Why are so many lesbians invisible within LGBT community?

Why are so many lesbians invisible within LGBT community? | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
Many of you know that I love, love, love Twitter! One of the many great things about Twitter is the conversation and dialogue that you can have with pretty much anyone around the world. It's pretty amazing to think about. I post all of my blog posts to Twitter in hopes to spark conversation about what I've written about. It really helps me be informed on what other people's views are on the subject and how I can be more inclusive in what I write. Just last month I started Tweeting with the creator of the documentary "Girls on Girls." This documentary looks amazing and will hopefully be funded soon (Kick Starter link here). The premise of the film is the invisibility of feminine lesbians within the LGBT community. When I watched the trailer (see here) and Tweeted with the creator and a few other supporters of it, I had the "Holy sh*t, why haven't I written about this yet?!" moment. I'm pleased to say that I will be interviewing the creator on an upcoming podcast so stay tuned for that.

Violence Against LGBT People Is Unabating, Even in San Francisco

Violence Against LGBT People Is Unabating, Even in San Francisco | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
On August 11 an individual shouting homophobic slurs attacked our building, the San Francisco LGBT Center, with a metal pipe, shattering two windows and a glass door. The person was quickly apprehended, and the incident is currently being investigated as a hate crime.

The attack left me and many staffers in shock. I was angry and also sad. It was a stark reminder that even in San Francisco, homophobia and violence continue to be pervasive in the LGBTQ community.

What happened that day reminded me of the importance of the center’s work and why we must continue to do it, especially around violence prevention.

Why don't you have a picture of your wife on your desk? | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
So my wife is a special education teacher for a public school system. Just recently while on her lunch break she was sharing our wedding photo album with a co-worker/friend of hers. A student came in with a question for her and as the student walked over, she closed the wedding album and addressed the students request. Another teacher within range said "What's the big deal if they catch a glimpse of it? And why don't you have a picture of your wife on your desk? You have one of the kids..."

What exactly is an LGBT chamber of commerce?

What exactly is an LGBT chamber of commerce? | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
In day to day interactions with people I’ve come to find that many do not know what a chamber of commerce is or what a chamber of commerce does. I’m noticing that I may just live in a bubble where I make assumptions that everyone just knows what a chamber of commerce is because I am so active in them. If you do not know you are certainly not alone and I’m here to explain.

What do the Great Depression and LGBT equality have in common?

What do the Great Depression and LGBT equality have in common? | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
In many past blog posts the concept of generational differences within the LGBT community have come up. I’ve never delved deeper into it for a lack of a good way to compare and contrast the generations. In a post I wrote about the term Queer, the generational difference came up. If you talk with younger LGBT folks (30 and under), they often use the word queer a term of empowerment. It is something that they embrace. In conversations with older folks of the LGBT community (60 and up) the word queer was something that was used against them in a derogatory way. I talk about the nuances within the LGBT community and this is a really good example. Using a term like queer as part of your blanket marketing efforts may or may not work depending on who your target market is.

Twinks, Bears, and U-Hauls: TV Has Some Strange Ideas About “Gay Culture.”

Twinks, Bears, and U-Hauls: TV Has Some Strange Ideas About “Gay Culture.” | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it

In the last few years, television has gotten better at including LGBTQ characters, but its representation of gay culture is still rather limited. While some shows—like Difficult People, Happy Endings, and The Fosters—reveal an understanding of the way queer people live now, others seem content to repeat outdated stereotypes and to obsess about gay men’s sexual types and lesbians’ use of U-Haul as a verb.

This video looks at what television talks about when it talks about “gay culture,” all the way from Melissa Etheridge to Cher and from twinks to bears.

Small-town pride: LGBT stigma fades as civil rights are won

Small-town pride: LGBT stigma fades as civil rights are won | Gay Business & Marketing | Scoop.it
Pride events have been held annually in the nation's capital since 1975, but change has come much more slowly in smaller communities. Advocates say that only now, after federal court victories legalizing same-sex marriage and affirming other LGBT civil rights, have lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people been able to live openly without fear of discrimination in many small towns.

The proof can be seen in pride festivals and LGBT resource centers popping up across rural America.

There were 252 pride festivals in the United States in 2015, up from 179 in 2014, said Sue Doster, a co-president of InterPride, which tracks and promotes the events.

CenterLink, a network of LGBT resource centers offering everything from legal aid to youth activities, now reaches across 40 states, with a membership that has nearly quadrupled to 170 in the past decade, said Chief Executive Officer Terry Stone.
