I call this a digital shift backward to the days of reading packets and teacher lecture. One exception: students can participate in question/topic discussions modeled on social media. Classics provided, but is this the best way to read them? Good maybe for test prep - even then, the provided materials in Gobstopper do not begin to approach the rigor of new testing (older testing, yes). Teachers can clutter up a text in both apps in multiple ways and both apps make the teachers "tracking of reading through how many questions were answered" very easy. It could kill a nascent love of reading great literature.

Though it is a pay for app my favorite browser iDevice browser is iCab because of its integration with so many other apps and services built in.

Education Technology: Apps in the Middle School Classroom

Education Technology: Apps in the Middle School Classroom | Gator Tech | Scoop.it

Karin has three kids, two in middle school. Like most people who live with or teach kids this age, she knows that what’s in now will be passé in a day, and that few kids want to admit that school can be cool. So when her daughter came home from a friend’s house chattering about life in Jamestown in colonial days, Karin was eager to know what sparked this enthusiasm. Perhaps she should have guessed: It was an iPad app. Karin looked up the Early Jamestown history app in the App Store (it’s free), and she found other interactive history apps there as well. Maybe one of them will also interest her kids."
