Frost & Sullivan: RFID Systems ‘Indispensable’ to Manufacturing

Frost & Sullivan: RFID Systems ‘Indispensable’ to Manufacturing | Futuristic Technologies | Scoop.it

The business model and structure of the manufacturing industry has grown well beyond the scope of a single enterprise and location, making radio frequency identification systems indispensable to its functioning, according to a new study from Frost & Sullivan.

With increasing adoption of lean manufacturing strategies pushing most manufacturers to focus on and outsource niche operations within global supply chains, RFID technology will help sustain high levels of performance, the firm says.

The study, “Analysis of the Global RFID in Manufacturing Market,” finds that the market earned revenues of $1.29 billion in 2013 and estimates this will nearly quadruple to $4.99 billion in 2020. The study covers passive, active and battery-assisted passive RFID.

RFID technologies are designed to enhance supply chain visibility and control of inventory, operations and logistics across diverse manufacturing points. The systems facilitate real-time tracking of assets in different locations, which can increase productivity and enable cost-effective allocation of resources.

These potential benefits, along with reduced labor requirements, increased accuracy of information and improved customer service, boost RFID adoption among manufacturers looking to realize higher return on investment, the report says.

“Opportunities for RFID solution providers exist across all application segments within the manufacturing industry,” Nandini Bhattacharya, Frost & Sullivan measurement and instrumentation senior research analyst, said in a statement. “Growth prospects in the automotive and aerospace manufacturing sectors are especially promising, owing to supportive industry regulations."

25 Reasons To Love Drones

25 Reasons To Love Drones | Futuristic Technologies | Scoop.it

We know what you’re thinking: love drones? Those ominous, free-floating, sometimes unseen killers that have walked our nation out onto some perilously thin ice, geopolitically and ethically? Even the word itself is loaded. No one can agree on what a drone is, exactly, or whether they should be referred to as drones at all. Turns out we don’t just think about drones. We have feelings about drones.

But yes, there is plenty to love beyond the headlines about the Middle East. Once the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) establishes airspace rules, which is likely to happen next year, the drone industry could fuel a decade-long, $82-billion economic boom, according to a study done by the industry’s leading trade group. Already, one analyst estimates the global market for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at $250 million to $300 million. The truth is, we’re witnessing a Kitty Hawk moment—the start of an era in which drones will change the world and the way we live in it. They’ve saved lives overseas; at home, they will make our cities and grids smarter, keep people safer, and help save our planet. And, as you’ll see on these pages, they can be fun, too.

LG Display Zeroing in on 3D UHD TV Market

LG Display Zeroing in on 3D UHD TV Market | Futuristic Technologies | Scoop.it

LG Display Co. proclaimed this year as the new “first year of 3D,” as it heralds a new era of Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.

The TV giant vows to lead the global 3D market this year by focusing on China.

Ever since the first 3D TV rolled out in 2011, the company has enjoyed its status as a forerunner in 3D-related technology, but it hasn’t been able to capitalize on it owing to the stagnancy of the 3D TV market.

The company is aiming at reigniting 3D boom by using the popularity of UHD TV.

Goodbye world, hello personal isolation pod - CNET

Goodbye world, hello personal isolation pod - CNET | Futuristic Technologies | Scoop.it
Time out! This futuristic-looking isolation chamber is perfect for things like chilling out and boozing up. Just the thing to get some quality alone time.

Hankering for some serious downtime? Feeling antisocial? Need to get away from the fam? This space-agey white seclusion booth might be just the thing you're looking for.

Made in Japan, the self-sequestering box is called the "Cozy Room" and its manufacturers describe it as a "relaxation room for man and woman." (Separately, mind you, this thing is not big enough for more than one person at a time.)

Relax you will. While you'll be all alone in this futuristic booth, there's no need to be lonely.

"The Phanton Menace," again?CozyRoom

This intimate pod is packed with everything you need to hide out and be entertained for a good long while. Hang up your TV or computer monitor and sit right back in your padded chair, because you've got some serious binge-watching and/or gaming marathons ahead of you.

In addition to the unit's drawers, shelves, and other storage spaces, a special rack has been included so you can admire your Gundam figurine collection. Of course, it has a desktop, which as the promo image shows, has an appropriately named bottle of alcohol, Virgin Bourbon, placed on top of it.

It does not, however, have plumbing, air conditioning, or a refrigerator, and it's definitely not self-cleaning. Plan accordingly.

It's sort of a personal pod of decadence and shame. Amusingly, Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft is calling it the "Forever Alone Pod."

For a mere 798,000 yen (roughly $8,000), you too can shut out the rest of the world. Preorders are being taken now.

Remember, what happens in the "Cozy Room," stays in the "Cozy Room." Or at least we hope so.

Normally when you drop a drinking glass on the floor it shatters. But, in future, thanks to a technique developed in McGill’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, when the same thing happens the glass is likely to simply bend and become slightly deformed. That’s because Prof. François Barthelat and his team have successfully taken inspiration from the mechanics of natural structures like seashells in order to significantly increase the toughness of glass.

“Mollusk shells are made up of about 95 per cent chalk, which is very brittle in its pure form,” says Barthelat. “But nacre, or mother-of-pearl, which coats the inner shells, is made up of microscopic tablets that are a bit like miniature Lego building blocks, is known to be extremely strong and tough, which is why people have been studying its structure for the past twenty years.”

Previous attempts to recreate the structures of nacre have proved to be challenging, according to Barthelat. “Imagine trying to build a Lego wall with microscopic building blocks. It’s not the easiest thing in the world.” Instead, what he and his team chose to do was to study the internal ‘weak’ boundaries or edges to be found in natural materials like nacre and then use lasers to engrave networks of 3D micro-cracks in glass slides in order to create similar weak boundaries. The results were dramatic.
