Four Ways to Move from ‘School World’ to ‘Real World’

Four Ways to Move from ‘School World’ to ‘Real World’ | Gamification of VET | Scoop.it
Knowledge has become increasingly abundant, giving educators the opportunity to make the school world look more like the real world.
Peter Shanks's insight:

With an abundance mindset, we can create click-through spaces in our schools and in our curriculum. We can empower students to direct their own learning and to take full advantage of the unlimited courses and access they already have outside of school. By shifting from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance, we can move from school world to real world.

Beyond Grades: Do Games Have a Future As Assessment Tools?

Beyond Grades: Do Games Have a Future As Assessment Tools? | Gamification of VET | Scoop.it
Research looking at how games could be used to assess the process of learning is pushing test makers to question what's important to test and how to most fairly evaluate students.
Peter Shanks's insight:

Psychometrics has something to bring to the table,” Kamenetz said. But at the same time, game-based learning is challenging the psychometric field to move into the 21st century. The data analytics available to educators now are changing the landscape for psychometricians, who need to evolve a new set of tools to measure the principles important to the discipline — reliability, generalizability, comparability and validity — within a new context.

Top 4 Peer to Peer Learning Tools for College Students

Top 4 Peer to Peer Learning Tools for College Students | Gamification of VET | Scoop.it
If you're looking to take a step into peer to peer learning tools that help you, the student, succeed - here are the top 4 that are available to you.
Peter Shanks's insight:

Who can teach you better than your peers? Nobody! Seriously. Most educators are so far removed from your understanding that it’s difficult for them to think back when they didn’t know how to do the basics – like addition, or understanding osmosis. But somebody who’s just learned the process? Somebody who started on your level, and now understands the topics can easily reach down (metaphorically of course), grab your hand, and pull you up to their level.

Peter Shanks's insight:

We believe that learning technology offers the possibility for creating uniquely valuable learning experiences.

We also believe, with a sense of sadness and profound frustration, that most elearning fails to live up to its promise.

We further believe that current trends evoke a future of only negligible improvement in elearning design—unless something radical is done to bend the curve.

Finally, we have concluded that in order to elevate elearning to the height of its promise, we need to begin with a personal commitment to a new set of standards.

A Caring Professor May Be Key in How a Graduate Thrives

A Caring Professor May Be Key in How a Graduate Thrives | Gamification of VET | Scoop.it
The Gallup-Purdue Index seeks to measure graduates’ well-being and the college experiences that shape them. Its first report suggests that human factors matter most.
Peter Shanks's insight:

College graduates, whether they went to a hoity-toity private college or a midtier public, had double the chances of being engaged in their work and were three times as likely to be thriving in their well-being if they connected with a professor on the campus who stimulated them, cared about them, and encouraged their hopes and dreams. - See more at: http://m.chronicle.com/article/A-Caring-Professor-May-Be-Key/146409/#sthash.E8bzAZPa.dpuf

How Games Lead Kids to the Good Stuff: Understanding Context

How Games Lead Kids to the Good Stuff: Understanding Context | Gamification of VET | Scoop.it
With game-based learning students learn how to solve the problems in context. They understand how the equations they are solving fit into the world. The question, “Why do I need to know this?” is rendered obsolete. It is more than just subject matter, more than just content. There’s context. Students understand how integer partitions work within a system.
Peter Shanks's insight:

For those who prioritize learning that can be measured using only quantitative assessments, game-based learning probably just looks like a way to increase student engagement and content retention. It might seem like a complex workbook, or an entertaining quiz. Perhaps game-based learning looks like a great tool for practice and drilling, like a super sophisticated flash-card system that makes memorization more fun. But this kind of thinking doesn’t take into account the broader understanding of what matters. Game-based learning is a great classroom tool because it allows for interdisciplinary learning through contextualized critical thinking and problem solving.

4 Stages Of Curiosity & 20 Indicators That Reveal Them
Peter Shanks's insight:

Where curiosity comes from isn’t entirely clear.

That’s probably because there is no single source for it any more than there is a single source for entertainment, anxiety, or confidence. There are strategies to promote curiosity in the classroom—even those that consider how the brain works. Ideally, teaching and learning wouldn’t benefit from having curiosity “added in,” but rather would fail completely without it.
