Much Ado About Mulch

Much Ado About Mulch | Gardening | Scoop.it
Summer is well and truly over (if we can call it a summer this year?!) and the leaves are starting to fall as autumn brings the wind, rain and even frost. Fallen leaves can pose a hazard in the garden; they can be a haven for pests and disease, as well as becoming dangerously slippery…
Richard Spencer's insight:
I refer to go over the leaves with a lawn mower especially if they are dry to shreds them up as it saves a lot of time from (A) Unclogging your vacuum every time it gets stuck (B) Also very time consuming having to empty it every time the bag gets full Shredding with a mower makes good sense and any left over will be taken into the soil by grateful worms and insects. So you will  be  helping the wildlife However , I like to elaborate in part as there is some confusion over the types of compost Grass Cutting /Green compost taken from Spring to late Autumn rely on two things (1) Heat (2) carbon IE stalks hay etc for the bacteria to do their work And  there  is  one  What I call Black Gold / Leaf Mulch Decayed leaves left in well ventilated and wet receptacle like a wire mesh netting and scatted for a year or  two Only needs a different as it broken down not by bacteria but soil organism ,fungi and earth insects which need moistness and aeration much  more than anything else

controlling lily leaf beetles, with u. of rhode island's lisa tewksbury - A Way To Garden | Gardening | Scoop.it
I GET A LOT OF QUESTIONS about insect pests, but not just familiar opponents like cucumber beetles or squash bugs and Japanese beetles. In recent years, I get more and more questions from a widening region about a very beautiful but very naughty pest called the lily leaf beetle.
Richard Spencer's insight:
Here  is  an  interesting  article  on  the  recent  research  on  the  pest  of  all  our  lilies.
The  Red  Lilly  beetle , looks  like  there  is  hope  in  the  far  future  of  controlling   these  by  introducing  other  insects  that  might  eat  them.
Mean  while  as  I  said  in  my  Blog  here  https://spencerrichard01.wordpress.com/2013/07/04/red-lilly-beetle/ ;
It  just  good  hygiene  methods  and  to  make  sure  the  beetle  doesn't  hibernate  in  the  soil  or  conceal  it  self  by  putting  down  a  white  sheet  of  paper  at  the  bottom  of  the  plant  as  you  knock  them  off

The best way to edge a lawn #Landscaping - 101 Gardening

Richard Spencer's insight:
Here  is  a very  simple  way  to  edge  a  lawn  if  you  are  short  funds.
Its  not  the  best  way  for  this  reason
(1)  Basically you  going  to  deep  into  it   use  a  Half  moon  or  edging  iron  that  goes  to  the  right  depth  and  is  sharp  and  thus  gets  edges  nice  and  sharp.

For  edging  use  the  an  inverted  hoe  and  flick  the  dirt on to  the  bed.
There  are  two  golden  rules  when  edging  a  bed  to  remember  (1)  In  Summer  time  best  to  keep  it  flat  and  in  the  saucer  shape  to  retain  water
(2)  in  Spring  and  Autumn  when  you  want  it  to  drain  away  you  make  it  into  small  heap
It  will  look  unsightly   but  your  plants  will  benefit  from  it

Choosing between sod, seed or hydroseed

Choosing between sod, seed or hydroseed | Gardening | Scoop.it
When renovating or installing new turf, choosing whether to sod, seed or hydroseed is a case-by-case decision. Below, we break down a few considerations, but the most important one should always be what’s best for the lawn, experts say. “Whenever we’re making a recommendation we give (the client) what fixes the lawn the best because the last thing you want to do is have a customer aggravated for a number of years,” says Chad Diller, a certified turfgrass professional and the marketing coordinator at Tomlinson Bomberger Lawn Care, Landscape & Pest Control in Lancaster, Pa. “We would rather make the right recommendation, knowing we might not get the job, than give them a half measure.”
