Flood risk warning on paved gardens
Richard Spencer's insight:

Why its  important to  have  a  front  garden

I  totally  go  along  with  this  article . That was  brought  up  last  year  on  the  Great British Garden  Revival .  Stressing  that  its  important  to  have  a  piece  of  ground  where  the  water  can  drain  freely  with  out  causing  run off  and  eventually  flooding

Also  If  you  want  to  sell  your  house   having  a  massive  parking  bay  outside  your  front  door  to  me  any  way  will  cause  your  property  to  drop  in  sales  due  to  the  lack  of  "  curb  Appeal  "

But  as  we  tend  to  take  this  all  for  granted  we are  in fact  our  worst  enemy  as  we  path  or  concrete  our  front  gardens  to  accommodate  our  vehicles as  the  space  for  parking  diminishes

Richard Spencer's insight:

Most  popular  trend  of  a  few  years  back  as  this isn't  new   isn't  going  down  well  with  other  gardeners   I  recall   who  like  my  self  tend  to  like  the  stripe  and  clean  surfaces   of  box  mowers.

The  only  advantage  I  can  see  is  that  it  feeds   the  grass   by  cutting  grass  shoots  and  spreading  them  evenly  rather  like  a  flymo   thus  making  the  trip  to  local  dump

However  for  it  to  be  effective  the  grass  tip  have  to  be  short   for  it  rot  down  quickly  in  the  soil  otherwise  they  just  make  a  thatch  will  have  to  raked  out

Richard Spencer's curator insight, March 5, 1:54 PM

Should  we  move  to  mulching  mowing?

My  thought  are  still  divided  on this  subject  as  it  was  in  December  last  year. But  it  seems  to  me  a  growing  trend. When  and  if  you  decide  to  use  these  mowers  the  rule  for  any  grass  cutting  applies  use  a  box  for  the  the  fist  three  cuts  in  the  season  and  eventually  move  the  blades  down  to  one  third  of  the  grass  height  ~ then  add  the  mulcher  attachment  on  the  machine  with  out  the  box.

The  reason  behind  the  box  is  by  early  spring  the  grass  will  be  long  if  it  hasn't  been  cut   in  winter so  the  box  catches  the  long  grass  that  wouldn.t  rot  down  quickly

Richard Spencer's insight:

My  two  favorite  SM  platforms

From My  experience  I  find  both  Linkedin  and  twitter  a  very  useful  tool  in  the  social  media

And  tend  to use  these  both  definitely  for  example  you  can  join  a groups  that  have  the  same  ideas  in  your  niche

you  can  also  swap  ideas  around  or  bounce  ideas  of  other  people  (  Linkedin tends  to  be  for  professional people  but  don't  let  that  put  you  off)

Twitter  I  use  for  advertising  and  general  chat -  you  can  also  find  what    jobs  or  new  clients  by   doing  searches.

what  is  your  favorite  platform

Richard Spencer's insight:

3 good  reason Why  you  need  to  out  side  ;-

There is  still  plenty  to  do  till the  winter  snow  comes  in.

(1)  Planting  &  Removing

Unwanted  plants  can  removed easily  since  the  heavy  rain  we  are  getting.

(2)  Pruning

Cornuses .fruit  trees  deciduous  trees  and  even  Acers  can  be  pruned  this  time  of  year .as  well  as  roses

(3) Weeding  can  also  be  carried  out  ounce  the  bed  is  clear  apply  a  1"  layer  of  bark  chips  around  the bed  to  prevent  weeds  coming  through  -  with  the  rain   the  chips  will  get  inoculated  and  biodegrade  through  the  out  the  year  releasing  mircobes  into  the  soil

clear  and  burn  all  dead diseased  and  dying  matter

And  finally  keep  off  the  grass  as  much  as  possible

How to look after your lawn in winter

How to look after your lawn in winter | Gardening | Scoop.it
How to look after your lawn in winter; the garden never completely hibernates; things still need seeing to.
Richard Spencer's insight:

Should we cut our grass in winter?

I have  been  cutting  grass  now  for   everyone  including   the  public  sector  for over  25  yrs.

And  this  is  the  first  time  I  have  heard  about  this and  its  all  new  to  me.

I  generally  leave  the  grass now  for  spring  now  and  let  the  grass  recovery.  cause  about  this  time  of  yr  you  shouldn't  really  cut  it  cause  of  the  reasons  :-

(a)  Over  here  esp  in  the  UK  the  grass  tends  to  too  wet  now  and  efforts  of  cutting  the  grass  will  fruitless -  the  grass  will  either  rip  or  just  be  squashed  flat  by  the  roller

(b) After  the  heavy  rain  and  dew  fall the  heavy  soils  will  be  water  logged  and  just  cake  up  your  mower  esp  now  when  the  nights  are  getting  shorter  the  grass  will  still  be  wet

(c)  With  our  heavy  soils  ( ie  Clay  ) any  walking  on  the  grass  will  only  compact  the  layers  and impede  the  drainage &  finally I  was  told contrary  to  what  this  article  said  is  that  grass  stops  growing when  the  temperature  drops  bellow 50 degrees
