. This project is the first comprehensive nationwide oral history project undertaken with a diverse range of members of Australia’s lesbian and gay population.

Clyde Rathbone: 'I'm in love with a gay man'

Clyde Rathbone: 'I'm in love with a gay man' | Gay News | Scoop.it

I'm in love with a gay man.

It's a ‘bromance’ born out of deep respect and admiration for a kindred spirit. My friend is as close to a brother as a person not born of the same mother can be. He's one of the bravest people I know. And for most of his life he carried the burden of his sexuality like an anchor around his neck.

In writing this piece I spoke with my friend (I’ll call him John) about his experience as a gay man in a professional sporting environment.

This is a small insight into his story.

AUSTRALIA’S biggest sports have indicated they will follow the AFL’s lead in banning homophobic sledges by players during games.

The codes were brought together by the organisers of global gay rugby tournament, the Bingham Cup, which will be held in Sydney this August.

These Male Sex Dolls Are Shockingly Realistic, a Little Bit Creepy

These Male Sex Dolls Are Shockingly Realistic, a Little Bit Creepy | Gay News | Scoop.it

You ever have that feeling when looking at a really life-like doll that the thing looks like it should have a soul but it doesn't and that makes you feel like a million feet are walking over your grave? Well, get ready to have that feeling even worse with these very real-looking male sex dolls.

For some reason Reddit is having a great time with a rather NSFW collection of pictures of male sex dolls, mostly from manufacturer Sinthetics (whose website appears to be down). These guys are so real you might want to trade your partner in for one of these. Speaking of trading, they come with interchangeable flaccid and erect penises (yes, also very life-like) and both cut and uncut models depending on how, um, European you like your men.

According to Reddit, these will run you about $7600 but it might be worth it if you want an absolutely flawless set of washboard abs lying next to you in bed every night. If you want to rock out with one of these guy's cocks out, by all means feel free, but they are still a little bit strange.

Love flew high at Brisbane Queer Film Festival

Love flew high at Brisbane Queer Film Festival | Gay News | Scoop.it

THE biggest Brisbane Queer Film Festival yet wrapped up its nine-day celebration of the silver screen last weekend, going off with a drag-inspired bang.

Entering its 15th year, BQFF organisers had plans to go above and beyond previous years and see that Brisbane, Australia and the world took notice of a festival that has in the past lived in the shadow of its interstate counterparts.

Using the 2014 festival’s core mantra of “Let Love Fly”, organisers were determined to offer visitors a variety of Australian queer film festival-firsts along with events, screenings and guest speakers exclusive to Brisbane.

This year’s festival also featured an extensive line-up of Australian content and the local films proved to be a major draw card.

Mozillagate Proves Gay Rights Are No Longer Up for Debate

Mozillagate Proves Gay Rights Are No Longer Up for Debate | Gay News | Scoop.it

Last week, a man who had briefly been a CEO suddenly became not a CEO. Depending on who you ask, the man became not a CEO because he resigned for the good of his company or because he was forced out by overzealous thought police. At the same time, we have been told, another sudden change occurred: The virtuousness of gay rights—or more specifically, marriage equality—transformed from a topic of debate on which reasonable, good-willed people might disagree into a new “orthodoxy,” a moral standard from which public dissent could get you run, if not all the way out of town, certainly out of the C-suite.

Mike Arrington Says OkCupid's 'Hypocritical' CEO Uses 'Explicitly Evil' PR Stunts

Mike Arrington Says OkCupid's 'Hypocritical' CEO Uses 'Explicitly Evil' PR Stunts | Gay News | Scoop.it

Last week, dating service OkCupid urged people to stop using Mozilla’s Firefox browser following Mozilla’s appointment of Brendan Eich as its CEO.

That’s because Eich opposed gay marriage back in 2008 by donating $US1,000 in support of Proposition 8, a California referendum to ban gay marriage in that state.

Eich has since resigned, but investor and Techcrunch founder Mike Arrington believes that OkCupid’s stated intentions — to protest the Mozilla CEO’s anti-gay marriage views — are “hypocritical.”

“I believe that it was a PR stunt by OkCupid, that the company isn’t really committed to gay rights at all, and that OkCupid co-founder Sam Yagan was particularly hypocritical in this,”Arrington writes on Uncrunched.

According to federal election records, Yagan donated $US500 in 2004 to U.S. Congressman Chris Cannon who has a “special kind of hate for gays,” Arrington writes. Cannon received a 0% rating on supporting gay rights from the Human Rights Campaign. He also voted for a ban on gay adoptions, and supported a constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman, Arrington writes.

“Is it absurd to judge Yagan as a person based on a single donation, years ago, to a politician well known for waging war on gays?” Arrington says on his blog. “Yup. But that is precisely what Yagan and OkCupid did to Eich.”

“To go further, I think that a person and/or a company who deliberately destroy a man’s reputation and career under false pretenses just to get a PR bump is being explicitly evil,” Arrington says.

The Quality Of Mercy

The Quality Of Mercy | Gay News | Scoop.it

A civil rights movement without toleration is not a civil rights movement; it is a cultural campaign to expunge and destroy its opponents. A moral movement without mercy is not moral; it is, when push comes to shove, cruel.

For a decade and half, we have fought the battle for equal dignity for gay people with sincerity, openness, toleration and reason. It appears increasingly as if we will have to fight and fight again to prevent this precious and highly successful legacy from being hijacked by a righteous, absolutely certain, and often hateful mob. We are better than this. And we must not give in to it.

Pete's insight:

I have to agree with Andrew Sullivan on this issue.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms Coming to Columbia University

Gender Neutral Bathrooms Coming to Columbia University | Gay News | Scoop.it

Columbia University is adding single-person, gender neutral bathrooms to three of its dormitories in an effort to make transgender students more comfortable (via The Columbia Spectator). Plans are in place to add similar bathrooms to other buildings around campus. This news comes on the heels of University President Lee Bollinger announcing he plans to make the campus a safer place for the trans community. (In 2012, the university also expanded their student healthcare plan to cover gender-transition-related expenses.)

Even as these changes are being made, GendeRevolution (the on-campus trans advocacy group) believes that more are necessary. The bathrooms are a step in the right direction, they say, but there is no trans specific housing for first year students, and the school makes it hard to use an alternate name without a legal name change. GendeRevolution hopes to rid the campus of transphobia altogether.
