INFOGRAPHIC: Cloud Security Adoption

INFOGRAPHIC: Cloud Security Adoption | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it

Security is a real issue even though it is true that cloud computing is just as safe as traditional systems when it comes to apparent vulnerabilities and security holes. This is because of the nature of cloud computing, the public cloud, there are a lot more people with proximity access to the data. What I mean is that compared to an in-house system where there is virtually no connection to the outside internet, the whole world will now be potentially be able to just walk up to your door, so to speak, in public cloud systems.

Apple has acquired Workflow, a powerful automation tool for iPad and iPhone | #Acquisitions

Apple has acquired Workflow, a powerful automation tool for iPad and iPhone | #Acquisitions | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it
Apple has finalized a deal to acquire Workflow today — a tool that lets you hook together apps and functions within apps in strings of commands to automate tasks. We’ve been tracking this one for a while but were able to confirm just now that the ink on the deal is drying as we speak.

I haven’t been able to get financial details for the deal, but if I come up with them I’ll update.

The app was made by a small team that includes Ari Weinstein, a former iPhone jailbreaker. I’ve been following his efforts since the iPod Linux days and covered his very useful DeskConnect app a few years back.

Workflow has been around for a couple of years and we’ve covered it and its updates. It shares some similarity with the service IFTTT, in that it allows people to group together a bunch of actions that can allow them to perform complicated tasks with one tap. It had built up a sizeable number of users and downloads over the past few years.

Workflow the app is being acquired, along with the team of Weinstein, Conrad Kramer and Nick Frey. In a somewhat uncommon move for Apple, the app will continue to be made available on the App Store and will be made free later today.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

With such growth will come one of 2 things: explosion of new solutions and a huge market size OR a complete failure. I vote for complete failure as the solutions will not live up to the hype (too expensive, too immersive / lack of environment understanding, etc.). VR will not be a mass market solution this time around (AR has more chances to be it, but it is much more difficult to achieve than VR IMHO).

But the huge amount of investment will yield amazing new devices and opportunities for businesses that will be able to put forward specialized VR solutions in healthcare and manufacturing.

prgnewshawaii's curator insight, March 15, 5:51 PM

Interesting analysis by reporter Farid Mheir.  I tend to agree that VR, with its added expenses for equipment, will not be as successful as AR.  VR could be a risky investment.

Amazon Echo and the Internet of Things (IoT) that spy on you

Amazon Echo and the Internet of Things (IoT) that spy on you | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it

Amazon’s Echo is a robot that sits in your house and listens. The virtual personal assistant can be summoned into action by saying its name, Alexa, and will then act on commands, like ordering a dollhouse and cookies when asked to do so by a too-clever kindergartener. And because it works by listening, Alexa is an always-on surveillance device, quietly storing snippets of information. Which has placed a particular Echo unit in an uncomfortable role: possible witness to a murder.

On Nov. 22, 2015, Victor Collins at the home of James Bates in Bentonville, Arkansas. The night before, Bates invited friends, including Collins, over to watch the football game, and after Bates reported Collins death, police collected some evidence of struggle from the scene. Still, there is more potential evidence police would like to use in the case: audio recorded by the Echo, which could illuminate more about what transpired that night.

That evidence is held by Amazon, as data on Amazon servers, and to gain access to it, police filed a search warrant in December 2015. For over a year, Amazon responded in part to the requests: providing police with the subscriber information for the account, and noted that police tried to access the suspect’s cellphone, as a way to access his Echo account, but were unable to do so.

On Feb. 17, 2017, Amazon filed a motion to quash the warrant for the recordings from the Echo, arguing that such a search violates first amendment and privacy rights. So does Alexa, the program that speaks through Echo on behalf of Amazon, actually have privacy rights?

“What Amazon’s doing is drawing on a line of cases that say there is a connection between freedom of expression, which is protected by the First Amendment, and privacy. That connection is that when you have government surveillance—especially of intellectual activity, let’s say listening to music or reading books or buying books or even using the search engine,” says Margot Kaminski, a professor at Ohio State University’s Moritz College of law, who specializes in law and technology, “that surveillance implicates intellectual freedom in a way that’s important for free expression.”

SMART SEXISM : condom lets users know how good they are in bed

SMART SEXISM : condom lets users know how good they are in bed | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it
Penis girth, thrust counts and sexual health are all measured by the i.Con smart condom ring, as wearable technology moves into the bedroom.

Manufactured by British Condoms, i.Con is a fitness tracker for the penis. It provides the wearer with performance statistics while also promising to detect signs of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Among the variables the smart condom ring can track are calories burnt, duration of intercourse, average number of thrusts and girth measurements.

British Condoms says the ring, which is used in addition to (rather than instead of) a regular condom, is the final stages of testing and will be released later in 2017.

"It's truly a revolutionary day," said the project's lead engineer Adam Leverson. "Not only have we innovated the world's first smart condom ring that'll measure pretty much every aspect of performance in the bedroom, but now I'm pleased to confirm that it will also have built-in indicators to alert the users to any potential STIs present."
