Miljard euro voor onderzoek naar beheersbaarheid crises | Folia Web | FuturICT In the News | Scoop.it

European Commission : CORDIS : Newsroom : Transport solutions for the future of the economy and environment

European Commission : CORDIS : Newsroom : Transport solutions for the future of the economy and environment | FuturICT In the News | Scoop.it
Traffic congestion is a serious problem. According to a recent study conducted by INRIX Europe, Belgium is the worst country in Europe for congestion, with motorists spending 55 hours a year in traffic jams, followed by Holland (50 hours) and Italy (29 hours). It is estimated that by 2050 the world's roads could see 4 billion vehicles: four times today's figure.

How to tackle the problem of traffic congestion was recently discussed at the Intelligent Transport Systems World Conference in Vienna, which was organised by the European Commission. One topic was how to avoid a global gridlock (in response to the news of a traffic jam in China, which lasted 11 days).

Research in social management of data, the “oil of the 21st century”

Research in social management of data, the “oil of the 21st century” | FuturICT In the News | Scoop.it

Institute IMDEA Networks is among the 7 participants of the Spanish node (FuturICT Spain) within the FuturICT consortium.

The Institute will provide its extensive experience on content distribution, network architectures, protocols, communications, green ICT and internet economics, among other fields, as well as skills specific to tackle this project, such as trace and data gathering from social and peer-to-peer-networks, mobile networks and sensor networks.

Amongst the key people involved in the research and coordination activities of the FuturICT project, Marco Ajmone Marsan- Full Professor at the Electronics and Telecommunications Department and Chief Researcher at IMDEA Networks- will act as ‘leader’ of the WorkPackage 6.6 on ‘Smart Energy Systems’, where IMDEA Networks will be concentrating its activities.

Antonio Fernández Anta, Senior Research at IMDEA Networks, shall coordinate the IMDEA team. Within the overall FuturICT aim to accelerate the scientific cycle that goes from data generation to prediction, the Institute’s research activities will focus on smart energy systems.

They will look at future scenarios, devise solutions for future energy networks and energy-efficient ICT (using existing and newly developed tools) and generate insight, understanding and knowledge about the societal, economic, technological and environmental uses of this research, most particularly how its findings may be used in decision making, policy formulation, forecast and crisis management scenarios.

FuturICT is in perfect alignment with Europe’s Vision 2020 with its strong focus on innovation and socio-economic-environmental as well as health challenges. Big Data and Open Data are the “oil of the 21st century” and as Europe is scarce of natural resources, it must build on ideas so the ability to refine them can become Europe’s newest resource. Innovations in this area will offer new opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses, for self-employment and stimulate an age of creativity leading to economic, social and cultural prosperity.

Over the next few weeks the EC will seek review of the six final proposals with a view to funding two FET Flagship projects starting in 2013.

VACANCY: NOVEL THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO GEOPHYSICAL FLUID DYNAMICS

VACANCY: NOVEL THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO GEOPHYSICAL FLUID DYNAMICS Posted on Behalf of Universität Hamburg, KlimaCampus

"Climate change is a key challenge for both, science and society. The Cluster of Excellence „Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction“ (CliSAP) is responding to this challenge in an integrated way, linking together natural and social sciences. Main partners are the University of Hamburg, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and the German Climate Computing Centre DKRZ. CliSAP has initiated the “KlimaCampus Hamburg”, an alliance of research institutions covering a wide range of expertise on integrated climate system science in Hamburg, thus offering excellent conditions for research and education.

The Cluster of Excellence invites applications for a

Research Associate/Postdoc m/f (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)

The successful applicant will carry out activities in the context of the CLISAP2 project within the group of Theoretical Meteorology and his/her research will be focused on the development of new methods in statistical mechanics/dynamical systems for the investigation of geophysical fluid flows, with the vision of the Earth as a complex system featuring multiscale properties and irreversible processes.

Interdisciplinary research abilities are greatly appreciated.
The successful applicant will have a strong background in one or more of the following areas:
• Climate Tipping Points;
• Dynamical Systems: Lyapunov exponents and covariant vectors;
• Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics;
• Extreme Events and Large deviation theory;
• Stochastic Dynamical Systems and Stochastic parametrizations;
• Adjoint Methods.

The objective of the research group in Theoretical Meterological is to develop new lines of interdisciplinary resaerch across geosciences, physics, astronomy, and mathematics for attaining a new level of understanding of geophysical and planetary systems and developing new approaches for studying general non-equilibrium systems.

Responsibilities
The applicant will carry out collaborative and independent research within the group of Theoretical Meteorology. Activities to start up or reinforce research contacts within the research group and within the
Clisap2 project will be supported. The set up of new research links with other research and academic institutions in Germany and abroad and the preparation of re-search proposals will be greatly appreciated. The applicant will also contribute to the organization of scientific events.
Specific tasks include presenting research at international conferences, publishing results in peer reviewed research journals and advising and supporting junior team members in their research. If the candidate wishes to undertake some teaching activities, this will be supported.

Requirements
We expect a doctoral degree in mathematics, physics, meteorology, oceanography, geosciences or a related subject and the following skills:
• Proven research abilities in one or more of the following areas • Climate Tipping Points; • Dynamical Systems: Lyapunov exponents and covariant vectors; • Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics; • Extreme Events and Large deviation theory; • Stochastic Dynamical Systems and Stochastic parametrizations; • Adjoint Methods.
Demonstrated experience in developing interdisciplinary research Demonstrated knowledge and skills in presenting an publishing research results Proficiency in programming scientific numerical simulations Ability to conduct independent work. Ability to perform collaborative research.
