Most US homes stream content through games consoles

Most US homes stream content through games consoles | games | Scoop.it

Parks Associates research shows that 46 per cent of US broadband households have a game console connected to the Internet and over one-quarter (28 per cent) use the connected gaming console as their primary connected CE device.

Enoal Le Roc'h's insight:

Among these primary console users, roughly three-quarters use the gaming console to access non-gaming content online at least weekly, and nearly 40 per cent access such content for more than 10 hours per week.

“Gaming consoles are the most frequently used connected CE device because of their high adoption rates-of the broadband households that have only one connected CE device, nearly 60 per cent have a game console,” said Barbara Kraus, Director of Research, Parks Associates. “As the non-gaming capabilities of consoles have expanded, so too has the potential for consoles to become an entertainment platform for online content such as video, music, and apps.”

Two-thirds of US broadband households currently have at least one connected CE device. Smart TVs trail gaming consoles as the second most commonly used connected CE device. Twelve per cent of US broadband households with an Internet-connected CE use a streaming media player most frequently, and only 9 per cent use a connected Blu-ray player most frequently, according to Parks Associates’ Q1 2014 survey of 10,000 US broadband households.

“Smart TVs are popular, but households typically make these purchases when they need to upgrade their flat-panel TVs, which will spread out adoption to coincide with the TV replacement cycle,” Kraus said. “Blu-ray players are performing poorly as a connected CE platform, whereas many gaming consoles have already staked a claim in the living room, which helps to drive non-gaming uses for the platform.”

Kraus added that households with multiple connected CE devices are less likely to use the console as their primary connected CE device.

“The ability to play console-quality games remains the core adoption driver,” Kraus said. “However, our research shows that younger console owners and those with children in the home are heavier users of online, non-gaming content. While 62 per cent of all broadband households have a gaming console, more than 80 per cent of households with children in the home have the device.”

Could Microsoft upgrade the Xbox One’s hardware to fix the PS4 performance gap? | ExtremeTech

Could Microsoft upgrade the Xbox One’s hardware to fix the PS4 performance gap? | ExtremeTech | games | Scoop.it
As you are well aware, there is a sizable gap between the hardware specifications of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But who says this will always be the case? It's not unusual for a console to be tweaked or upgraded multiple times throughout its lifetime as new (cheaper) hardware becomes available. Because both consoles use fairly standard PC hardware, could Sony or Microsoft upgrade their consoles to close (or widen) the current performance gap?
Enoal Le Roc'h's insight:

If you change the hardware of a game console just a tiny bit, all of those hard-coded optimizations suddenly break. If your game leverages some quirk in the ESRAM of the Xbox One, and the Microsoft goes and fixes (breaks) that quirk, then suddenly your game stops working. Likewise, if the developer hand-tweaks the number of polygons on-screen at any one time to ensure the console’s GPU can stick to 60 fps, then upgrading the GPU isn’t likely to do much of anything. Even worse, if any developers do decide to target the new version of the console with upgraded hardware, then consumers with the old version of the console won’t be able to play the game.

4 Reasons Video Games Are Good For Your Health (According To American Psychological Association)

4 Reasons Video Games Are Good For Your Health (According To American Psychological Association) | games | Scoop.it

A new paper in American Psychologist, the flagship journal of the American Psychological Association, looks at the positive effects of video game play.

Enoal Le Roc'h's insight:

In controlled tests, folks who played first person shooters showed “faster and more accurate attention allocation, higher spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities.” Apparently, the improvement in spatial skills that gamers develop are comparable to those developed in formal courses designed to teach the same skills.

Video games help kids to develop an incremental theory of intelligence. “Immediate and concrete feedback in video games (e.g., through points, coins, dead ends in puzzles) serves to reward continual effort,” keeping players in a “motivational ‘sweet spot’” that “balances optimal levels of challenge and frustration with sufficient experiences of success and accomplishment.”

In a broader way, by creating realistic enough simulations that elicit strong emotional responses (both positive and negative), commercial games provide players with an opportunity to try and regulate their emotions. Players feel that “the accomplishment of goals matters” and also know that because they’re controlling the Mario avatar with the Wii U controller, rather than throwing real fireballs, the space is “safe enough to practice controlling, or modulating, negative emotions in service of” the game’s goals.

Adaptive regulation strategies such as acceptance, problem solving, and reappraisal have repeatedly been linked to less negative affect, more social support, and lower levels of depressive symptoms.

According to the authors, playing games leads to prosocial “helping” behaviors. Two recent studies have shown that playing games leads to cooperative behaviors outside of the gaming context. Apparently, “even the most violent video games on the market (Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty) fail to diminish subsequent prosocial behavior.

The Greatest Generation

The Greatest Generation | games | Scoop.it
GamesIndustry International looks back on the past eight years as a golden age of gaming
Enoal Le Roc'h's insight:

The current generation of consoles started in the holiday season of 2005, with the launch of the Xbox 360. With apologies to the Wii U, the next generation will begin this holiday season when the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 arrive. The intervening years have been some of the most eventful in gaming history, changing and challenging our definitions as to what games are, who plays them, who makes them, and how. Whether or not these developments actually happened within the console space (and many of them did not), their impact has not been limited to one platform, or any corner of the industry specifically.

We may disagree about what we want out of games, what games should be, and what trends may be good or bad. Regardless of what our positions are on those subjects, we should be able to look back on this generation as a golden age of gaming.
