Virtual ‘mirror’ of world to help predict future - Steven Bishop in The Sunday Times | FuturICT In the News | Scoop.it

A BRITISH-LED scientific project is poised to win £800m backing from the European Union.

University College London (UCL) is co-ordinating a group of institutions that is seeking to develop a computer model of the world’s population, economy and society.

Creating a virtual “mirror” of the world would allow scientists, governments and others to obtain unparalleled insights into the way society responds to certain events and under certain circumstances.

For example, the impact of natural disasters or the introduction of new laws could be assessed in the virtual world, providing data about the effect on society and the economy. The response to contagious diseases could also be tried and assessed in the virtual world.
