Have you ever thought of yourself as the sum of your actions? What about the sum of years you’ve been alive, the number of hairs on your head, or how many times a day you brush your teeth? Think about the text messages you send each day, the places you check in on Foursquare, your Google search history, or your Facebook wall posts.

 

Our lives can be broken down into endless categories of quantifiable data. With these tiny, incremental details, what could an outside observer piece together to learn about the big picture that is your life?

 

By studying crowdsourced data on a large scale, participants will be able to observe significant trends within the data collected as well as determine what different sets mean in relation to each other. Gathering information is one thing, but analyzing it and deciding what to do with it is another. The latter is perhaps the most exciting part and leaves plenty of room for creativity.

 

The vast amount of data that we’re able to collect in real-time by satellites, mobile phones, RFID tags, GPS-enabled cameras, and computers from around the world allow us, Chapin posits, “to sense, measure, understand and affect aspects of our existence in ways our ancestors could never have imagined in their wildest dreams.”

The North Face is all about fun stunts in Korea, where it regularly gives shoppers unexpected surprises—and films them for videos that, as often as not, go viral.

The most famous one was in 2014, when the brand created a pop-up store whose floor disappeared, forcing the startled shoppers to have to engage in some athletic activity by climbing the walls. Another stunt had shoppers try out a VR experience that turned out to be way more real than they expected.

Now, agency Innored is back with its latest caper.

The Washington Post now publishes around 1,200 posts a day. That is an incredible amount of content. My initial reaction when I read the statistic was ‘surely that is too much, the quality will suffer, why produce so much content?’ The answer seems to be that it works. The Post’s web visitors have grown 28% over the last year and they passed the New York Times for a few months at the end of 2015..


There appear to be a number of factors including: 


Data – Bezos employed a group of data scientists to analyze the content that gains traction 


Technology – The Post developed software called Bandito that allows editors to publish articles with up to five different headlines, photos and story treatments, with an algorithm deciding which one readers find the most engaging. 


Headlines – Using data and technology the Post has developed more viral headlines, which is arguably different from clickbait if there is substance to the content 


Video – The Post has increased its use of video 


Content growth – The Post has adopted a content strategy which involves producing a high volume of content aimed at engaging a long tail of niche interests

The article argues Quantity over Quality; however, also mentions publications using robot algorithms to write stories that need only require a little human editing. Interesting piece.

As you can see from the image, the factors Facebook uses to assess each individual post are: 

Who posted it – How often the user engages with content from this user/Page. 

Type of content – How often the user engages with this type of content – e.g. photos, videos, links. 

Interactions with the post – The amount of interactions a post has had infers a relative level of importance/relevance of the post. 

When it was posted – Recency is an important ranking factor, as people want to be kept up to date with the latest news – though Mosseri notes, it’s not the most important factor. 

At the end of this assessment, Facebook assigns each story with a “Relevancy Score” which is specific to each user and based on their respective predicted levels of interest in each post.
Steve Law's insight:
While people click stories based on headlines and subject matter, the FB algorithm only considers average engagement levels from type of content. Therefore, a highly curated page in line with the interests of fans is preferred to simply posting a firehose of content.

Having multiple admins per page helps keep posts consistent in the absence of a page’s creator. At Cats on Cocaine, there are four total admins, all in different time zones. This way, if David gets blocked, we “adminions” (as he so lovingly likes to call us) can go on sharing cat humor to our fans while he is essentially forced to sit in a Facebook-induced timeout.

The Explorer’s job is to collect the raw material for creativity. He is constantly asking questions, talking to different people, and processing as many inputs as possible. 


The Artist takes the raw material from the Explorer and combines it in new and interesting ways. He’s playful and imaginative with no concerns about judging the quality of what he’s creating. 


The Judge takes the Artist’s ideas and determines if they’re practical. He thinks critically and realistically about what can actually be done. 


Finally, the Warrior takes an idea the Judge has determined worthy and tenaciously follows it to completion. The Warrior’s job is to overcome resistance, be courageous, and ship the idea.

An interesting look at Facebook News Feed Algorithm (Feb 2015)

Notes:


- Each piece of content is given a relevance score based on criteria (relationship, type of post, activity on post) and then is ordered with the best content at the top.
- Once the content is displayed to the user, the rankings are locked for that content (editing text after the fact will not change this)
- Facebook now lets users mark posts as "a false news story". Using that information, Facebook can either remove this content or show it farther down in the rankings.
- Likes and shares on Page posts are given more weight than comments.
- When a user hides an individual post or all posts from a page, this can affect the likelihood of not only that user but other users seeing Page posts for some time.
