Mike Mackay's insight:

My design college has just bought a couple of Cubify's 'Cube' 3D printers for about AUD1,700.00 each http://cubify.com/. We've have had a fair number of 3Distasters, as I call them, but these often lead to insights and ideas we wouldn't have otherwise seen.

Cubes are ideal for checking the basics before you send your design off to someone like Shapeways http://www.shapeways.com/ to have it printed in the material of your choice where mistakes are far more costly.

I've seen first-hand the remarkable learning experiences that even very basic 3D printers enable. The expression on students' faces when they first see one in action is priceless and powerful; you can watch their minds opening as they start to wonder at the possibilities of what they're seeing.
