Le Silla - HOW IT'S MADE 2013

Le Silla luxury fashion footwear production is currently mainly handcrafted. Some manufacturing processes are assisted by specialized machinery but most production is still handmade, being especially true in the case of high added value Le Silla shoes production.
Le Silla Shoes are produced with a complex manufacturing process, for each model it is necessary to employ the last (the rough form of a human foot used in shoemaking to provide the fit and style of a shoe ) and assembly a list of components (sole, heel, sock, strap, inner parts, etc.), to cut the inner and outside parts, to stitch inner and outside parts.
The assembly process is very laborious (up to 25 different operations) and especially complex in fitting operations due to the non uniformity and the different elasticity of the natural leather as well as the non-rigid nature of the components that difficult their manipulation. The experience make the difference expecially for the confort. The Confort is the high inner value of a pair of shoes. You can not determinate the confort with a visual inspection so remind this saving money. Each pair of shoes requires a final inspection, small spots or colour differences in the leather, correct alignment of pieces over the last, etc.. The packaging, at the end, requires the introduction in the shoe of a piece silk paper and the final introduction into the box with additional pieces of paper sheets.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Lovely video on the hand making of shoes by craftsmen!

The New Artisanal Approach to Menswear 'Couture'

The New Artisanal Approach to Menswear 'Couture' | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

“In one place we do the leather component, in another we do the cutting, in another we assemble those two products, in another we do a hand finish, and in another we do some of the technical finishes on the fabrics—so it’s a long process. When you see these products, you understand that there’s a soul behind [them].

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Couture and these new age terms suggesting couture are all based on the fundamental principles of crafting life in pieces that are otherwise common or without imagination.

How 'Luxury' Is Luxury Fashion?

How 'Luxury' Is Luxury Fashion? | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

By commercializing luxury, brands end up forgoing quality and design for cheaper production quotas. In a bid to lower production costs, some luxury brands even assemble the entire bag except for the handles in countries like China. The bag is then shipped to Italy to have the Italian-made handle attached, followed by the leather embossing of the “Made in Italy” stamp.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

This is never a question with Gabriella Wimmer Jewelry-Handbags. They are always handcrafted in Italy beginning to end - from leather and diamond selection to leather cutting and metal turning to stitching and inspection. www.GabriellaWimmer.com This is true luxury, true couture.

History: Dior's Russia Couture 1959

History: Dior's Russia Couture 1959 | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

Of all the designers to pierce the Iron Curtain during the 1950s, Saint Laurent’s Dior paired most harmoniously with Soviet reality. After all, the newly refashioned “New Look,” with its functionalist philosophy, embodied the socialist-realist trope that form should follow function, that art should accommodate reality, and that the masses—rather than the elites—should determine what it meant to be “cultured.”

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

It is always beautiful t see fashion respected as art and how some of the "important" names evolved through time. Sometimes we tend to forget how world events can affect the fashion we see in the day and how couture pieces that seem over the top can also be more subdued.

Luxury Has A New Address - Literally

Luxury Has A New Address - Literally | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

As many consumers are quite programed to enter a .com behind their favorite brand, Kirchner believes there is a lot of potential for .luxury to co-exist quite nicely with .com.

"A .luxury web address also enables brands that offer products to different segments of the market and target their messaging to the right audience," Kirchner commented.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

This is an interesting idea - let's see how it fairs because once it is open to the public, there is the same issue of watering down "luxury" again - the cache is gone.

At least 1,800 batik collections from the kingdoms of Cirebon, Sumenep, Yogyakarta and Solo are on display at the Tugu Hotel in East Java, allowing visitors to learn about the countless batik motifs Indonesia has to offer, including rare designs and those reserved for royalty and special occasions.

“These are batik unique to the Sultanate of Cirebon; they are part of a private collection from the palace,” said Anita Yudi, the hotel’s marketing manager.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Batik in Indonesia can be quite fine, detailed and beautiful, blending tropical colors with mythology in an almost effortless fashion. Large, intricately detailed batik pieces are ornate and worth hanging on a wall as a focal point.

KNOW LUXURY: Basic Differences in Crocodilian Leathers by GABRIELLA | WIMMER

When looking at a finished product made from exotic reptile leather such as alligator, crocodile, and caiman, it may be hard to distinguish differences in the leathers.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

A great way to get a basic understanding of the differences in crocodilian leathers with visuals. The more visually pleasing the leather, the pricier the skin; hence, alligator and crocodile command high prices while caiman does not.

Edible Fireworks And Other Outlandish Delights

Edible Fireworks And Other Outlandish Delights | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

Fireworks are inherently visual and music has accompanied them for centuries. But the other senses—the senses Bompas & Parr tend to exploit—have mostly been ignored when it comes to pyrotechnics. Bompas & Parr wanted to create the sensation of tasting and smelling fireworks—without actually eating them.

The studio worked with pyrotechnic experts and flavor scientists to build tools that could broadcast the flavors to the massive crowd. More than a quarter million people inhaled strawberry smoke, ate peach-flavored snow, popped orange bubbles and were covered in banana confetti.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Though not a traditional luxury, events that captivate and unify more senses can bring about new experiences, which is the desire and essence of luxury to push boundaries.

'Anyone With Money Can Be A Fashionista'

'Anyone With Money Can Be A Fashionista' | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

By going mass market, luxury has capitulated to the unyielding pressure of becoming more accepting of everyone, regardless of whether or not they understand what luxury really means.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Very intriguing and direct! The author is overly critical on the direction of luxury in today's terms, the production process, and the easy access that luxury goods have become. She is especially hard on the idea that people with money can become fashionistas since it more a display of wealth than of fashion. As well, her ultimate idea of luxury is not have a piece that has been reinterpreted by lower brands, but is still unique and special in its own right - timeless and enduring and emotional.

To Snub Or Not To Snub, What's The Right Balance?

To Snub Or Not To Snub, What's The Right Balance? | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

The meaner and more snobby a salesperson is to you, in a luxury retail setting, does that make you want to buy more?

Well, according to  a team of Canadian and American researchers for the Journal of Consumer Research from the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business, the answer they discovered to be true was a "yes".

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

This is a double edged sword - a store needs to have the experienced staff to know and feel what is the right level of "snubbery" for this to work. This behavior may also be a big contributor driving potential clients to the online shopping environment.

Emerging Markets Drive Growth For Luxury - 2013

Emerging Markets Drive Growth For Luxury - 2013 | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

Luxury industry growth in 2013 came from the emerging markets of China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, where continued urbanisation, economic development and the overall love of luxury have continued to bring a large proportion of consumers into the mainstream luxury market.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

Though luxury is not defined here in this article (though it may be assumed mass luxury), it is optimistic and supports the trend that many major labels have been pursuing - Asian markets. As well, it touches upon men who also are coming into their own right for luxury goods (or rather designers are spending more time pursuing the metrosexual male).

Diamond Funds? A New Way To Invest In Diamonds

Diamond Funds? A New Way To Invest In Diamonds | Gabriella Wimmer Luxe | Scoop.it

Gold has always been the ultimate investment and a currency used by civilizations for more than 6,000 years. However, as the value of the shiny metal plunges 30 percent, it is becoming increasingly apparent that gold may soon be losing its luster. Investors are now turning toward another precious metal: the diamond.

Gabriella Wimmer's insight:

We've known about lab-created diamonds for some time; we've known about industrial uses of diamonds due to its physical properties; we've known about diamonds for their aesthetic qualities. What is really interesting is that they may start to be traded. I wonder how that will trickle down to consumer prices...
