Quote "Media companies are using a long list of platforms to engage readers/viewers in the lives of their characters. Authors are doing the same—doing live performances, making book trailers, and creating iPhone apps and Facebook pages for the characters in their novels. But how you use transmedia storytelling to get your story out there?"

Sharrock's comment, October 18, 2013 7:17 AM
from the article: "Amazon’s Whispernet falls under the transmedia storytelling umbrella. Buy a Kindle e-book and then subscribe to Audible to download the audio book. Read a few pages and then hop in your car, where the Audible app on your iPhone will pick up where you left off and read the story to you." This is such a cool innovation!

Augmented Calendars - Engage Their Minds

Augmented Calendars - Engage Their Minds | Gamification of Learning | Scoop.it
I made a “Mystery Calendar” for October.  I found a list of historical people and events from October here, and chose 4 of them.  Then, I used iMovie to create short videos that gave clues about each one.  Because I have a Mac at home, I had a bit of trouble finding a good calendar template for the iWorks suite, but I finally landed on a good template for Numbers here.

Augmented Reality board games not mature yet, but this is looks promising: Darkling Plain: Kickstarter

This fantasy board game comes alive when your pieces transform into 3D heroes and beasts battling on a magical, living landscape.

Gary Hayes's curator insight, July 3, 2013 12:30 AM

Quote "

There are no actual miniatures in Darkling Plain. You place cards that represent your units and other features, like a ring of standing stones or a village, upon a full-color game board. When the cards or board are viewed through the camera of a smart device or computer, the game comes to life like a video game. Spectacular special effects abound as a fantasy battle bursting with the magical and the medieval consumes your tabletop.

Importantly, the AR component of the game is not simply window-dressing. We are treating augmented reality as an important tool in the play of the game. It communicates vital visual clues to players, such as a unit’s readiness. It also allows features like truly invisible movement, real-time play, and airborne forces that are actually above the playing surface."

Digital Storytelling 101

Digital Storytelling 101 | Gamification of Learning | Scoop.it
How to leverage technology and storytelling to create learning that sticks.
Be Learning's insight:

Let’s face it. In this evolving learning space, we are all trying to do the same thing. We are trying to connect with our learners, give our participants an immersive experience to entertain them, teach them, and entice the change ‘ninja’ in them. We are trying to ensure information retention and facilitate a consistent transfer of knowledge.

Technology and storytelling together help us do all of that—and more. And as learning technology evolves, so will the way we tell stories.

How Big Data Analytics and Gamers Could Solve Fraud and Security

How Big Data Analytics and Gamers Could Solve Fraud and Security | Gamification of Learning | Scoop.it
Businesses can draw key lessons on solving fraud and security problems by observing gamers and combining big data analytics.
Be Learning's insight:

Gamification has drawn much inspiration from games and gamers in tackling real world problems. Just to name a few, video game titles such as World of Warcraftand Simcity are revolutionizing lesson plans, Portal 2 was used as a talent recruitment tool and a puzzle game helped to unlock parts of the AIDS protein structure. These developments have allowed significant progress in their respective fields. Yet, how do we tackle the burning issues of security and fraud in an enterprise scenario? While it may seem daunting at first glance, we could once again draw key lessons by literally observing gamers and combining big data analytics!

Be Learning's insight:

In recent years there has been a huge drive to harness the power of digital gaming in learning. It is a huge subject with games taking many forms and delivered in many ways, from the PC to the mobile, the gameboy to the Kinnect. They have been applied to aid the development of subject knowledge, subject specific skills to learning collaborative skills such as problem solving and team work. In many cases we are already using ‘gaming’ in learning, whether it be board games, quizzes or like one of our recent customer service programs where the facilitator led day was designed as a game with the integration of gaming principles.

We can be so creative and insprational now in how we provide learning to our children.  My son experiences the joys of Transmedia Storytelling when interacting with Ninjago, whether it be the cartoon, the games or his own world of Ninjago Lego.

It is hard as a parent to navigate between the whole 'Play Screen Time' v's 'Learning Screen Time' guidelines...especially when my son is also reading and writing words well above his offical 'grade' at school as he wants to create his own world in MineCraft, which means he needs to follow instructions and name his creations.

Actually, the insights in this article also takes me back to my early 20's when I was working with young men with learning difficulties and through the provision of computers they were motivated to read and write so they could search the 'world wide web' (what they were searching for was another matter!).

As Jennifer asks, If an app/game can inspire a child to read and become a lifelong reader, shouldn't we find ways to embrace the technology rather than condemn it?

See what you think!

McKee believes that executives can engage listeners on a whole new level if they toss their PowerPoint slides and learn to tell good stories instead.

In his best-selling book Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting, published in 1997 by Harper-Collins, McKee argues that stories...

Loving A Digital Learning Life

Be Learning’s US based Director Miriam Tassone and Sydney’s own Dimity MacDiarmid travelled all the way to Dallas, Texas to share our knowledge of the industry with many other great names in the learning industry during ASTD 2013.

One of our favourite topics is of course “Loving a Digital Learning Life”, so you can imagine how thrilled we were to share our own experiences! In the digital economy, why is storytelling so powerful for learning? What are the key components of storytelling? Miriam and Dimity provided all the answers. They showed how to translate this into the digital landscape and invited the crowd to imagine the application of digital storytelling in their own workplace. The positive reactions and feedback we received were overwhelming and very inspiring. Here's the presentation.. Be Learning's insight:

For organisations to stay relevant beyond today they must create innovative learning that will engage and attract a changing workforce who are increasingly driven by technology and dominated by social media and mobile devices. What was relevant even five years ago is no longer impactful in today’s digital world.

Stacey Edmonds, our Head of Film & Digital was invited to deliver a workshop at the Trainers Meet Trainers conference in Kuala Lumpur - to explore how a story driven experience delivered across multiple platforms can provide learning professionals with an edge to not only create a memorable experience for learners but also deliver long lasting impactful change for organisations that will ultimately effect bottom line results.

The programme titled 'Loving a Digital Learning Life - How to leverage technology and storytelling to create innovative learning– that sticks’ cut through the complexity of digital learning and allowed participants to experience firsthand how to design and deliver digital story driven learning.

This session which she delivered along with Deepti Sachdeva, our Digital Producer/Social Media Manager created huge excitement amongst the learning and development professionals in who were looking for new and innovative techniques to engage learners using mobile, digital and interactive technologies. Here are a few snippets from the workshop...
