Dear Corporate America, leave our LGBTQ Pride celebrations alone

Dear Corporate America, leave our LGBTQ Pride celebrations alone | Gay News | Scoop.it

Listen up, "prideful" corporations. Pack up your branded rainbow swag and leave my community alone.

The LGBTQ community has put up with your "rainbow-washing" during Pride Month for far too long. And in the Trump era, when LGBTQ rights are under alarming attack, we need you to step off our movement.

We need to reclaim Pride and its resistance roots — for ourselves and for each other. And Corporate America's role in that should be to lift us up, and then move out of the way.

Facebook Celebrates Pride, Except Where Homosexuality Is Illegal

Facebook Celebrates Pride, Except Where Homosexuality Is Illegal | Gay News | Scoop.it

Like many Silicon Valley companies, Facebook is celebrating Pride month by participating in Pride marches in more than 20 cities around the world, highlighting its support of queer employees, and offering fun features to users to express their solidarity.

Such measures are important, and can help queer Facebook employees and users of the platform to feel included and seen. One feature, a rainbow "reaction" ("like") button, allows users to express their pride, or solidarity, in response to posts. But as Sarah Kessler pointed out at Quartz, that feature was only rolled out to users in certain markets...namely, "major markets with Pride celebrations." Other users are able to opt in to the feature by liking Facebook's official LGBTQ@Facebook page.

But as it turns out, some users are unable to access the feature at all.

Gay Pride Marchers Carrying Star of David Flags Kicked Out of Chicago Parade

Gay Pride Marchers Carrying Star of David Flags Kicked Out of Chicago Parade | Gay News | Scoop.it

Three people carrying Jewish Pride flags were asked to leave the Chicago Dyke March on Saturday in part because they “repeatedly expressed support for Zionism,” according to the organizers. One member of the Dyke March collective said those carrying the rainbow flag with a Star of David in the middle were told to leave because the flags “made people feel unsafe,” adding that the march was “anti-Zionist” an “pro-Palestinian,” according to the Windy City Times. American flags also were reportedly not welcome at the event, although it isn’t clear whether anyone was kicked out for having one. Flags from other nations appears to have been allowed.

LGBTQ Pride Is a Celebration of Visibility. But What Does That Mean in 2017?

LGBTQ Pride Is a Celebration of Visibility. But What Does That Mean in 2017? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Ask a room full of queers what Pride means—what the season is for—and you’re certain to get a few different answers. For some, it’s a time to commemorate the movement-energizing Stonewall rebellion of 1969 and to take stock of how far LGBTQ people have come on our road to legal and social equality in the 48 years since. Others, such as those staging protests at Pride parades around the country this summer, see it as an opportunity to take up the riotous spirit of our queer ancestors and demand better of our own leaders and our government, with a social justice platform that comprises far more than queer issues alone. And still others view it as a kind of carnival, a time to party with their queer siblings and revel in a season when we march down the main avenues of the culture rather than keeping to our typical sidelines.

At the heart of all these approaches to Pride is a single theme: visibility. Pride is our time to be seen. And with good reason: Since the earliest public homophile demonstrations—and growing exponentially with the ever-larger parades and rallies that proliferated following Stonewall—a single, elegant idea came to dominate thinking about queer liberation: LGBTQ people need to be seen to be respected.

This Transgender Australian Took Her Fight To The United Nations, And Won

This Transgender Australian Took Her Fight To The United Nations, And Won | Gay News | Scoop.it

The woman behind a landmark United Nations committee decision decrying Australia's laws around marriage and gender transition says the current law is "a joke" and the decision should prompt the government to legislate marriage equality.

BuzzFeed News revealed this week that the United Nations Human Rights Committee ruled that Australian laws requiring married transgender people to divorce before they can change the sex on their birth certificate are in violation of international human rights law.

In a decision made on March 17 and published on June 15, the committee found in favour of a married transgender woman from New South Wales, identified only as G, who had tried unsuccessfully on multiple occasions to change the sex on her birth certificate.

It is a significant ruling for Australia, where laws with this effect exist in six of the eight states and territories.

‘No Blacks’ Is Not a Sexual Preference. It’s Racism

‘No Blacks’ Is Not a Sexual Preference. It’s Racism | Gay News | Scoop.it

If you’re a gay man, phrases like “no blacks” and “no Asians” aren’t just words that you’d find on old signs in a civil rights museum, they are an unavoidable and current feature of your online dating experience. On gay dating apps like Grindr and Scruff, some men post blunt and often offensive disclaimers on their profiles such as “no oldies,” “no fems,” and “no fatties.” Among the most ubiquitous are racial disclaimers like “no blacks” and “no Asians,” which are most frequently posted by white men but, as Edwards’s case proves, not always.

Sometimes, men even use foods as metaphors for entire ethnic groups: “No rice” to deter Asian men, “no spice” to keep the Latinos away, and “no curry” to tell Indians they don’t have a shot.

Those who deploy these disclaimers defend themselves from accusations of “racism” by claiming that they merely have “preferences” for certain races over others.
