The five pillars of transmedia

The five pillars of transmedia | Film Futures | Scoop.it

Zan Chandler: As I do my own research around the evolving role of audiences in a filmmaking context, I continually draw inspiration and insights from the transmedia space. While it's tempting to think that traditional media production, such as film and TV is evolving toward transmedia, it is likely that transmedia is one possible future out of several.

A recent post by Simon Staffans about the five pillars of transmedia: the creative, the technology/production, financing, marketing and audience.

None of this is new, of course. What is significant for me is that marketing and audience are considered fundamental aspects of transmedia production. I suspect that audience doesn't factor so highly, or in quite the same way for the cinema crowd. At least this is how I have perceived it over the course of my expert interviews and desk research.

Here are a few snippets from the blogpost that stand out for me:

"What marketing people need to ponder and understand is that transmedia most often has a participatory nature. It’s not marketing in the sense of ”show them this can of soda enough times and they will buy it!”, it’s ”tell the story of the content, give them a reason to tell it – or their own connected stories – onwards and the tools to do it”. There’s quite a big difference that needs to be understood and adhered to, in order for marketing to work for a transmedia project."

"The audience is the foundation that all these pillars need to be grounded on, else we’ll just have a heap of rabble in the end."

The Story of a Transmedia Revolution (Part 2)

The Story of a Transmedia Revolution (Part 2) | Film Futures | Scoop.it

While part one deals mostly with books and discusses iPad Author, it's part two that struck a chord for me. Peter Usagi's lament that storytelling is becoming a lost art is particularly intriguing to me. Over the years, we have become gored on stories created by others (media industries) that we do not regularly practice our own storytelling muscles. Peter believes that tools available today make it possible for everyone to become a storyteller, and a transmedia one, at that. This appeals to my sense that everyone can be a creator but I wonder how many will make the time and effort to do so.

For my creator friends, I ask "how will you invite your audiences to tell stories with you and for each other?"
