3ders.org - What's Next: 3D printing to revolutionise the solar energy industry | 3D Printer News & 3D Printing News | Future of 3D printing in 5-10 years | Scoop.it
I believe this new printing medium could be a game-changer as 3D solar cells, despite advances in energy storage, can capture more sunlight than conventional PV models.
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article expalins that the future of 3D printing can be used to create solar panals. In creating these printouts this will make it much cheaper for the setup fees of solar energy, lower the cost of electricity prices, and save useful resources that are currently used to make solar panels.

How Will 3D Printing Impact The Manufacturing Industry? | Future of 3D printing in 5-10 years | Scoop.it
The 3D printing industry is expected to change the landscape of the manufacturing industry over the next decade. The technology has been around since 1980s; however, more recently, it has come into the spotlight.
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article explains of possible development through 3d printing. As it is shown, this is one persons opinion and has no peer reviews attached to it. Although he raises some good points in what he says more evidence will need to be obtained to back these statements up.

3D Printing Has a Bright Future With Dark Problems

3D Printing Has a Bright Future With Dark Problems | Future of 3D printing in 5-10 years | Scoop.it
DIY gunsmithing is just one potential issue 3D printer companies must decide how to handle. But there are many more risks on the horizon.
Josh Hurn's insight:

This articles focuses on the problems for future 3D printing. It states an old lesson saying that with "New technology brings along new problems and issues. It does however also say that the future of 3D printing is still bright, however, it finishes the article by practically saying that there are going to be many problems with 3D printing and entrepreneurs in the space will have to deal with them.

3D printing & the future of retail

Marc Andreessen recently made some bold statements about the future of the retail business: “Retail chains are a fundamentally implausible economic structure if there’s a viable alternative,” he says.
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article conveys a different view to 3D printing. It explained that with 3D printing the future of retail will crash dramatically by losing 20-30% in revenues. This point is stated because the future of 3D printing will be able to print out nearly anything. This will be one of the problems of future 3D printing.

ExplainingTheFuture.com : 3D Printing

ExplainingTheFuture.com : 3D Printing | Future of 3D printing in 5-10 years | Scoop.it
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article explains what 3D printing is by showing its current technology's and how it is used for commercial services and personal services. Its explains in depth the current 3D printing applications before moving onto what the future will hold for 3D printing. One of the main points it brings across for future development is if something in a household or business is broken, instead of throwing it away you are able to printout the parts needed to fix the broken item. This really is an acheivable goal for the next 5-10 years.

Josh Hurn's insight:

This article thoroughly shows a perfect example of what 3D printing will be able to acheive in the next 5-10 years. As it is said in this article a company called 'Made In Space' has already successfully printed 3D tools in zero gravity. These techniques used in the next 5 - 10 years will be able to create remarkable things.

Nathan Judson's curator insight, March 18, 2013 3:31 AM

Another great theory that could potentially happen in the next 5 to 10 years in 3D printing, having robots print large structures in space rather then on earth saving the need to find and build lift of space crafts large enough to carry it off earth.

The future of 3D printing
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article is based on questions asked to a U.Va. professor of mechanical and aerospace. He states in one of his answers that in this point in time 3D printing is only best used for prototyping. He then moves onto say that an acheivable goal in the next 10 years would be to be able to purchase online forms that are able to be printed at home. His exact statement to future 3D printing is "It might be possible eventually to print your own shoes after scanning your feet, or maybe printing your clothes". This really would be a huge step for 3D printing.

A Pessimistic Look at the Future of 3D Printing, Not According to the CEO of GE - Shapeways Blog on 3D Printing News & Innovation | Future of 3D printing in 5-10 years | Scoop.it
Sam Jacob has written an opinion piece on Dezeen that has a somewhat pessimistic take on the future of design and 3D printing.
Josh Hurn's insight:

This article is an opinion of one person. Therefore more evidence will need to be obtained on this topic to prove his statements. Overall he states that 3D printing has already started to free us from mass produced forms of consumerism, and that even in these early stages of 3D printing it is available to anyone to use. He does not touch to much on the future of 3D printing but he does show what 3D printing is today and leaves it up to the reader to think of where they think 3D printing will go from now.

Josh Hurn's insight:

Reading through the questions and answers from the interview with unellenu. It explains in great detail through text, images and videos what 3D printing is, how it is used, the limitations of it and what unellenu thinks the future of 3D printing holds. She answers this very briefly by saying "3D printing will see an increasing number of home users, and an explosion of its prevalence in many industries."
