I finally got to play Papers, Please after it went on sale a few days ago. It's tought for me, as I'm not one to just let people die. The genius of it is really how after you get used to it, you just mindlessly approve or reject notices and start not caring about the reactions. And then it occurs to you after a while that you've engaged with the game so much that you emulate the emotions of someone in the characters position.

Lights and art design is an overlooked part of gaming narrative design. Think about how different a player feels in a noir setting and a futuristic setting. Contrast is a great example of how art design affects the narrative and the mechanics.
