10 Principles for Leading the Next Industrial Revolution

10 Principles for Leading the Next Industrial Revolution | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it

Tools and techniques to ensure your company will stand out in the new age of digitization.

Establishing Your Strategy

1. Rethink your business model. The business world has become accustomed to disruption.

2. Build your strategy around platforms. What the value chain was to the old industrial system, the platform is to the new. A platform is a combination of interoperable standards and systems.

3. Design for customers. Because the next industrial revolution is driven by large-scale digital technology, it’s easy to overlook the way it could affect human relationships. The new infrastructure is a web of connections among people: Producers and consumers ...

4. Raise your technological acumen. No matter what industry you’re in, you live in a programmable world, and software will be key to your competitiveness.

5. Innovate rapidly and openly. Innovation and leadership go hand in hand in the next industrial revolution. Many companies will seek disruptive innovation, but a steady stream of incremental innovations can be more profitable.

6. Learn more from your data. The exponential increase in real-time data — gathered from customers, equipment, and work processes — is giving companies new insights.

7. Adopt innovative financing models. New large-scale technologies inevitably put pressure on the old ways of raising money for them.

8. Focus on purpose, not products. As a leader in the Industrial Internet, you will probably develop a wide range of products and services during any given five-year period, potentially in several sectors.

9. Be trustworthy with data. You already collect a vast amount of data. As the IoT spreads to wearables, consumables, cars, and every conceivable part of the home, what you know about people will increase exponentially.

10. Put humanity before machines. You might think the principle of putting people before machines is so obvious that it goes without saying.

The next industrial revolution is coming to represent this great wave of technological change. The leaders of this revolution are companies making advances in fields such as robotics, machine learning, digital fabrication (including 3D printing), the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics and blockchain (a system of decentralized, automated transaction verification). Because these technologies all reinforce the others’ impact, they are leading to a new level of proficiency, and new types of opportunities and challenges for business and for society at large. Put humanity before machines. You might think the principle of putting people before machines is so obvious that it goes without saying

How Marketers Can Prepare For AI-powered Marketing - Forbes

How Marketers Can Prepare For AI-powered Marketing - Forbes | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it
  • AI-powered marketing tech is initially an efficiency play. AI offers many benefits in the long term, but initially it will improve firms’ capacity to handle resource intensive tasks such as data integration, segment and rule creation, and experiment design.
  • AI-powered marketing tech is turnkey. To encourage adoption and ensure seamless execution, AI must be productized within marketing technology systems rather than forcing marketers to develop or integrate AI into existing solutions on their own.
  • AI-powered marketing tech adoption starts with basic applications. AI’s initial foray into marketing focuses on enhancing mainstay use cases such as buying ads, personalization, surfacing insights, and optimizing message send times.
  • AI-powered marketing tech doesn’t have to be a black box. AI is incredibly complex, but marketers can still demystify the technology and define their requirements if they ask the right questions.

A Strategist’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence

A Strategist’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it
As you contemplate the introduction of artificial intelligence, articulate what mix of the three approaches works best for you.

• Are you primarily interested in upgrading your existing processes, reducing costs, and improving productivity? If so, then start with assisted intelligence, probably with a small group of services from a cloud-based provider.

• Do you seek to build your business around something new — responsive and self-driven products, or services and experiences that incorporate AI? Then pursue an augmented intelligence approach, probably with more complex AI applications resident on the cloud.

• Are you developing a genuinely new technology? Most companies will be better off primarily using someone else’s AI platforms, but if you can justify building your own, you may become one of the leaders in your market.

The transition among these forms of AI is not clean-cut; they sit on a continuum. In developing their own AI strategy, many companies begin somewhere between assisted and augmented, while expecting to move toward autonomous eventually

How to add JBOC (Just a Bunch of Cloud) to your enterprise | Future of Cloud Computing, IoT and Software Market | Scoop.it
Storage grows more complex every day, but the cloud is poised to simplify many storage challenges and the costs of less used data. It gives enterprises the opportunity to focus now on data management rather than storage management, and smart software can make it simple to transition towards a much more intelligent data center that leverages data to meet business needs by optimizing the use of all available storage resources, from the enterprise and into the cloud.

Mike Frane, VP of product management at Windstream, told dozens of tech-industry watchers at Boston's recent MassIntelligence Conference that "the retail industry is going to be least likely to adopt AI."

But Frane sandwiched this remark between compelling monologues on the bandwidth woes of traditional brick-and-mortar businesses.

"What we're seeing in the enterprise world is that the bandwidth requirements are doubling every 18 months," Frane said in his breakout session.  The conundrum is further exacerbated, reported Frane, by trends and demands of the Internet of Things – a key enabling technology of AI systems – and the "tremendous amount of information" that the IoT will gather and generate....
