Two software companies that sell course-management systems, Blackboard and Instructure, have entered the race to provide free online courses for the masses.

On Thursday both companies plan to announce partnerships with universities that will use their software to teach massive open online courses, or MOOC’s. The companies hope to pull in their own college clients to compete with online-education players like Udacity and Coursera.

DENVER — MOOCs are on the tip of everyone’s tongue here at the annual Educause meeting, presumably because of their scale and the technologies their recent champions have built to support that scale.
But in his opening keynote, Clay Shirky, an author and assistant professor at New York University, said the most provocative aspect of MOOCs is not their massiveness; it is their openness.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is offering free online education courses in partnership with some of the world’s top universities, such as Stanford and Princeton, from next year. The courses are being offered through Coursera, an educational technology company that first began offering free, online education to a dozen Stanford engineering classes in 2008.

Distance Education Pioneer Pursues North American Marketplace with Free Course Offerings.

 

Armidale, Australia – November 1, 2012 – The University of New England (UNE) in Australia, a leader in online learning and distance education, announced that it will begin researching and pursuing North American partnerships for the deployment of free courses and highly scalable MOOCs. To accelerate the effort, UNE will send representatives to Educause 2012 in Denver, Colorado next week to conduct discussions with interested organizations.


UNE has already developed three significant offerings:

Open pathways programs for underserved and struggling students,Free courses designed to attract students to degree and certificate programs,Low cost MOOCs that remove barriers for students to pursue a master’s degree.
