This gardening app has a human touch | Garden apps for mobile devices | Scoop.it

Developed by Scot Nelson, a plant pathologist at the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Rescources (UH-CTAHR), The Plant Doctor is an interactive smartphone app that helps users accurately identify and manage plant pests and diseases.

It’s not the first app that can help pinpoint plant diseases, but it is unique in that you get the diagnosis from a living person, not to mention an expert on the subject. And it’s free

A 60x microscope in your pocket

A 60x microscope in your pocket | Garden apps for mobile devices | Scoop.it

Researchers have developed a process that can turn an ordinary smartphone into a microscope with 60x magnification. By baking droplets of transparent silicone in a special oven, these cost-effective and high-quality lenses -- worthy of a microscope costing $500 or more -- can be attached to smartphone cameras and turn them into microscopes. The lenses could be used in schools for education purposes, for medical examination of skin diseases, or in farming to identify pests in crops.

Win the "screen vs nature" battle...with an app

Win the "screen vs nature" battle...with an app | Garden apps for mobile devices | Scoop.it

The app, compatible with iOS devices, is free. And rather than being a typical game that takes your child’s mind captive in a virtual world, this is an “augmented reality” app — in other words it encourages kids to connect with their real world surroundings. It’s geared toward fairly young kids, but is clever in its use of the device’s built-in camera to connect real and virtual elements which ultimately drive kids imaginations toward the planet around them.

Open Source Seed Initiative: "Free the Seed!"

Open Source Seed Initiative: "Free the Seed!" | Garden apps for mobile devices | Scoop.it

From The Daily Page: Farmers have traditionally gathered and saved seeds from one growing season to plant in the next. But this age-old tradition is being threatened by corporations that are increasingly restricting access to seeds through patents.

A new group with ties to the University of Wisconsin-Madison is trying to counter this trend by ensuring that certain seed lines are never patented and remain accessible to individuals who want to plant or use them to produce new varieties. Following the lead of supporters of open-source software, the Open Source Seed Initiative hopes to promote an ethic of sharing among plant breeders.
